Just wondering as I never have due to horror stories. Have you ever done one and did anything weird happen?

Just for fun stories and curiosity 😁

Yes I have - the glass flew across the table in random directions at speed. Bloody terrifying at the time.

FrippEnos · 02/10/2026 23:02

Some girls did this in a dorm at college.

Scared the crap out of themselves and all the other girls in the dorm and the college ended up getting a local priest to do an exorcism or blessing before they would go back in the dorm.

giraffesandpigeonstoo · 02/10/2026 23:07

Yes did it with group of friends ages around 12.

Used a coin rather than a glass and it moved and spelled stuff out but was clearly one of us (it wasn’t me).

It was all “a bit of fun” and nothing really scary happened.

But I would never do it again and would hate my kids to ever do it.

Just feels like one of those things you don’t mess with.

Don't ever mess with that sort of stuff because it messes with people who are vulnerable, emotionally, psychologically or whatever.
Doesn't have to be real to cause harm.

My father told us about a family who held a seance in a house across the road from his parents home it was done with a Ouija board their teenage son went berserk as if possessed. He was taken to hospital, then put in an institution because he never recovered.

ITMA2000 · 02/10/2026 23:07

We did it as children. It spelt out: 'It is me, Martha'. We had no idea what it meant, and it is an unusual name nowadays. Years later my mother said that her mother (Martha) had had a gas hob suddenly start up to boil a kettle at the time a train stopped at Swansea station in 1917, to disembark corpses from WW1. Her husband was one.

Wow.

I find them discomforting in that they sit in a space between my self defined sceptic label and the but it did happen to me thing. So I want to write them off but can't quite do it. I'd stay well away, and have done since the tent incident.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 02/10/2026 23:14

Yep. As my question (part of the group) asked it my dad's name. Assumed it would give the name everyone knew him as, but it gave his real first name, that no one knew.

Never done it since, I was so freaked out.

Creepybookworm · 02/10/2026 23:14

Used a makeshift one, pissed with friends in uni halls. It moved. We could tell.no one was pushing it. It didn't spell out anything comprehensible. It was bloody terrifying to be honest and I am a massive sceptic. Would never do it again.

Frannieisnthappy · 02/10/2026 23:19

Nope never but my mum, gran and auntie plus their friends used to in 60/70s. I grew up hearing lots of stories which were equally fascinating and scary.

They were/are a bit woo like but its not for me. I can take Tarot, palm reading etc but not raising spirits.

My grans was a flat in a Victorian villa (top floor) and it had a very strange atmosphere. Although my mum did in her youth she would have never entertained doing a ouiji board in our home.

OldWallpaper · 02/10/2026 23:25

I’d never do this. I don’t even like thinking about it 😱

Namechanger167 · 02/10/2026 23:34

Name changed for this (not sure why). Did a makeshift board with friends 30 years ago at uni. We did it for a laugh and were all very sceptical. Freakiest experience of my life. I had always thought beforehand that there would be one person in the group that was actually moving the glass and it would just be a giggle. My memory is that the glass was gliding about like an air hockey puck to the extent that we were all struggling to keep our fingers on it. I remember it felt as if it was rising up underneath our fingers. Never experienced anything like it. We got freaked out that we ended the session quite quickly and I don’t think anything really horrible happened. We smashed the glass and ripped up the paper we’d drawn the board on. I’d never do it again.

No but I can answer this - no, nothing happened 😅

this is why I wouldn't/didn't do it. And it is most likely you'll do it in your teens when the chances are very high of someone in the group being vulnerable or unstable or unwittingly influencing it but not in a fun way.

Friendlygingercat · 03/10/2026 00:33

I have never done a Ouiija
board but i| have been to a few spiritualist sessions where a relative was the medium. The room went suddenly very cold and things did happen. A little table we used bumped out messages and even flew around the room. There were no financial contributions of the participants so no point in deception. It un-nerved me so I only went to about 4 sessions.

BeurialJimberley · 03/10/2026 00:40

You do all realise that it was invented as a parlour game and is trademarked by Hasbro don’t you?

Its literally nothing to do with the occult

You do realise this is horse shit don’t you? So much anecdotal rubbish on this thread

Yes, this is how I remember it too: the glass moving so fast that we wouldn't have had time to spell out the words so quickly.

I did Ouija a few times, in my teenage years. Every time was different, but each was very, very unsettling, but also fascinating, and darkly thrilling.

One time we were laughing so much because the glass was cracking jokes on the board. The humour was unusual and nothing like the sense of humour any of us possessed.

Another time the police turned up (it was 1am) and said they'd had a phone call from our house - a shared student house - to say that there was a disturbance and someone needed help. But the house didn't have a landline phone and it was many years before mobile phones. We were all stunned.

twentyonefrogs · 03/10/2026 01:15

My mother has. She refuses to speak about it. She’s very ‘un’woo. I’m woo so I won’t ask her any specifics

OnTheBoardwalk · 03/10/2026 01:19

No no no never. I could never do it myself. As PP have said you do really be mindful of the health of people you do it with as well

StupidCupid50 · 03/10/2026 01:27

It’s unnerving me just reading these without actually doing one myself!!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 03/10/2026 01:28

MapleCutie · 02/10/2026 22:29

There must be something in it as lots of people won't touch one 🤨

The something is far too many excitable people with febrile imaginations and not nearly enough scepticism.

DesperateforSunshine · 03/10/2026 01:49

I think I’m sensible and logical and definitely not ‘woo’. However as a child we lived in a 600yo Manor House and I definitely saw two ‘ghosts’ no question about it.

My grandmother died in a nursing home when I was 4yo and I woke up screaming at 3.30am that granny was dead. My mother then received a phone call at 8am to let her know that her mother (my grandmother) had died an hour earlier - we knew better.

I am now 49 and would not now or ever have considered ‘playing’ with a Oiuja board - and I am completely anti ‘woo’ even with my experiences which some people will laugh off but I know what I have seen and experienced

sparrownetsuke · 03/10/2026 04:03

My parents did one with friends and the glass started spelling out words in Hungarian. The only person who spoke Hungarian was my dad so they sent him out of the room. The words continued in Hungarian.

Namemechangey · 03/10/2026 04:57

Yes, in years 7 and 8 at secondary me and a group of friends went through a phase of doing them every chance we could, and I did move the cup myself sormetimes, others did too but we all pretended we didn’t and it was spooky and very fun. We had a ghost friend who always came through, called Anna, in reality it was a joint effort that created the whole back story of Anna, sitting for hours with the oija board and probably we all contributed to pushing and pulling that cup around although no one ever said it was them and we all went along with it being a real spirit. Maybe it was but I know for a fact I did move the cup. It’s a psychological thing, everyone wants it to work so everyone gently pressures the cup and it moves.

OtterlyAstounding · 03/10/2026 05:06

It's well known that it's just the ideomotor reflex, not spirits. People will move things unconsciously, without even realising they've done it - especially if they're susceptible to the idea that spirits might be trying to communicate with them.

Here's a short article on the reflex.
