Would you vote to re-join the EU in another referendum?

Simple question. If there is another referendum to re-join the EU, will you be voting to re-join?

This isn't to have a go at anyone who supported Brexit, or who supported Remain, it's just a quick straw poll. Thank you. Smile

If anyone is wondering, (or cares!) I think I will vote to re-join. (I won't say at this point what I voted for last time...)

I voted Remain last time and I’d vote to rejoin, even though I fully understood and was sympathetic to the reasons why people voted Brexit. It just never made economic sense.

EasternStandard · 07/10/2026 18:11

Given we’re pushing ahead of other EU countries and it seems to be due to AI / tech I’d think more on whether to join that regulation.

We matched Germany for the decade pre Brexit but now moving ahead, keep going with that.

But that's a lie! Get yourself around some central and eastern European countries if the EU! You will struggle to find an immigration issue in many of those countries, you willl hardly.see African or Asian people and they are EU countries who have been allowed to control immigration as they like! Leave voters were made absolute mugs of! We have full ability to control our immigration just like central and eastern Europe have and do!

African and Asians presumably not coming from the EU? What do you mean?

Retrictions on benefits for EU immigrants (so to curb the carrot)was one of the requests by the UK during the renegotiation prior to Brexit. Apparently at that time freedom of movement was sacrosanct and the rules couldn't be changed to what we requested.

Obviously the rules weren't actually sacrosanct if breached by other countries subsequently so its a shame the EU didnt agree prior to Brexit. If they had we would probably still be in.

Although our economy is doing better than EU economies.

We have full ability to control our immigration just like central and eastern Europe have and do!

UK ranks fifth in terms of immigration, behind:

1st Germany
2nd France
3rd Spain
4th Italy

If the EU were capable of controlling entry into Europe via Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea there would be nobody appearing in Calais. Hence no boat crossings from Calais to the UK.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 07/10/2026 18:21

TBF it is quite funny (in a funny way that almost makes you cry) that Andy Burnham said he was going to end divisive politics and opened the biggest and most divisive can of worms there is!!

It was a conscious choice for Spain and Germany to welcome immigration

Yes and PMQs without point scoring. And then he point scores.

I sometimes think his mouth isn't connected to his brain. He just says stuff. Like security cant come at the expesne of social security which immediately makes anyone with a brain shit themselves given the state of our defences and current state of the world.

And Brexit. Presumably he thinks that people might ignore all the destructive things Labour are doing if only they get the chance to rejoin the EU if they vote left. As a weak country. Who knows...he may be right. But now he has to follow it through. And as we all know that is all consuming, not a quick easy or pleasant process.

I think Burnham will keep mentioning the EU up until the next general election in the hope it will sway voters.

And of course if we rejoin the single market, freedom of movement will mean all immigrants can come to the UK and claim benefits. Those are the rules.

But retirees have been self sufficient they for decades, they didn't go and live there for free, they paid their way! It wasn't that they weren't paying their way before but now they have to be worth a lot more just get the right to live there! You are inventing false issues to defend the hideous thing you did to your country! I aren't asking you to care about me, I sure as hell couldn't give a stuff about you but you need to realise that most people gave a stuff about their freedom of movement whether it be for retirement, visiting family, businesses, studying, summers working as holiday reps, musicians touring...you badly damaged so much with your vote! Have the decency to understand vast scale of people and jobs impacted by what you voted for and that's not just pensioners wanting to retire overseas who are impacted! You ruined lots of lives, you stole citizenships many of us were born with! As I said on another post you've created a demoralised society where 2 British people can have completely different rights depending on if they can get an EU passport or not! That's disgraceful! You shouldn't have attitude, you should be apologising! Most of the population hate not having their freedom of movement! It's not me that's the minority here, it's you!

Calm down dear.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 07/10/2026 18:31

I would vote join but this isn’t a very representative sample so the % doesn’t mean much.

Also even if it was a 100% yes vote from UK, the EU has to be on board too…

Not exactly. Immigrants don't want to stay there - these countries have much stricter welfare system and their cultures are much more homogenous and unwelcoming to immigrants, so it's not like they can control the issue, they don't attract one.

@GasPanic ,

I kind of agree with you.

As I said, I think we should rejoin the single market, not the EU.

We would still have to align our standards, but not obey their regulations wholesale.

I think, like all things, it would have its disadvantages. However, I do trust the economists who say it would be a net gain of £50-60 bio, which we could really do with right now.

What do you mean by 'right now'? Which economists are claiming an instant boost of £50-£60 billion (in extra taxes per year over and above expected tax growth?) as soon as we rejoin the single market? Have they accounted for the membership fee?

Newbutoldfather · 07/10/2026 18:59

I don’t think freedom of movement within the EU means you can just turn up and claim benefits! That was one of the lies told by the Leave campaign.

‘Key Benefits

  • Work Without Permits: You can look for a job or work in any member state without obtaining a prior work visa. 1, 2]
  • Equal Treatment: You receive the same working conditions, pay, social security, and tax advantages as local nationals. 1, 2]
  • Short and Long-Term Residence: You can stay up to three months with a valid ID or passport, and longer if you meet basic criteria like employment, study, or self-sufficiency. 1, 2, 3]’

You only get 3 months unless you can support yourself or have a job.

As I said there's a retirement visa. You need need to be self sufficient and follow the rules of the country. That's it. It's not impossible to go there. You can still go on holiday and visit family. Student visas are a thing you know. Many people study abroad still and there's so many university exchange programmes.

Playaway still operate - though come on. It's just basically one big piss up.

Touring musicians facing paperwork issues - blame the EU for all this then. The UK wanted things to be simpler.

I know someone who's life massively benefit as they set up, ran and sold their successful business that wasn't hampered by EU regs

Ok tell me you don't know what you voted for without telling me you don't know what you've voted for! Let me explain a few things to you, having a chunk of the population retire overseas was beneficial because those people could keep a lot healthier in the warm sunshine, be less at the mercy of painful conditions that cold weather exacerbates, that's a chunk of people not burdening the NHS winter!
These visas you speak of, do you think you just ask for it and you get it? Well here's the kicker, Brexit now means that such as Spain want a retired couple to have at least 30k of pension money coming in a year - do you think many people have got that? Especially couples where the wife as been mainly a stay at home mum and part time worker! The visa isn't the issue, it's the big fat Brexit price tag you voted to put on it!

Now far more of the elderly population are here and suffering more health issues that burden the NHS in winter! I have fibromyalgia, I was diagnosed this year and I have felt a difference in pain levels since the heat of summer went, my life would be a lot better when I reach retirement if I can live in a warmer year round climate.

Brexit now means that countries such as Spain want a retired couple to have at least 30k of pension money coming in a year - do you think many people have got that?

The minimum passive/pension income for a couple retiring to Portugal on a D7 visa is currently €16,560 per year or roughly £14,000 (joint income). Presumably one of the reasons why Portugal is increasing popular with Brits.

They can't claim benefits

Yes, they can - EU citizens with jobs/self-employed/involuntarily unemployed had similar access to benefits as UK citizens. New 'jobseekers' were more restricted.

Quoted from your post;

You receive the same working conditions, pay, social security, and tax advantages as local nationals.

You only get 3 months unless you can support yourself or have a job

'Jobseekers' get at least 6 months under EU law since there is no requirement to look for work in the first 3 months.

As for being deported if you fail to find work;

'You may live in the other EU country as long as you continue to meet the conditions for residence. If you no longer do so, the national authorities may require you to leave.'

'In exceptional cases, your host country can deport you on grounds of public policy or public security - but only if it can prove you represent a genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat affecting one of the fundamental interests of society.'

David Cameron's renegotiation focused on restricting benefits for EU migrants (among other things). Which was rejected by the EU.
