Crisis What Crisis? Is my friend over doing the stockpiling and am I too? Continuation thread (2)

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

I'm moving it over to chat from AIBU as it makes a bit more sense to be there at this point.

Previous thread
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5576816-aibu-to-think-my-friend-is-overdoing-emergency-stockpiling?page=1

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.

This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

We are however going through a period where various governments throughout Europe think there is an elevated risk of some kind of problem due to global instability and we should start to get our heads around the possibility of needing to be ready for anything.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

So this is for everything from tips and considerations about what might be a good idea to do /save minimise potential risks to just straight old political bollocks talk about how things are developing.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

This does actually explicitly say to write a personalised plan for your household which everyone knows and understands and to talk about the issues you may face to help you be able mobilise for any situation which might arise. Which is exactly what this thread is ultimately for.

Get prepared for emergencies - Prepare

How to get informed and put a plan in place to prepare if an emergency comes to you in your area.

Re meds - im on blood pressure medication and statins and have built up a buffer unintentionally by forgetting to take them!

I do feel re the plauge, it is possible to make mistakes. Even in very high stake laboratories. Like in my career in IT. I have seen some pretty major fuck ups on critical systems. A tiny mistake can take a system off line for many hours or even a day and one such cock up took about 50 of the cleverest people I have ever met, ten hours to even pick apart how we had fucked up. Another thing is doing something you know is stupid and risky so keep on doing it as its never gone wrong....yet. Until it goes wrong in a way that even a idiot could have seen coming.

Have you ever stod on a chair you know was dangerous to get to a window?

So although it might be hard if you follow the rules to take down a national critical IT system or infect something in a clean lab. I have seen both. So its not impossible. The thing is you never tell the world what idiots you are as you have a brand name to protect and you are that brand. So maybe it was a consiparcy but its possible its not. My mum would have understanding or either my job in science or IT. It would be hard to even explain either on here.

Trump: "I could've done very bad things to Hillary Clinton. I could've done very very bad things to Joe Biden. I could've done very bad things to Barack Hussein Obama ... I can do whatever I want, if I want."

Is there still an air raid shelter near you???

The closest one is 'Removed'. There's another not that far away that is extant (I think a neighbour told me about it once) but it's down a steep hill so I'd never get there on foot (am disabled).

Natsku · 08/10/2026 05:46

Despite living in a country that is famous for its civil defence shelters there are zero public ones in my town, nearest is in the city 80km away that will obviously be primarily for city residents. My workplace has an old shelter though (used to be a military base) and is 20 minutes drive from home.

Several reports this morning that Trump has considered reigniting the war against Iran before the midterms

Fairly quiet night otherwise.

Hurricane Rachel looks like it will hit Vegas and Salt Lake City. By then it will be a tropical storm. Vegas certainly doesn't cope well with heavy rainfall so that's going to be interesting.

Hurricane Isaias has now shut down production at Shells Mars & Olympus, Ursa, Vito, Appomattox and Stones oil rigs. That's a lot of oil production lost.

It appears I've inadvertently bought a lifetime supply of nettle! I forgot how little it weighs so 250g takes up a lot of space!

I drink it daily as it's anti inflammatory but will be keeping some by the hob to boost the nutritional value of anything that gets cooked.

Does anyone else feel like it's all gone a bit 'quiet'. All of a sudden there nothing in the news about weather or stocking up or oil. Is it the calm before the storm? Very little from Russian/Ukraine or Iran/USA or the whole 'is it, isn't it the plague' from Russia. Mind you I have clear memories of hearing about this 'distant virus' in China and bypassing it completely in the news cos you know 'it's China, it's far away, that doesn't affect me'

Def getting more 'autumn like' now. Only 4pm and feels dark already although in fairness it was a cloudy afternoon. Had the heating on each day this week for an hour or two. You don't realise how much you rely on systems just to work. I suppose each time I put the CH on, or boil the kettle or turn the lights on I'm aware that we might have to live without it for a time. Sobering indeed.

Have I missed something? The conversation seems to be on air raid shelters now?
Is that my next project - do I have to built one in the garden? In fairness the dog has already started a big hole out there so I guess he could be in charge of digging.
Seriously though - why are we identifying air raid shelters?

Well if the mum goes 'missing' or 'has an accident' then I think we can safely assume something is being covered up.

Do they still have the hundreds in quarantine or have they been released? I mean if they are all better you would think Russia would want to shout about it in the news. Surely they know by now if anyone else is sick if the time to catch it is only 24 hours?
Can't help thinking about Chernobyl and how they tried to keep it quiet. Only when neighbouring countries started to pick up radiation signals and it became obvious did they fess up.

Holeymoley28 · 08/10/2026 16:25

Diesel has dropped by a whole 1p locally.

Tesco are giving out 8p off vouchers when you spend so much in store.

So that’s a lightening load for the instant right now.

No air repaid shelters near me a million pill boxes though and anti tank barricades.

Just a temporary lull I reckon. Not quiet in France though! Riots ongoing.

As for the shelters, bombs are so much more powerful now I don't think those old fashioned ones would be much protection.

Pill boxes? What like for sorting your medication into each day of the week?
Bit confused by that.......

Are the riots still happening. I didn't see anything in the telegraph today when I browsed the headlines.

I wish they would stop reporting how many people are arriving on small boats. I mean if we can't do anything about it and we are not allowed to protest it, then what good does it do to wind people up continually. With the way things are at the moment making people more angry seems daft so i wish they would just shut up about it.

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/10/2026 16:59

I thought about filling the bath to flush the loo if I heard there were going to be problems with the water supply. Easy enough to remove the lid and refill the cistern with a bucket. Then I remembered how unreliable the bath pop up waste is, it has never sealed very well, just long enough for a bath. I thought I'd buy a proper rubber plug but came across silicone plugs which fit every size. They are very well reviewed, they are a flat disc which sucks on to the plughole, with a lug to release them. So I bought a couple on Amazon for about a fiver.

Munchyseeds2 · 08/10/2026 17:12

Be aware that you will only be able to 'flush' the loo for a short time in a power cut before everything starts backing up😣

Yes the riots are going on, Agenda Free TV on YT has been showing live coverage of the Paris riots - thousands of people there, but the area they were in has been largely cleared although there are people still milling about.

There was footage on twitter earlier today of someone firing a home made mortar at a French School.

Footage now of massive protest crowds around the Bastille.

Definitely still kicking off. Water cannons and tear gas being used by the riot police.

Should go up the British editorial news choices again pretty quickly I suspect.
