Crisis What Crisis? Is my friend over doing the stockpiling and am I too? Continuation thread (2)

RedToothBrush · 03/10/2026 22:25

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

I'm moving it over to chat from AIBU as it makes a bit more sense to be there at this point.

Previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5576816-aibu-to-think-my-friend-is-overdoing-emergency-stockpiling?page=1

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.

This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

We are however going through a period where various governments throughout Europe think there is an elevated risk of some kind of problem due to global instability and we should start to get our heads around the possibility of needing to be ready for anything.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

So this is for everything from tips and considerations about what might be a good idea to do /save minimise potential risks to just straight old political bollocks talk about how things are developing.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

This does actually explicitly say to write a personalised plan for your household which everyone knows and understands and to talk about the issues you may face to help you be able mobilise for any situation which might arise. Which is exactly what this thread is ultimately for.

Get prepared for emergencies - Prepare

How to get informed and put a plan in place to prepare if an emergency comes to you in your area.

Trump around two hours ago
"You know what I suggest? I suggest they get a new leader who could make a deal because he could've made many deals and for some reason he never does... I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new President."

Zelenskyy around two hours ago
A very good and timely conversation with UK Prime Minister @AndyBurnham. Thank you for the support and for your condolences to all those who have lost loved ones because of Russian attacks. I briefed the Prime Minister on such Russian strikes that have continued unabated throughout the day today against various Ukrainian cities – aerial bombs, “shaheds,” ballistic missiles. Air defense is, of course, the first priority.

And, importantly, there should be real decisions to protect lives in Ukraine and to support our joint work in Europe for security. British leadership is always significant, and it matters that the UK will continue to ramp up sanctions pressure on Russia for its escalation. We discussed this and what could truly help diplomacy work. We are preparing the right joint steps and a meeting. Thank you.

UK mirror Zelenskyy's message

Breaking: Andy Burnham has pledged “complete solidarity” to Zelensky as Trump calls for a new Ukranian leader.

The PM talked to Zelensky after Trump’s surprise overnight deal with Putin to release Russian diesel to bring down US prices.

No10 readout states: “The Prime Minister began by recognising the last 24 hours had been difficult for Ukraine and reiterated his complete solidarity.”

Also says Burnham and Zelensky will meet in person in the coming days.

European leaders rallying round Zelensky today. Trump doing the opposite, saying just now it is time for a “new leader”.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has the overwhelming support of the United States Congress, he has the overwhelming support of the American people, and he has the overwhelming support of the Ukrainian people. Russian illegally invaded Ukraine, a sovereign and freedom-loving nation, and Russia is squarely to blame for all damage and destruction, to both lives and treasure, that has resulted from Putin’s unprovoked attack.

@ZelenskyyUa, you know that the United States Congress, and the American people, stand 100% behind you. The Ukrainian people are so blessed to have you leading them in these difficult times. We have your back, and we will stand with you until Ukrainian victory is achieved. 🇺🇸 🇺🇦

President Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel amidst Putin’s ongoing and brutal attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine makes no sense and is a betrayal of the legacy and leadership of the late Senator Lindsey Graham.

While Ukraine fights for its survival, Putin’s war machine continues to prosecute his terrorist war on civilian populations and innocent Ukrainians are dying every day.

Now, Instead of implementing the tough sanctions Lindsey Graham fought to his last breath to enact, President Trump has announced the United States is lifting sanctions on Russian energy, fueling the Putin’s war machine.

As I saw firsthand in Ukraine last month, Putin is losing this war. Ukraine has fought the Russian military to a standstill and reinvented warfare with drones taking the fight into the heart of Russia.

America should not be throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war machine. Now is the time to stand strong against Russian aggression as we did during the first Trump administration.

Putin doesn’t want peace. Putin wants Ukraine. I have no doubt that if Putin overruns Ukraine, it will only be a matter of time until Russia’s military crosses a border that our troops will have to deal with him.

America is the Leader of the Free World. For our National Security, for the security of our Allies in Europe including Ukraine, President Trump should rescind this deal immediately and return to the strong policies of our four years in the White House; impose harsh sanctions on any nation purchasing Russian energy and work with our allies to ensure Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all. MAJOR: According to the formal statement from Saudi Arabia, an AMERICAN was killed in the Ansar Allah (Houthi) attack on the King Khalid Airport in Riyadh this morning.

Saudi also states that 12 total have been killed, and 309 have been injured.

The New York Times reports 12 killed and “at least” 50 injured.

The fact that an American was killed will put even more pressure on Trump to act against the Houthis, despite all indications showing that this would be insanely reckless.

Things are moving apace and I have decision fatigue.Quite a bit of water/storage/tabs and shelf-stable food plus lighting, social housing so can't store camp stove and butane, have a rocket stove (indoor use if i use exo gel), but also very conscious of the need to increase food and water as well as look at sleeping bags, maye pop- up tents, woollen blankets and warm/thermal layers plus small power bank, maybe a kelly kettle and definitely a lifesaver/grayl or sawyer (going mad trying to work out which water filtration and/or purification makes more sense).Anyone in a similar dilemma, what would you prioritise? Can't afford to buy everything now, but feel I need to have a bulletrproof list of priorities, and stick to it.Especially with the shifting situation we're living through.

I guess its easiest to think about a probable situation and then walk through in your head what a typical day might look like.

Im not envisioning scenarios where we have to take to the countryside with tents. If its about creating a warm space inside a room, then I think there are probably solutions that can be achieved with existing duvets and blankets.

Stockpile wise

I am gathering tins of fruit, soup, and pulses, beans and tomatoes. All of which I use anyway. I will also get tuna and other fish.

Basic medication as well such as paracetamol and ibuprofen is also being added to each shop. And if we end u with less fresh food I am getting multi vitamins to add.

Things like toothpaste I like to keep a supply of.
I will make sure I have matches and candles and logs for our log burner- I worry about our lungs/ environment etc. (We don't tend to use the lig burner, however if it is that or be cold the log burner will be in. )

I also need to get a battery radio. And locate our power banks

I'm also keeping my car topped up fuel wise. We are getting an electric car at some point, but that won't be of much use in a long term power cut

FindingMeno · 11/10/2026 09:38

@sparklypinkgoblinmy absolute priority is water. Both bottled and a means to purify. And thoughts on collection - whether that be from a natural source or bowser/standpipe.
Second is essential daily medications and painkillers. A tricky one, but it's a case of just trying to put in repeats a little early each time to build a buffer.
Third is shelter/ warmth. I'm fortunate to have an open fire, but this prep also includes thermals, warm slippers, rechargeable heated clothing, hot water bottles, electric heating and blankets ( for gas shut off),survival blankets and hand warmers.
Fourth is food. Ideally with a means to heat. Also a flask for hot water.
Then I'm on to means of lighting and communication (beyond having a charged powerbank to make calls)
The communication one is almost impossible without going full on ham radio survivalist, if anything is a little more prolonged.

Russia steps up bid to kill European defence chiefs, spy agencies warn

With progress on the battlefield deadlocked in Ukraine and Russia’s economy struggling, the Kremlin has ordered an expansion of sabotage and “hybrid” operations in Europe as it seeks to fatally weaken support for Kyiv in the coming months.

Assassinations against European civilian targets — once considered taboo, even by Russia’s spy agencies — are an increasingly prominent part of those plans, European intelligence services have told the @FT.

Overnight Trump quotes
President Trump: "I could say the stupidest things and you'd clap."

"If Republicans get in power, you're going to end up in a depression. These people are incompetent"

This comes as Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick says he has secured the support of at least 218 lawmakers to block the purchase of Russia oil. This is enough to pass the bill. He's calling it the "Ronald Regan Peace Through Strength Act". I suspect it's why Trump was bitching about Republicans.

It's also showing up Trump is not on collision course with the checks and balances and he's into full dictator mode at this point.

There's sort of a fairly broad conscious building that the election is either going to be won by republicans due to election fraud or the Democratic will win but Trump will refuse to accept it.

Anthony Scaramucci (former Trump Administration)
GOP Senators: Trump hates every one of you. He will stick it in your faces. He knows you won’t shut him down. Taunting. Teasing you. Provoking. Because he detests all of you and wants you and anyone else who humiliated. When will you stop him?

Stephen Webber
The Republican Party is in no way prepared for a cornered, vengeful 2027-28 Donald Trump who thinks that THEY have all failed HIM and decides to burn the whole GOP down just because he can

The Trump Administration have adjusted the number of deaths and injured in the Iran War. This is a major scandal which isn't getting traction amongst everything else. They had previously been accused of hiding deaths which they'd strongly denied. These 'additional' deaths have been classified as 'support workers' rather than front line troops. There's been a lot of talk about just how bad US casualties have been and a cover up with talk of the loss of entire bases being hidden. Something that would bring down an Administration in other times.

Elon Musk agrees with Trump says it’s “time for Ukraine to get a new leader.”

That's a suggestion that Starlink will be switched off if Ukraine doesn't do what Trump wants. There is some sort of suggestion in this that Ukrainians are only fighting for Zelenskyy and that they would somehow give up with an alternative leader rather than out of nationalism. That's a stretch. It's more likely to lead to Ukrainians supporting Zelenskyy too.

Not only that but in removing support for Ukraine, Ukraine is forced into a position where the gloves are off and the US leverage becomes less in terms of how much it can hold back on what Ukraine can do. Ukraine will have to resort to absolutely anything to destroy Russia just to survive. It would escalate not de-escalate. They've taken out a third Yanex data centre over night btw - it's network, which is basically the Russian internet, is now 78% down. The below also explains why switching off Starlink doesn't stop the Russian oil industry. Also note Europe's (UK's) role in terms of continuing intelligence.

Yaraslav Trofimov
Starlink is not used in Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries because it doesn’t work above Russia.
If Elon Musk decides to signal his dislike of Zelensky by turning off Starlink, it will lead to many thousands more Ukrainian deaths on the frontline, will severely damage the SpaceX brand internationally (countries will know they can’t rely on it in times of real crisis), but will have zero effect on Ukrainian strikes against the Russian oil and gas industry.
It will also not end the war.

Weirdly, there's reports that the activity of Russian troll farms is down massively. Ahead of the US elections. Now put my first point on this thread about the Ref in context with Yanex and the US Midterms and Trump being really pissed ATM. So much of these issues are heavily intertwined and are converging together. That's not a good thing because there will be an inevitable crunch point to it all. Fuck knows what that's going to look like.

Saudi officials have now confirmed 321 casualties of the Riyadh Airport missile (combined deaths and injuries total). The Yemenis have warned everyone to stay away from Saudi airports and that they are forcing Saudi airspace closed

We've so much toothpaste and DP's body sprays because every time he's out he thinks he's out of them, and I pointed out we now have enough for the rest of his life, so he better not buy more! 😂

I'd also recommend buying some paper plates so you don't need to waste water on washing up.
