Being forced out of family home?

My friend has been getting divorced for a while but it’s dragging on.

House in both names, 3 kids, 1 is an adult now though. Both living in the house.

My friend has a boyfriend for about 6 months or so but he’s never been to the martial home- he has his own house and my friend will visit him there.

Her husband has a girlfriend too. Recently the girlfriend has been at the marital home every day. My friend thinks she’s moved in but hasn’t been told officially. So my friend, her husband and his new girlfriend plus the 3 children are living in the house. My friend thinks this isn’t healthy for the kids but husband won’t listen, it’s become very hostile.

Now the husband and new girlfriend have started moving my friends personal belongings out of the martial home and into a shed in the garden which isn’t watertight. She comes home from work and puts things back but they keep doing it.

I feel like this is abusive and she is being forced out. She was told to stay until the finances and divorce are settled.

She doesn’t have any family to move to nearby, and she wouldn’t move in with her boyfriend this soon especially with children.

How can I help her?

Legally he cannot move someone else in without her consent.

Just speak to the lawyer.

Waytoohothot · 05/10/2026 17:32

Just put the dam house back on the market for a much lower price and get it sold, and tell your friend lock on door and dont move out just sell at a much lower price

She is aware she can’t force the girlfriend to leave or chuck her out.

She 'legally' could but it would have to go to civil court, police likely won't get involved but a lawyer could make clear boundaries.

One owner of a shared house can not invite a 3rd party to stay without the joint owners consent.

Dweetfidilove · 05/10/2026 17:37

What kind of disgusting human being does this to their own children ☹️.

Is the OW homeless? I cannot imagine the circumstances under which I'd help a man force his wife amd children out of their home, amd especially in the manner.
I hope the fuckers spend a very long amd miserable time together .

Waytoohothot · 05/10/2026 17:38

Why is her boyfriend not getting involved is he a man or a mouse,

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 05/10/2026 17:42

How on earth can she ‘think’ that the girlfriend has moved in? Surely you know if someone is living in your house with you?

I wonder if the husband has told his gf that it's his house and he's just waiting it out until his XW leaves? It's the only way I can make sense of her moving in with him into a disputed property.

Your friend really does need a solicitor. It's the only way she's going to get what's due to her (and she can go after half his pension too, he might be trying to distract attention from that possibility).

Still disgusting behaviour. Until the property is sold it is still a marital asset and the only people who should be living there are your friend, her ex husband and kids, nobody else should be going in and out such as a partner, its terrible behaviour. I too would do claire/sarahs law on this person as anyone who could walk into a family home like this screams lunatic to me.

Well yea she’s there every night and has a lot of stuff there, comes and goes and she pleases, my friend asked husband if the gf was living there officially and he told her it’s none of her business.

In what reasonable way can he get involved though?

He’s not going to move in and cause more friction in the household for the kids, and potential arguments. From what I understand he is a doctor so is a professional man.

My friend said he has said she can stay there, but that doesn’t solve the problem of her being pushed out of the house.

God knows what the husband has told the gf about my friend for her to think this is all okay.

She isn’t homeless, as far as I know she has her own home locally. Not sure if it’s rented or owned. Maybe it was rented and she’s given it up?

I had this with my ex although he didn't have his gf over. My solicitor sent him a letter to state neither of us can invite someone over without the others agreement. She needs to prioritise a solicitor

You are joking right? The situation is awful but reporting someone for a made up sexual offence towards minors?

It’s more ‘manly’ to not be part of this circus which sounds like it’s hugely impacting on the dc.

Hes an abusive controlling horrible person and yes she sounds horrible too i would say shes after his money but the house will be sold and he will be renting so i doubt she will hang around, when its sorted he will start abusing her

Yes and no i if i was him i would be helping her to get the house sold

Ponderingwindow · 05/10/2026 18:10

There are two good things in this situation. First is that she isn’t just running to the boyfriend’s home. The second is that he is staying out of this mess. It’s refreshing to see someone keeping boundaries with divorce dating.

Sadly, she needs a solicitor. She has to force the sale of the house. In a perfect world, she and the children would live elsewhere until that happens, but she should get legal advice before making any moves.

ChangedName010 · 05/10/2026 18:10

What a pair of scumbags. I'm not suggesting violence but fucking hell how has your friend not been? This would sent me over the top with rage.

Definitely domestic abuse services for advice, they may suggest calling the police. GP to log how it's impacting her emotionally. A diary of every little thing that is happening with dates, times and any witnesses (also how it made her feel). She wants as much logged with professionals as possible because you can't put it passed these two to start making accusations against her being the abusive, unreasonable one.

16usernamesin16years · 05/10/2026 18:14

I don't see how they're even getting a divorce, if neither have solicitors involved then nothing is going to move forward?

Pallisers · 05/10/2026 18:18

He's moved her in to intimidate your friend out of the house. Clearly doesn't give a fuck about his children and he's met a kindred spirit in the girlfriend.

If I were the friend the next time they are out of the house I'd move all their stuff from the main bedroom to the boxroom and claim that for myself. Then I'd put a lock on it. I might also move some of the belongings to the shed.

Wadsworthy · 05/10/2026 18:18

Of course this is hostile & abusive.

She needs a rteally really vicious bulldog of a lawyer. Here on MN, they are known as "Shit hot lawyers" SHL.

redscreen · 05/10/2026 18:19

I'd be fucking with the GF. In particular I'd be wandering around in my undies etc, playing very loud music, turning over the tv channel whenever the GF sits down to watch tv, chucking "expired" food in the fridge, getting the kids to play wherever she is etc. But I wouldn't;t be in that situation in the first place since Id have served the legal papers to have the house sold and the proceeds split.

ChangedName010 · 05/10/2026 18:19

Would your friend be up for walking around the house naked when the kids aren't home? I think I'd do that. The other woman would soon get pissed off.

The DH in this case does appear to be rather delusional. However, to be quite frank, so do you.

To suggest to somebody that they make up false allegations against another person leading up to a divorce does nobody any good at all.

The truth will likely come out at some point and that will not help the OP at all.
