Crisis What Crisis? Is my friend over doing the stockpiling and am I too? Continuation thread (2)

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

I'm moving it over to chat from AIBU as it makes a bit more sense to be there at this point.

Previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5576816-aibu-to-think-my-friend-is-overdoing-emergency-stockpiling?page=1

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.

This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

We are however going through a period where various governments throughout Europe think there is an elevated risk of some kind of problem due to global instability and we should start to get our heads around the possibility of needing to be ready for anything.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

So this is for everything from tips and considerations about what might be a good idea to do /save minimise potential risks to just straight old political bollocks talk about how things are developing.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

This does actually explicitly say to write a personalised plan for your household which everyone knows and understands and to talk about the issues you may face to help you be able mobilise for any situation which might arise. Which is exactly what this thread is ultimately for.

Get prepared for emergencies - Prepare

How to get informed and put a plan in place to prepare if an emergency comes to you in your area.

@GentleSheep checklists are a very good point. It's something I did a while back. What3words location and hospital pack list for emergencies ( it's true - even though I'm very calm in emergencies, my brain scrambles when it comes to what needs bringing with). A short medical info list for each family member etc.
Also, fill in the medical info part on your phone - emergency services can access this without unlocking your phone, apparently.
I also have a household file - if I were to suddenly be rushed to hospital, my family can look and see when bin day is, important phone numbers, pet care info etc etc.
Smaller scale life events are well worth being prepared for, especially if you have a tendency not to be cool headed in a crisis.

Yes I must stock up on some cat food too..

Also going to add wet wipes after reading the post about no showers as that fills me with dread. The thought of not washing my hair everyday - yuck

Can anyone recommend cheapish tinned fruit, it seems to have gone up in price since I last bought it 😕

You can get waterless shampoo to wash your hair (Yes really)
Have a look on Amazon

Gas can only be shut off by the supplier going from house to house to shut it off before they turn it off at the mains. They then reinstate it by going back to every house to turn it on. Turning off domestic supply is problematic and so electricity will be rationed long before any gas supply disruption.

I do think it is sensible to backup any digital data including photos and emails from laptops, phones etc onto a physical hard drive that is then unplugged. Airgapping your data in the event of data centres being attacked, physically or in a cyber attack could save a lot of hassle and heartache.

FindingMeno · 11/10/2026 12:50

@OhYouBadBadKitten that's good to know.
I was thinking of having a gas leak. Or the boiler breaking down, something like that.

Would someone mind advising on a good solar power bank?Seems 65w is a good amount of power, but I admit it's confusing me which one to get! many thanks

Another Strike at Riyadh Airport. This time T4. More casualties. Number unknown.

Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia on social media. He added that both parties had agreed.

Alex Raufoglu
As Trump announced an energy ceasefire, two senior Ukrainian officials tell me Kyiv was hearing the statement for the first time -- and wondered “if Putin knows it”

Minutes later, a Russian UAV strike hit Kyiv’s Thermal Power Plant-6, knocking out 200 MW and disrupting water supplies across the city

Zelenskyy has told journalists that news of an energy ceasefire is not known to him or his government despite the recent announcement.

Then two hours after the announcement Russia launched a cruise missile attack on Kharkiv’s CHP-5 thermal power plant.

Zelenskyy has said there can be elections two months after a ceasefirehas been agreed and held.

Sure I mentioned it on the last thread. Homebargains do packs of deodorant wipes for I think it was 50p

Using this as. A good excuse to stock up on nice smelling candles too

RedToothBrush · 11/10/2026 18:22

Zelenskyy on twitter
I just spoke with @MarkJCarney, @alexstubb, and @SecGenNATO Mark Rutte. We discussed the energy ceasefire announced by President Trump. Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side. For our part, Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace. Thank you

Top trolling back here.

Hormuz Report
Iran is now threatening to directly strike the UAE and target undersea internet cables, data centers and AI facilities across the region if the U.S. and Israel resume the war, warning the next conflict could extend far beyond military targets, per Press TV.

Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaee warned: “If another war breaks out, many cables, data centers, artificial intelligence facilities, and other sites in the region will be destroyed and we will confront the enemy with a much broader and more extensive plan.” He added that U.S. assets in the UAE and around the Strait of Hormuz remain “extremely valuable” but are not yet on Iran’s target list, claiming regional cables, data centers and AI facilities are worth over $2 trillion.

The threat puts major U.S. tech firms including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Oracle and Nvidia in focus. AWS has reported damage to facilities in Bahrain and the UAE, while the IRGC has already designated 18 U.S. tech companies as “legitimate military targets” in the Middle East.

Add backing up your photos you have stored in a cloud to the Stockpiling To Do List, preferably getting your most special phones printed off in the process.

Please please forgive my stupid questions, I’ve just Googled and can’t figure out what’s going on.

This is the second attack, right? I watched our Newsround equivalent with the children earlier and saw it then (happened last night or this morning?)

So it’s since been attacked again?

(I slept really badly and am extremely hard of thinking today.)

So this is another Saudi airport. Riyadh's been attacked twice, now this one. Houtis are busy.

Thank you - honestly my mind isn’t working.
Obviously that’s secondary to what those impacted are going through.
Pfff things were already pretty bad; events of the last few days or so are clearly beyond my comprehension!

RedToothBrush · 11/10/2026 23:03

The Financial Times is reporting that the Trump administration has spent the weekend demanding European Countries to stop sending weapons to Ukraine. This was not a request.

American officials are now actively working to cut of Ukrainian's ability to fight.

Like Europe is going to do this, given it's part of their own defensive strategy.

Yippee. America is now allied with Russia. Surely NATO is dead in all but name at this point.

Actually the one today was the fourth attack at Riyadh.

Can you imagine keeping Heathrow open after three previous attacks including one the day before in which 12 people were killed and 300 injured?!

Mark Carney
This morning I spoke with Presidents Trump and Zelenskyy. In both conversations, we focused on the rapidly evolving situation around energy and the war in Ukraine.

The new energy ceasefire being brokered by President Trump between Russia and Ukraine has the potential to significantly de-escalate the war and protect thousands of civilians from harm and hardship. Canada calls on Russia to uphold this agreement as we keep working with our Allies to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine and Europe.

Business Insider Reporting:

Russia used 150,000 Twitter accounts for Brexit

There was 45,000 tweets with the majority encouraging people to vote Leave a few days before the 2016 vote

These accounts had previously focused on Russia's annexation of Crimea, before focusing on Brexit

Then Ukraine bombed Yandex oil refineries and poor old Trump threw his toys out the pram and declared unilaterally that Ukraine and Russia would stop bombing energy centres (without telling them) and that was bad for his election campaign America and Twitter owner Musk threw his toys out the pram and agreed with Trump because that just cost him a shit load in terms of the value of Twitter.

Oops.

Zelenskyy is properly trolling Trump today
We had a very detailed discussion with @vonderleyen on virtually all the current areas of our work with the European Union and the decisions needed to support Ukraine. I thanked Ursula for the recent €1.24 billion tranche for defense, which Ukraine has already received. I am grateful for the confirmation that another approximately €3 billion in military support will be allocated as early as next week. These funds will strengthen us.

Of course, I briefed the President on the brutal Russian strikes that continue unabated. Just before our conversation, the Russians struck a power plant in Kyiv with a “shahed” drone, and many districts experienced power outages. Later, there were strikes on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region. And all of this happened AFTER the President of the United States made his statement about an energy ceasefire.

Under these circumstances, reliable support from our partners means real protection for people's lives and a guarantee that the Russians will not be able to break Ukraine. We deeply appreciate all the tangible steps taken to support our defense and our people.

Ursula and I agreed that our teams will have detailed discussions on our next joint actions and the coordination of our steps. We are also preparing to open the negotiating clusters – so that all the remaining clusters are opened by the end of the year. Ukraine’s European path is also a path toward strengthening Europe itself. Thank you!

All I can think is the reality for Russia is so bad and the prospect of losing the Midterms is so bad, Trump and Putin made a deal. But it's not really working. And now we have two mental dictator in a rat trapped in the corner scenario where neither can back down on anything and ultimately it wouldn't surprise me if their response was ultimately to decide to take out everything because they didn't get their own way.

How the fuck did we get here?

Note Burnham picked TODAY when all the Yanex bots were offline to go public with the information that intelligence agencies had evidence the Brexit had Russian interference. And today there's lots of talk about what a potential re-entry to the EU would be like. Because today it clearly shows exactly what has been happening in a way that's really hard for large numbers of the public to deny.

Another Yandex data centre gone over night. It's being pointed out that this also blocks access to criminally acquired money held in crypto.

Overnight Trump clips

Wow the intelligence about that Australia and New Zealand.
