Would you vote to re-join the EU in another referendum?

Simple question. If there is another referendum to re-join the EU, will you be voting to re-join?

This isn't to have a go at anyone who supported Brexit, or who supported Remain, it's just a quick straw poll. Thank you. Smile

If anyone is wondering, (or cares!) I think I will vote to re-join. (I won't say at this point what I voted for last time...)

The EU would have us back in a heartbeat as long as we didn’t demand special concessions.

They have already confirmed this.

Well of course they say that publically. And they need our cash. But the leaders in Germany and France are likely to be different in due course.

The EU won't make it easy for us. If we don't get special treatment that means the euro as that is required for all new members and we are in too much debt to give up our monetary policy unfortunately. All our debt is currently in £s.

Yes Macron is different politically to Le Pen.

100% we are much stronger together

Newbutoldfather · 08/10/2026 09:55

@Bagpuss1200 ,

‘100% we are much stronger together’

What does that actually mean?

We are together militarily via NATO. Economically, we are definitely stronger together via free trade, so the free market makes sense. But beyond that?

Do you want a United States of Europe? And, if not, why not? And, if so, how far would you take it ? Would Turkey be welcome, for instance?

I think the issues are quite complex and that nation states do have value.

The problem is even the members of the EU don't seem to want a United States of Europe.

Which is as we both know a significant part of the problem. Monetary policy can't do the heavy lifting on fiscal deharmonisation forever.

At the moment yes I can see France and Germany want the UK back in the EU. Germany is scared it is going to lose its export markets to China (hence Made in the EU), and the French whose economy is becoming increasingly unmanageable want Treasure Island back to help shore up the EU financial position.

We'd be mad to take this on at the moment. Stay out and stay flexible makes more sense.

They have already confirmed this.

If that doesn’t prove that the EU is in the shit, what does?

EU will demand that the UK is a net contributor, but at a much higher cost than before. A figure of £40 billion per year was mentioned on BBC Question Time.

That’s massively more than before in return for a deal that is guaranteed to be massively worse than before.

Who’s the they in this case? I’ve seen Macron and one of his gov say it. Perhaps Merz not sure

Newbutoldfather · 08/10/2026 12:55

@EEexpat ,

I agree that I prefer the free market as opposed to full membership.

But do remember, for that EUR 40 bio, we would get EU investment in return, so it is nowhere near a net figure.

Obviously, we should only return were it a net economic positive.

Newbutoldfather · 08/10/2026 13:04

@EEexpat ,

Who mentioned Eur 40 bio, by the way?

On a quick search, apparently most analysts estimate roughly half of that: £17-22 billion.

EEexpat · 08/10/2026 14:13

@Newbutoldfather

Who mentioned Eur 40 bio, by the way?

It was said by Fiona Bruce on question time 24 September 2026. £20 billion was at the lower end, up to £40 billion for full membership. Either way, the EU, particularly France, will want the deal to be seen as punishment for daring to leave.

Jean Claude Juncker stated that UK will never rejoin in his lifetime. Reasons he gave were:

EU is wounded by UK decision to leave

UK is too close to the US

US is not popular in the EU

Newbutoldfather · 08/10/2026 14:32

@EEexpat ,

Apparently Fiona Bruce said £20bio to £40bio. Even that is too high and she is wrong. In any event, it would be a negotiation. No one can force us to join.

‘Jean Claude Juncker stated that UK will never rejoin in his lifetime.’

Do we care what the Luxembourgois has to say?!

But who are you listening to? When you say they want us back

Which names specifically do you mean?

EEexpat · 08/10/2026 14:41

@Newbutoldfather

Point was that every member of the EU has to agree to an application to join. Mixed views are coming from the EU.

Barnier said UK could join with the same opt outs as before.

Poland said UK should not be allowed to have the same opt outs as before.

Juncker has said UK will not join in his lifetime.

Newbutoldfather · 08/10/2026 14:44

Virtually everyone who has commented.

Sanchez, Macron, German ambassador etc. Has anyone said we wouldn’t be welcome if we applied since Burnham mentioned it?

Newbutoldfather · 08/10/2026 14:45

We won’t get any opt outs, I doubt, but I have never claimed that we would.

Ok so Sanchez, Macron and German person

I’m not surprised at any of these mentioned, they are each struggling politically in a big way in their own countries. And will possibly be out soon.

No! As a PP has pointed out, we would have to adopt the Euro.
yes, I would like us to be part of the single market.

Shocking! Maybe we should re-adopt the Groat!

bathdragon · 08/10/2026 19:19

what benefits we were taken to the cleaners in the eu and got very little back

Timeforachange26 · 08/10/2026 20:05

No as they'd have us over a barrel and it would be a shit deal

Gold sovereigns, surely? We don't want to be wasting our time on groats?

LizzieW1969 · 11/10/2026 21:37

Yes definitely! I voted Remain in 2016 and I would definitely vote to rejoin in another referendum.

Will a vote to rejoin guarantee acceptance by the EU?

How would I know the answer to that question? There won’t even be a referendum until after the next general election, so it’s unlikely to happen before 2030. And it will only happen if Labour win again.

I can’t remember only say how I myself would vote if there were to be a referendum. And I would vote to rejoin.
