I followed this story because it was so tragic, but wasn't expecting that 😪

The three sisters, seen as teenagers, and their father sit together at a restaurant table, from left to right, Jane Adetoro, Joseph, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters.

Three sisters who died in sea off Brighton took own lives, inquest finds

The bodies of Jane Adetoro, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters were pulled from the water on 13 May.

Just ignore. @CurlewKate is another one who seems to be here just to lash out at people for some reason. It’s not like they contribute with much themselves apart from swearing at people. People like that can sadly really ruin your day.

At least I don’t think it’s OK to assume that anyone with a Caribbean background is likely to be influenced by Voodoo or black magic. Or think it’s OK to speculate about the tragic deaths of 3 women suffering from mental illness.

No, don't ignore @CurlewKate, because she's absolutely correct.

I'm putting my conspiracy hat on and based on their cultural background there may have been some sort of religious/Vodoo beliefs behind the whole thing? Some sort of magical thinking that made them want to join their mothers holly spirit in the water? Apparently they lead very secluded lives and were not really integrated in the community which makes me think they had a different belief system. Voodoo practitioners believe immersing in seas or rivers is a form of purification.

Agree. This does seem plausible.

Agree. This does seem plausible.

No, this is a racial assumption that detracts from this tragedy. Try thinking away from usual tropes.

They were Christian.
Their mother was a Christian

Look.
@Crowsinarow @BillieWiper and everyone saying ‘this doesn’t sit right with me’ ‘it’s just a guess’ etc without having read or absorbed all the info given, you have been picked up on it because comments like that and speculation do fuel conspiracy theories.
Which just spreads misinformation and is incredibly disrespectful to the victims and likely painful to friends and family.

And as for voodoo…well there is no mention of that in the coroners report (as reported by mainstream media) . Scandalous speculation.

Read the facts as reported by the Senior Coroner and try and understand that just because YOU don’t understand how grief, mental illness etc might cut to the very depths of their feelings doesn’t mean there is some other explanation

Let’s all agree: RIP Jane, Christina and Rebecca.

Oh, that's awful. 😢 Were they from Aberdeen, or did they travel to another town to do it? Just trying to work out why the three sisters would have gone to Brighton. If I was in that state, I think I'd go for the path of least resistance and go in a quiet part of the Thames.

They lived there but were originally Eastern European. They texted their landlord to say they wouldn’t be returning, left their flat and all their belongings, and were eventually found three weeks or so later in the river after a large search operation. It was determined it was a double suicide.

The family have said they don’t believe it but no other feasible option has been put forward really. They were seen on CCTV together heading in the direction of the river and then weren’t seen again.

They were devoted Catholics. This makes sense, as they had Caribbean roots and much of the Caribbean is Catholic. That was brought about by missionaries, I suppose, who wanted to replace voodoo with Christianity. Anyway, the sisters weren't into voodoo. A neighbour said she used to hear one of them singing hymns through the shared wall, and other sources have said the family were observant Catholics, too.

They had such lovely names, taken together, didn't they? Jane, Christina, and Rebecca. They sound like gentlewomen from another era.

Nofeckingway · 09/10/2026 23:27

They can't have been that Catholic as suicide was not really acceptable for many years .

It doesn't mean they weren’t observant Catholics, just that they were suffering from MH issues, probably connected to their mother’s death and these proved too much to cope with in the end.

Yeah because that's how it works- religion can overcome severe mental health issues. 🙄Stupid comment.

Agree. Awful speculation. More likely inherited disposition to low mental health and unresolved trauma from their mums mental illness and subsequent death.
An absolutely tragic story.
race does play a part in the treatment of people of colour and mental health, particularly women, so it is relevant to the wider picture, just not in the tomfoolery suggested here

Agreed.

My friend who was a strong evangelical/non-denominational Christian died by suicide in 2016. I don’t know what was going through his mind, but I assume he was in poor mental health due to long term unemployment and family and visa issues.

Yeah we don’t know so it’s unhelpful to have those kind of speculations about voodoo, when that’s not what their family have said or any of the evidence suggests. It can be seen as offensive if people are basing it purely on the fact of their heritage.

I certainly didn’t ’blame it on voodoo’. I simply agreed that it could be plausible. Who knows what happened to these dear ladies? May they rest in peace. That all we can hope for.

toiletpaperthief · Today 00:02

I don't get this weird "blaming it on vodoo=racism" vibe going on in this comments section. these women were from Caribbean descent, vodoo is popular, part of their culture and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. We may think vodoo is magical thinking but our own religion believes in a woman who got impregnated by a holly spirit so go figure. To suspect some vodoo beliefs might be involved in this family is not that far of a stretch. For these poor women to choose the same death as their mother one thinks that besides MH issues there must be some sort of strange beliefs going on, and it has nothing to do with racism.

RhubarbAndMustard · Today 07:44

Honestly the speculation on this thread. Where is it stated they are of Caribbean descent? If that’s merely from one cousin being based in the Caribbean then that’s an assumption not a fact. So many are taking snippets of info, turning them into fact and running away with themselves into ideas like voodoo. Just calm down. I know people want to talk about it but this is getting out of hand.

Not one of my friends of British friends of carribbean descent are into voodoo. About half are church attending Christians (many of whom don’t even celebrate Halloween) and the rest are Muslim, agnostic or nominally Christian and a couple are atheist.

I do however know plenty of white British women into things like Ouija boards and crystals and Wicca.

Blaming it on voodoo in this scenario is bizarre and unnecessary and offensive. Unless there was some evidence or testimony from a friend or family to suggest this.

Why are you so determined to link it to voodoo as if poor mental health doesn’t affect people badly and MH on its own can’t be enough? What planet are you on- some people suffering with MH even kill their own children.

And there’s plenty of mentally ill people who unfortunately choose a method of death that is similar to their parents. It’s not unusual for example for a boy whose dad died by hanging to grow up and do choose that same method of death.

I think they have both Caribbean and African (Nigerian) heritage.

Police searched Christina's laptop and found 227 references to water and 179 references to suicide.
The coroner said Christina had been experiencing anxiety and depression since the death of her mother

Afaik nothing was found in terms of searching voodoo type search terms so yes I agree - I wish people would calm down and drop this at least out of respect to the family (who are probably at least nominally Christians) it nothing else!!
