I followed this story because it was so tragic, but wasn't expecting that 😪

The three sisters, seen as teenagers, and their father sit together at a restaurant table, from left to right, Jane Adetoro, Joseph, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters.

Three sisters who died in sea off Brighton took own lives, inquest finds

The bodies of Jane Adetoro, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters were pulled from the water on 13 May.

Strange and very sad case

I know of two siblings who committed suicide together, so didn't doubt the verdict.

Hopefully not for the same reasons though.

Their mother had died when they were still young, and their monstrous father 'replaced' his wife by visiting his little daughters beds at night.

They wrote in the letter that they just couldn't live with it anymore, even after years, and just wanted to be safe with mum.

PrettyLittleRose · 08/10/2026 15:22

Oh wow, that's awful isn't it? How sad. 😞

Wow that's horrific! 😢

My initial assumption had been one getting into difficulties and two tragic accidents trying to save her, but i didn't know about any of the prep work then.

Suicide pacts aren't unknown. Pretty rare, but the mechanics of social contagion, the way people can encourage each other to take that step, is fairly well known. As is the risk factor of having a parent who took their own life. I don't find it hugely surprising. Certainly less surprising than the idea of it being murder - which seemed highly unlikely.

Such a tragic waste.

this is my understanding too, they only bring verdicts of suicide if they are certain. So sorry to read of what happened to your brother and his friend

I've sat in a lot of inquests and this is true. Coroners will only record a verdict of suicide if there is unequivocal evidence to support that, otherwise they go with a different verdict.

Cantbelieveit888 · 08/10/2026 15:43

Reminds me of story/film the virgin suicides, where the sisters all took their lives. So very sad.
I remember almost drowning by accident in a family members swimming pool before my relative saved me and it was not pleasant at all, quite painful, and that all happened in a very short space of time.
Believer or non believer I hope they get to reunite together with their mum.

rubixsphere · 08/10/2026 15:44

This story is so tragic and reminds me of that 1999 movie The Virgin Suicides with Kirsten Dunst.

My cousin died when he was 19, from SADS, and his parents were talking about a suicide pact, like they were discussing their weekend plans.
They said that they had to go and look after him, like it was the most logical, and natural thing in the world.
Thankfully, their daughters were able to pull them out of it.

I only have one child, and could well imagine that being the case for me (I don't think it would be for my husband).

I really enjoy living, but I don't have any sort of fear of death because as far as I'm concerned it's just null. I wouldn't be going to be with him, I just wouldn't have to be without him any more.

Hopefully it will never come to that, as I can see those being my thoughts. When he was very little if he was sleeping well in the night (you know, that kind of sleep that they do suddenly and you wonder if they've had a cot death, because you're used to being woken up...), I used to say to myself, "look, you can torture yourself wondering if he's unwell, you can go wake him up by checking, or you can go to sleep - either he's fine, or if he's not, you don't have to stay alive of you don't want to". It got me back to sleep.

It's a tragedy that these women didn't have any reason to live, but I hope that in some way they are least felt comfort from each other and hope of reunion.

There will have been more detail in court on their background for the coroner to make this statement as reported in the BBC article.

Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, had been living "very secluded lives" following the death of their mother, who drowned in 2010, senior coroner Penelope Schofield said.

The same thing stood out for me, and while of course this is an awful tragedy there'll doubtless be a lot we'll never know

What, you know more than professionals on the case?

Quite. It’s Nicola Bulley all over again.

i thought it was a well known and accepted thing that it can run in families?

“It’s the drama, Mick..I love it!” That’s what the death vultures are thinking.

Ninetwenty · 08/10/2026 13:17

I'm sure they did, but in my mind, I'd expect at least one to say come on don't be so daft, mum wouldn't want this. 😪

Because you are not suffering from untreated PTSD, for example
You didn't come from a less secure family, for example (as suggested by family background reports at the time)
Because you don't have a MH condition that drives you to be totally reclusive - so reclusive that one didn't even have a GP - and display unusual behaviours (according to a relative)

OffTheMap · 08/10/2026 16:13

The media will only be reporting the major facts from the Coroners Report - not everything that transpired at the inquest.

Awfuldaughter · 08/10/2026 16:14

@Ninetwenty I agree with you. What doesn’t sit right with me is that I wonder if all three felt exactly the same…or did one perhaps have more influence? I just can’t quite believe that all three women had exactly the same experience and then came unanimously to the same conclusion. I’m prepared to get shouted down, but has cult vibes.

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 08/10/2026 16:15

People really need to stop publicly speculating online about other people's family tragedies.

The coroner is better placed to determine what happened than anyone here.

Just let the poor women rest in peace rather than ghoulishly picking their deaths apart.

It's been reported online though, so it's human nature for people to comment and speculate - online.....

Boomer55 · 08/10/2026 16:18

Goodness. They must have been unhappy. How sad.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 08/10/2026 16:22

This is what I assumed as well. I work with vulnerable young people and being a young carer and having attachment issues is a huge burden to carry.

ProudCat · 08/10/2026 16:32

Yeah, there's something very strange about this. Sisters living in isolation. One not even registered at a doctor. All 3 choose the same method their mother did.

Stop it. This horrible speculation on other people's lives is just ghoulish and vicious. You know nothing about what went on.

Wildgoat · 08/10/2026 16:51

I’m genuinly surprised any one is surprised at this, it feels it was very obvious, they went to where the mother used to live and then travelled several hours ri where she died, also by suicide, the odds of them doing that journey and it being a coincidence they died in the same spot, must be low to non existent

rhey also have rhem on cctv heading there and fhey couldn’t swim, there is clearly a back story as they changed their names from their fathers to their mothers,

whatever that story is, it’s their story, and speculating isn’t helpful. Ifs just a very sad situation,
