Who is English?

I see reform have started a debate about the meaning of being English which has stirred a few feathers. To my mind anyone who is born in the country is English..

I would say moving to a country does not necessarily make you a national of a country e.g. if I moved the South of Spain as a retired I don't know if could reasonably call my self Spanish but children of English people definitely could.

One thing that is worth debate is how you frame heritage and is this important? For instance would 2nd.generation immigrants from India would want to be referred as English but if Indian oriigin? Is there an actual desire for people of foreign heritage to maintain a part of their identity connected to their country of family origin for cultural reason?

Why can’t you say you’re proud to be English? Why are you not allowed to fly your country’s flag? Who is stopping you? Of course you can fly the flag from your own property. There’s no law against it. But obviously you can’t fly any flag from property that isn’t yours.

Be real. I can fly flag from country I was born it and get kudos, if i put English one, I end up on MN subject "neighbour is far right, what do we do".
It's so incredibly stupid tbh

If you fly an English flag you are automatically a "flag shagger" apparently. In other countries people have flag poles in their gardens where they can fly the nations flag very happily. Those are much more socially free countries than here sadly. The left's disapproval doesn't not dominate there.

So a group of nations that are all near each other and have a shared history linguistically, historically and culturally?

France was a colonial empire that included Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Martinique, New Caledonia and many more.

So not just neighbouring nations.

Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion are still part of the French Republic.

Who told you you can’t fly your flag? Is that it? A flag. No other traditions?

Seems to me you’re being deliberately ignorant. FWIW I would never fly a flag personally I have zero desire but if you genuinely can’t understand what I mean, then you have either been living under a rock or you know fine well but you’re pretending it’s just me, when we all know that’s BS!

I’m an atheist, personally I have no time for religion of any description but I do believe if we want a tolerant society and I do then we need to understand other people beliefs/fantasies. It’s always good to understand why people think the way they do. That doesn’t mean I agree with it but it helps us to understand.
To remove churches i.e. the buildings in many cases would be an absolute outrage, not because they are places where God is worshiped but because of their sheer beauty, no one can go to say to Lincoln Cathedral and not be awe inspired by it beauty. Just the craftsmanship alone is incredibly. So many of our most important works of art were created because of religion you don’t for example have to believe in any God to be moved by the Pieta; a mother mourning the loss of her son. I as an atheist love Handel’s Messiah to he music is so beautiful.

It's time to move on and use that space wisely for building new homes and services or for more green spaces and playgrounds. I agree some historic buildings should remain (not new religious buildings though).

So, what is your understanding of religious people..?? Because they have practised openly for a long time now and I am none the wiser about why we allow scared, and/or self-indulgent, and conditioned people to continue doing so..! The benefits of eliminating it from public life outweigh any negatives. And we wouldn't be the first country to do so.

We can have a tolerant society but there is a line as we know - we don't allow crime, we don't allow (public) hate and we shouldn't allow fantasies to take up public space - think how much intolerance these fantasies cause!

And religion wouldn't have to be banned entirely. Just not recognised or normalised in public.

One of them yes, is that a problem?

No. However, it's not uniquely English.

WhoGives2Fucks · 11/10/2026 09:36

No one said it was uniquely English but it’s a tradition or was especially on a Friday wrapped up in newspaper. Not so much these days

Why is the “air quotes” and continual questions over English traditions in particular?

Do you think there aren’t any for England alone, or other countries don’t have any either?

WhoGives2Fucks · 11/10/2026 09:42

@Differentforgirls

i have no idea how I managed to post twice and get a gif video thing in my post. This site is so slow for me today and I pressed post 3/4 times and some how it added that daft video. I didn’t even know you could post videos!

I don't know either way. I'm not English.

Would you say “traditions” with air quotes for say China, Brazil or France?

Or just traditions, if you’d ask at all. Or is it just wrt English?

Pp said they “couldn’t” fly a flag. Like they’ll be arrested if they do. The far right are constantly making out that they’ll be arrested for flying flags. It’s bollocks. Anyone can fly a flag on their property.

If I painted a mural of Jedward on my gable end, everyone would think I was a twat, but there’s no law against it. I wouldn’t go on twitter saying “You’re not even ALLOWED to paint a picture of Jedward on your house in the UK!”

If you want to get angry with anyone, get angry with the National Front and all the other fascist organisations that co-opted the flag, not the people who are loathe to be associated with them.

Ik but why single out the English as having “traditions”.

Do you think England is the only country without any?

MrsPapillon · 11/10/2026 10:13

I’d also like to make the point that I believe if any one country has been responsible for the dilution of British traditions, it’s the United States, not any Asian nation.

We are chest-deep in American culture in the UK, but the racists don’t seem to mind it at all. It’s only curry and headscarves they object to.

Omg. I was replying to a post which states that English people can't follow their traditions any more. I asked which ones. That was it.

It could be Easter eggs eg. I don't know, which is why I asked.
