I followed this story because it was so tragic, but wasn't expecting that 😪

The three sisters, seen as teenagers, and their father sit together at a restaurant table, from left to right, Jane Adetoro, Joseph, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters.

Three sisters who died in sea off Brighton took own lives, inquest finds

The bodies of Jane Adetoro, Christina Walters and Rebecca Walters were pulled from the water on 13 May.

It's really tragic. There have been other high profile cases where children brought about their deaths the same way their parent died. I'm thinking of Whitney Spears and Paula Yates.

Do you mean Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi?

LaurieFairyCake · 08/10/2026 12:42

That’s unbelievably sad 😔

drowning looks like a horrendous death to me.

Talloss · 08/10/2026 12:42

It's what I thought when I read about their mother dying by drowning. How awful for the dad.

Blimms · 08/10/2026 12:42

Crowsinarow · 08/10/2026 12:39

Well if you read I’ve already answered this. Why being so nasty?

If you missed “Police searched Christina's laptop and found 227 references to water and 179 references to suicide” you didn’t read it, you skimmed it.

Ninetwenty · 08/10/2026 12:33

Really? I can't imagine a situation where all three thought that was the best/only thing to do 😪

Well what else are you thinking?

Ninetwenty · 08/10/2026 12:46

Sidebeforeself · 08/10/2026 12:44

Well what else are you thinking?

I thought tragic accident. A family not used to being at the seaside getting into trouble on the steeply shelving beach. Maybe one trying to help the others.

Eta, I don't dispute the verdict, I just wasn't expecting it. I can see a family being devastated by their mother's death, but it's shocking (to me) that all three would see suicide as the answer.

Let’s hope all the people who think they know better give the police their evidence….

Staffygirl · 08/10/2026 12:49

CCTV picked up that just 48 hours before drowning, they had visited their mum's former home, they also then visited their mum's grave.
They then made the trip to Brighton, CCTV showed that despite none of them being able to swim they entered the water fully clothed.
So terribly sad.....

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/10/2026 12:50

The poor women and people who knew and loved them.

[Whitney Spears? Sorry, I know this is a really sad case, but that did make me smile.]

Ok you are right @Blimms. Happy now?
Hope the rest of your day is better.

But how do they know, it seems it is just a guess..?

No, it's a verdict after a coroner's inquest.

You cannot say it's odd, or something doesn't "sit right" unless you sat through the inquest and heard all the evidence. Had there been doubt, the coroner would have delivered an open verdict.

OsfameronTanamoril · 08/10/2026 12:52

Good god. How tragic. Untreated PTSD from their mum's death.

Edited

Fair enough. It is very sad.

Agatha1989 · 08/10/2026 12:52

What a tragedy. Their poor dad.

pumpkinpielatte · 08/10/2026 12:53

It's tragic and horrendously sad but this is exactly what I thought had happened.

The circumstances were too strange for it to be anything else.

They had been googling suicide/water hundreds of times prior to coming to Brighton and had apparently put their affairs in order.

They must have been so lost and felt so hopeless 😭

pumpkinpielatte · 08/10/2026 12:54

Sadly, you are more likely to take your own life if members of your family have done so, it actually increases your risk of doing it yourself, not lessens it.

Did you actually read the full article?

Specialneedsnightmare · 08/10/2026 12:56

I had a feeling this would be the finding after hearing more about their mothers death and their lives. Plus the idea of an accident was too weird considering it was a cold day and they were all found fully clothed in the sea.

It's really sad.

Yes, I understand that, but I would think it's unusal for the three together to reach pact on it. Isn't it more usual for people who don't have support?

Just realised am on 2 threads about tragic events now.
I am not normally a grief vulture. Just so much rage, sadness and loneliness in the world right now.

SevenYellowHammers · 08/10/2026 13:01

FookFookFook · 08/10/2026 12:23

hmm. That just doesn’t sit quite right.

They visited the site where their mum drowned 16 years ago, then walked into sea in adverse conditions. None of them could swim. It seems fairly obvious. God bless them and their family.

No, I’m not happy, because three young women ended their own lives. The fact that you are suggesting that my response is because I’m having a bad day demonstrates that you still don’t get it.

MummyJ36 · 08/10/2026 13:01

Oh my goodness this is incredibly tragic. What must they all have been going through to have collectively decided upon this.

Well of course it’s unusual - hence the degree of press coverage. But it’s not unbelievable I suppose if they were very close. Sounds like they led quite a sheltered life.

Octoberismyfave · 08/10/2026 13:02

That's so sad for them and her family left behind.
