I followed this story because it was so tragic, but wasn't expecting that 😪

The three sisters, seen as teenagers, and their father sit together at a restaurant table, from left to right, Jane Adetoro, Joseph, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters.

The bodies of Jane Adetoro, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters were pulled from the water on 13 May.

Well of course it’s unusual - hence the degree of press coverage. But it’s not unbelievable I suppose if they were very close. Sounds like they led quite a sheltered life.

I'm not suggesting for a minute it's unbelievable, just very very sad.

No, I’m not happy, because three young women ended their own lives. The fact that you are suggesting that my response is because I’m having a bad day demonstrates that you still don’t get it.

Probably best to stop now and let it go!! It’s verging on bullying.

Yes, I understand that, but I would think it's unusal for the three together to reach pact on it. Isn't it more usual for people who don't have support?

If you live with and support someone who has severe anxiety and then have the complication of having faced the loss of a Mother (so reason to bond in grief) it's easy to all end up impacting each other's MH. There's a lot of brother and sister suicides, were they only seemed to have each other. It's why so.e forums are very dangerous, eating disorders, suicide etc and when you join a support group, you are often advised to keep boundaries, until you are both in a good place.

No I know you weren’t.

SleeptightEvangeline · 08/10/2026 13:06

Gosh, that is Awful. I can’t begin to imagine their mindset as they drove to the beach, all of them with the same intent. Those poor women 💔

Spaniels4Eva · 08/10/2026 13:07

It just makes you wonder what happened to make 4 women in one family that desperately unhappy that this was the only option... but it's horribly sad.

I already said I did read the article, but obviously too quickly and missed that bit. Otherwise I obviously wouldn’t have asked.
It is incredibly tragic, and I remember reading here when it happened from people that live in that area that there is a big drop and it’s almost impossible to get up. So it might have been a case where they tried to help each other. But now we know it wasn’t.

Gourdgirl · 08/10/2026 13:08

I understand it. I know my dc had same thoughts after suicide of sibling. And as a bereaved mother I get it completely.

HenriettaHippopotamus · 08/10/2026 13:12

I was surprised but I didn’t read much into the details at the time. You wonder how a plan like that forms, but maybe best not to think about. It’s just so sad.

I think we might work at the same place!

Xiaoxiong · 08/10/2026 13:14

I read an interview with the cousin of the young women who basically said her cousins never really recovered after the death of their mother and isolated themselves, living all together in a flat, showing unusual behaviours similar to their mother and going no contact with family members. Really really tragic.

But how do they know, it seems it is just a guess..?

In my (albeit limited) experience, the coroner will err on the side of caution where suicide is concerned. When DB died there was another friend involved. DB's death was accidental. DB's friend committed suicide the next day.
A few months later DB'S friend's inquest was held immediately after DB'S. His family was actually upset they (iirc) listed his as 'death by misadventure' because they said they couldn't be sure he meant to end his life and it wasn't just a cry for help because there was no note. He died one day after his best friend by an overdose!
I expect they're not giving the full details in this case, but they must be pretty sure to label these deaths as suicide. It voids any life insurance policies and obviously has a devastating effect on those left behind.

Really? I can't imagine a situation where all three thought that was the best/only thing to do 😪

Maybe they thought it would bring them nearer to their late mother who previously drowned

tokennamechange · 08/10/2026 13:15

I remember a thread on here at the time, there were people absolutely determined to think it was some sort of triple murder. Usually most likely explanation is the right one. It would be very unlikely that they would all accidentally fall in and be unable to get out/shout for help, particularly as they hadn't been drinking or anything, but even that was more likely than all three being randomly killed, presumably by at least two or three people working together, without anyone noticing.

The fact that the family couldn't find any photos of them as adults and used AI to mock one up of what they would look like based on childhood photos was also very odd. Of course I feel for their surviving family but it seems like there was probably a lot going on under the surface there for all 3 to feel suicide was the only way out.

I'm sure they did, but in my mind, I'd expect at least one to say come on don't be so daft, mum wouldn't want this. 😪

It doesn't automatically void life insurance, only if the policy is less than a year old.

Folie a trois I suppose. They all reinforced one another in the same way as sometimes it can work the other way where people all support one another in similar circumstances.

Those poor women.

Seemingly they had researched suicide, drownings and places to drown. They had also emptied the flat of personal effects and closed their bank accounts.

Yes and they couldn’t swim, so unlikely they’d have gone for a paddle, also their mother drowned

With respect this is what I hate about social media. read a headline and decide it's not right without reading what the inquest actually found out.

Its not super common no, but suicide pacts do happen.

By all accounts the three of them had completely isolated themselves and did not interact outside of their own family, they had no friends, no social life and no partners so I wouldnt say they had "support" by any means.

If the three of them had a dysfunctional childhood and mental health issues as a result of that, that may well have made them more depressed together not less.

this is my understanding too, they only bring verdicts of suicide if they are certain. So sorry to read of what happened to your brother and his friend

Thats not how depression works though is it?

You are viewing this through a lens that isnt currently suicidal or clinically depressed.

Oh ok. How sad.

It is incredibly sad. Three beautiful intelligent women that could just never recover form their mother suicide. 🌿
