Who is English?

I see reform have started a debate about the meaning of being English which has stirred a few feathers. To my mind anyone who is born in the country is English..

I would say moving to a country does not necessarily make you a national of a country e.g. if I moved the South of Spain as a retired I don't know if could reasonably call my self Spanish but children of English people definitely could.

One thing that is worth debate is how you frame heritage and is this important? For instance would 2nd.generation immigrants from India would want to be referred as English but if Indian oriigin? Is there an actual desire for people of foreign heritage to maintain a part of their identity connected to their country of family origin for cultural reason?

Seems to me you’re being deliberately ignorant. FWIW I would never fly a flag personally I have zero desire but if you genuinely can’t understand what I mean, then you have either been living under a rock or you know fine well but you’re pretending it’s just me, when we all know that’s BS!

So basically no one has stopped you flying a flag, you just have no desire to?

So why are you angry at minorities?

Ik but why single out the English as having “traditions”.

Do you think England is the only country without any?

Read the quotes!

Omg. I was replying to a post which states that English people can't follow their traditions any more. I asked which ones. That was it.

It could be Easter eggs eg. I don't know, which is why I asked.

But unlike the pp who said the English alone don’t have any not a culture, you do think we do?

Ok that’s good.

nomas · 11/10/2026 10:19

EasternStandard · 11/10/2026 09:51

Would you say “traditions” with air quotes for say China, Brazil or France?

Or just traditions, if you’d ask at all. Or is it just wrt English?

She’s quoting that poster. People use quotation marks when quoting a poster.

Air quotes usually follows rl use but ok.

It reminds me of the Labour politician who said the stuff about the countryside and black labs.

Yes I do think you do but asked which ones aren't allowed now. It could be a simple one. An example would be, for Scots, if weren't allowed to have steak pie at New Year any more. There would be riots 😆

Thank you! Not "air" quotes . Just run of the mill every day quotes.

Ahh the old use of language to try and get your point across. Let’s play then, why do you hate the English?

Ok a good example might be the recent Labour MP statement that warm ale, black labs, the pub and what she deemed to be an old fashioned view of the countryside didn’t exist.

There’s been plenty of similar backlash.

Ok. I don't really keep up with Westminster. Too interested in Holyrood.

Pp said they “couldn’t” fly a flag. Like they’ll be arrested if they do. The far right are constantly making out that they’ll be arrested for flying flags. It’s bollocks. Anyone can fly a flag on their property.

If I painted a mural of Jedward on my gable end, everyone would think I was a twat, but there’s no law against it. I wouldn’t go on twitter saying “You’re not even ALLOWED to paint a picture of Jedward on your house in the UK!”

If you want to get angry with anyone, get angry with the National Front and all the other fascist organisations that co-opted the flag, not the people who are loathe to be associated with them.

Like any far right anywhere they are using the local flag (often with additional indivifual group flags). But everyone here did wet blanket, folded with "oh well, we can't use our flag because these people do".
If this thinking was common, most people anywhere would be ashamed of their flag.
In Scotland they waved the saltire.
They also use Union Jack. Should that be considered undesirable flag because of this as well?
It's sad and weird really imho

Ok there’s an English tradition though. And one that a Labour politician walked in to rather idiotically.

It's time to move on and use that space wisely for building new homes and services or for more green spaces and playgrounds. I agree some historic buildings should remain (not new religious buildings though).

So, what is your understanding of religious people..?? Because they have practised openly for a long time now and I am none the wiser about why we allow scared, and/or self-indulgent, and conditioned people to continue doing so..! The benefits of eliminating it from public life outweigh any negatives. And we wouldn't be the first country to do so.

We can have a tolerant society but there is a line as we know - we don't allow crime, we don't allow (public) hate and we shouldn't allow fantasies to take up public space - think how much intolerance these fantasies cause!

And religion wouldn't have to be banned entirely. Just not recognised or normalised in public.

So like France which is a secular society.

On but never use it. Only got an account for my work. On Twitter but not been on for months and mainly follow Scottish politics.

It’s mostly just people posting their lovely black or other colour labs in pubs or outside, plus ridiculing Labour over it.

Look it up. She is the MP for Suffolk Coastal. Jenny Riddell Carpenter. Probably easier than getting MN to describe the incident to you. Anyway when you see what she said you will understand the reaction.

I am English! And I love my country, despite its faults.

How bizarre to assume I’m not.
