Would you vote to re-join the EU in another referendum?

Simple question. If there is another referendum to re-join the EU, will you be voting to re-join?

This isn't to have a go at anyone who supported Brexit, or who supported Remain, it's just a quick straw poll. Thank you. Smile

If anyone is wondering, (or cares!) I think I will vote to re-join. (I won't say at this point what I voted for last time...)

Yes! I want to be a European.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 12/10/2026 16:38

Yes. Assuming that the US and NATO would have our back was a big mistake. Europe needs to work together, especially due to the growing threat from Russia. We are also stronger together when negotiating with the US and China.

Meadowfinch · 12/10/2026 16:46

No to rejoining the EU, and having the Euro.
Yes to the EEA

I have a niece working at a University in Germany and a nephew working as an environmental consultant in Denmark. Both posts gained in the last 5 years. It doesn't seem to be any great limiter on opportunity.

Yes! I want to be a European.

Membership of the EU is not necessary to be a European 😁

@AQuietBatPerson ,

‘Yes! I want to be a European’

You are a European and, unless there is a major and unexpected tectonic event, you will remain so.

What do you mean by being a European? Is that more like being a Frenchman, a Spaniard or a Latvian?

Are you American?

I mean a European politically, with freedom to roam, work and live across the continent.

And I want the stability of being in the EU.

Why is everyone so obsessed about just moving away? Do you hate the UK that much?

How is it stable ? It's very unstable at the moment politically ,ecconomically and socially

100% we are much stronger together

Not according to Sir Richard dearlove. We are as strong as our weakest caravan .once arguably romania now possibly Germany with their spy chief arrested for treason .

Even now mi5 are trawling through documents to see what we may have compromised through our relationship with Germany even outside the EU.

It’s not that stable. France is experiencing upheaval, Spain just called a snap election. Germany is split politically.

Seaitoverthere · 12/10/2026 20:32

I was strongly pro remain and a European dual national, was devastated at the result for ages. However I don’t think I would vote to rejoin now unless it was extremely clear what the terms would be and left no room for ambiguity.

I feel we have made our beds and need to lay in them , we aren’t team players and it would be better for us and the EU if we just have a close relationship. Never thought I would be saying this 10 years ago but times change.

I don't hate it, but its future isn't looking very bright and I really want my children to have other options.

Is it so much better in other European countries? And it's still possible to work. My sister has been working in Germany since 2021 and recently gone to switzerland. Her company sorted out the visa

What makes you think it’s brighter in the EU? Have you not seen the troubles in France.

France is now in a financially worse position than both Italy and Greece.
It’s doomed.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 13/10/2026 01:07

I don't think France is doomed! It has many natural blessings and attracts more international tourists than any other country in the world.

I would rather my children had the choice and freedom of at least 27 countries to live and work in, rather than just two (the UK and Ireland).

Almost all of the job vacancies I see these days state that applicants must have the right to work in the UK and that unfortunately, the employer isn't able to offer sponsorship for the role. Is Germany more generous? I'd be very surprised if Switzerland is!

Meandthegherkin · 13/10/2026 01:17

I don’t think my DCs would want to work in France if the National Rally is in charge. I assume people who are worried about Reform running the show in the UK wouldn’t be heading there as an alternative:

EEexpat · 13/10/2026 07:16

@EstoyRobandoSuCasa

I worked in the EU more than ever since Brexit. As a UK passport holder, I can be present in the EU 90 days per 180 without a residence visa.

Since COVID, hybrid working has become the norm. Particularly in the service sector.

For example, I fly into the Netherlands Monday morning (one hour flight). I leave Thursday evening. The following week, I leave Wednesday evening. Add annual leave and public holidays, I have never once exceeded 90 days per 180 between 2020 and 2025.

So, the view that UK passport holders can’t work in the EU is incorrect.

EEexpat · 13/10/2026 07:21

@Timeforachange26

My daughter has worked in Germany since 2021. Because she is good at languages (English, French, German, Spanish) her German employer was prepared to sponsor a Visa.

@EstoyRobandoSuCasa

Take note. If people have the skills the EU is short of, they will employ people from outside the EU.

Newbutoldfather · 13/10/2026 07:39

There is nothing amazing about the EU. They are a bunch of countries, some like ours, some much newer to the democracy and human rights’ game. They have very similar problems to us: ageing populations, ballooning government debt and lack of infrastructure investment. I still think that the UK is a great and powerful nation; not compared to the glory days but certainly compared to the EU. A lot of those who eulogise the EU do so because they have had great holidays (or business travel) there.

I have family members who have lived and currently live there. They have similar gripes and moans to anyone who lives in the UK.

Having said that, we are geographically a part of Europe, and that really matters. The EU are, by far, our largest trading partner, and most UK travel is to the EU. For that reason, we do need to be in the single market. There is no real substitute for it. (Well, if there is, it is a low tax, low benefit, low regulation model, which no one really wants).

As for EU full membership, you have to believe in the ‘project’. That means economic convergence, a European government and U.S. becoming a state within the United States of Europe. I can see why that is appealing for some. It isn’t for me! I don’t see cultural convergence and I do see a huge democratic deficit.

The idea that the EU and Euro can continue in the current half way house isn’t realistic economically or historically.

Newbutoldfather · 13/10/2026 07:42

Lots of typos and errors!

*I still believe that we are a great nation compared to the individual EU nations (similar or greater), not compared to the whole EU.

Us becoming a state within The United States of Europe (not U.S).

I agree with most of this and the contradiction we would face between ever closer union (ie political union) and not being in the euro. We would ultimately necessarily be second tier members. I don't agree with the single market as it is currently set up as the UK should not sign up to freedom of movement.
