As a kid and no nothing happened that wasn’t done by a living human!

Wow.

I find them discomforting in that they sit in a space between my self defined sceptic label and the but it did happen to me thing. So I want to write them off but can't quite do it. I'd stay well away, and have done since the tent incident.

It is nonsense but weird. It is like winning the lottery - 3 million to one and then your husband's corpse turns up when your gas gets faulty. How many thousands of Ukraine families will have to go through with this this winter because of Trumps BFF?

CleanSkin · 03/10/2026 22:39

Don’t have anything to do with them. They are simply too dangerous. Sorry to be a voice of negativity, but your mental & spiritual health is too precious.

It’s unnerving me just reading these without actually doing one myself!!

Same here 😂 I regularly get sleep paralysis and now feel like I’ll get it tonight! I do believe in spirits and was always warned it’s something you don’t mess with

Maybe take your own advice.

My school friends and I did a make shift one back
in the day and as cynical as I am, this freaked the shit out of me/us. My friend who (I know this sounds mean) wasn’t the best speller, had her finger on the glass and it was whizzing about spelling out messages, who they were etc. She was looking away as it was happening, there was no way she could’ve made it up. She said her house felt weird afterwards. Wouldn’t do it again!

PeppyMintCat · 03/10/2026 23:23

Please can someone explain how does it mess up your head? Is it because you worry about the things it has told you? Does anyone think they bring bad luck.
I did do one when I was 17 and I was very vulnerable at the time. It told me I was a bad person, but only said that to me and not the others. I felt like it singled me out in a way 😨

Yes, as a young teen. With mates at their house. A cup moved across the table.

Always thought it was one of the others that did it. Makes more sense than it being paranormal as a result of a few kids sat in the dark saying wooo woo woo.

Exactly. We had the classic ‘teens scaring one another with stories about which of us was going to die in a car crash aged 19 according to the spirits’ stuff. It was the main amusement when you were babysitting in the eighties and your friends came over. We’ve all survived into our fifties despite the spirits.

It’s about as dangerous as playing Monopoly.

cornflakecrunchie · 03/10/2026 23:51

@PeppyMintCat
They are dangerous because you don't know what spirit is coming through, you could be inviting anything in. Plus when people freak out, they run, & don't close the session down.
Best to avoid.

And this explains it all. Off the back of some random MN post you feel like you’ll have sleep paralysis.

you are literally just reading some words on one of the biggest forums in the world

Psychological phenomena is as a real as people

I'm extremely skeptical about all things ghost and ghoul-related, but I did meet a medium once who was a member of a spiritualist church. She didn't do paid readings or anything and she was vehemently against ouija boards, when someone mentioned them. She said they're very, very dangerous and that was enough for me!
Two friends of mine joined in a session at a party and a dog lead hanging on a coat peg started swinging madly. I wasn't there, so can't say it's true.

Yes I read an article where a Medium said how you behave in this life decides what plane you go on in the next life, so child killers, rapists etc end up in the pit of fire, and they're looking for any way they can to get back in to our world and an ouija board is a way in..Confused not sure how true that is but I wouldn't like to test the theory out!

maxslice · 04/10/2026 02:43

Back at uni. Found the board on a street. It called my boyfriend and me “banal noise”. We got rid of the board the next morning.

maxslice · 04/10/2026 02:56

Anyone remember the episode of Downtown Abbey that had the staff using the Ouija board?

theodoretrout · 04/10/2026 03:35

MapleCutie · 02/10/2026 22:29

There must be something in it as lots of people won't touch one 🤨

Reason for that is that it can exacerbate and trigger existing mental fragility and issues, and other people who won't touch it are skeptical. The skeptic writer James Randi famously offered one million US dollars to anyone who can prove paranormal activity under scientific conditions. The prize remains unclaimed.

Scratch away at anyone energetically promoting paranormal activity and you'll find someone desperate for attention, or most often, a scammer.

HobnobsChoice · 03/10/2026 12:34

I wouldn't do it unless I was with a group of Derren Brown fans (or visiting @Miyagi99 for Halloween!🎃) because I would find the dramatic reaction to anything happening completely irritating.

The Hungarian words has tickled me deeply. How did all the other non Hungarian speakers know it was Hungarian if the one person who could speak Hungarian wasn't in the room. All the accents are missing for a start.

I like the collective invention of a little boy who died in a plane crash. That's the kind of stuff that my husband would have done as a teen

Glad to have amused you ;). They wrote it down phonetically enough that my dad could recognise it--I know Hungarian is a difficult language (duh) but they managed enough to make them decide to stop.

FountainCourted · 04/10/2026 05:08

My brother did one with his friends at uni. No idea what happened as for a long time they wouldn’t tell me and now I don’t want to know, but it caused him to move out of halls and move back home.

I experienced a few things at home myself soon after he moved back, and my parents insisted I was dreaming and were dismissive about it. It was only years later that I found out why he really moved home (they all claimed he decided to save money) and they were trying to protect me. Apparently he experienced things at home for a while as well but I’ve not asked questions as it genuinely terrifies me. But the timing of what I experienced against him moving back home because he did an ouija board that I didn’t know about until years later is too much of a coincidence for my experience not to be real or for it to be unconnected.

Rosieposy89 · 04/10/2026 08:25

I would never do one. Too terrifying. Great thread 👏

StrawberryFields74 · 04/10/2026 15:47

My Mum and her friends did ouija when they all lived away around age 17. She thought others were moving it until one time when the others all took their hand off, to sneeze or whatever and hers was the only one left with the glass moving.

She said it got really addictive and they would do it most nights. They once got a spirit who said it was the dog of one of the girls' Mum lol. They thought this was ridiculous and the girl in question said: "Okay, well where is my Mum then?" It said: laid on the sofa. She said "no she would never do that". The next day she rang and asked her Mum what she did the the previous day. She said she had felt ill and laid on the sofa and the dog was at her feet asleep.

They also contacted the spirit of a boy who said he was asleep, he was swearing his head off.

One of the last times they asked the spirit what colour my Mum was wearing (was red) and it said: "crimson" which was not a word they would have used. It said it was a relative of my Mum and it spelt out "Leave this alone."

They never did it again but my Mum was really scared about the whole thing for quite a long time😬

dapplepot · 04/10/2026 15:54

Years ago I did while staying with my friend and it worked or at least the planchette was moving although nothing was making much sense. Then after my arm felt a bit funny and I started doing automatic writing and signing someone else's name but again nothing that meant anything to any of us. Overall a very interesting experience and while I suspect it was all down to the ideomotor effect I retain a sceptical but open minded stance on such matters.

JudyTeeny · 04/10/2026 18:03

@hourglass2 oh my goodness I haven't heard that before! That's a frightening thought.

Why would the supernatural pit of flame to which child killers are condemned be equipped with an escape portal that relies on a board game pretty much exclusively played by bored teenagers winding one another up?

Also, I bet ouija board use has gone into terminal decline with the advent of smartphones. Teenagers are choosing to scroll TikToks rather than putting their finger on a glass and trying to spell CHLOE U R GUNNA BE 1ST 2 DIE.
