Christa Pike -where does she stand legally?

Just this really. Christ a is obviously being giving life saving treatment at hospital but where does she now stand legally. I suppose she probably has irreversible brain damage so will this not allow a second execution to take place? Is this a cruel and unusual punishment?

It’s pretty effective in preventing parole boards from releasing dangerous prisoners back onto the streets to kill again. Surely that’s in the public interest ?

This is true, @Rosscameasdoody, but it could equally be ensured by not releasing so many offenders, or even - as in some US states - scrapping parole completely

I realise that's unlikely to happen in the UK, where 700 have just been released with likely very minimal supervision, but it could if the will was there

Yeah. You tell yourself that.

I don't need to 'tell myself' what I find amusing and what I don't, thank you. I think my responses to the subject, and my responses to the typo, are reflective enough of that too.

Well that's not up to anyone to decided apart from Colleen's Mum obviously.

It’s not subjective.

Dignitas are not executing people, they are not strapped to a trolley and killed by fuck knows who while still conscious. Its done by qualified doctors, including anaesthetists, and its a process rather than an act.

Dignitas only ever does assisted suicide, which means the patient themselves administers the dose. They just don't do euthanasia (where someone else administers it). So if you wish to go the Dignitas route, you have to go before you lose the bodily ability to administer the dose yourself.

What I want to know is how come they can do assisted dying in Canada where presumably people just die immediately.....but they cant seem to instantly kill.people in these US jails. So do assisted deaths go horribly wrong and we just dont get told about it, or are US jails using one sort of chemical when they should be using something else. And if they are using the wrong chemicals to kill, is it because they are deliberately wanting to torture the inmates before they die and are thetefore doing it knowingly.

Waitingfordoggo · 01/10/2026 17:09

@Daygloboo I think it’s because many pharmaceutical companies will not provide the required drugs for executions, for ethical reasons. I don’t know if the drugs used for euthanasia are the same drugs (my understanding and knowledge of chemistry is extremely poor). But even if they were exactly the same drugs, I can see how a pharma company would justify supplying them for euthanasia but not for execution.

Waitingfordoggo · 01/10/2026 17:11

So to add- because US prisons can’t get the drugs they need from pharma companies, they use unregulated compounding pharmacies, whose products are clearly not always up to the task.

It's the same mechanics as when you "ban" drugs. The market just floods with unregulated substances with zero liability or quality control.

The state should be utterly ashamed. She should be released now.

Please tell me you’re joking? Have you actually taken the time to read what she did the poor girl that she murdered.

No way would you be saying that if she’d done that to one of your relatives.

angstinabaggyjumper · 01/10/2026 17:22

Will Christa get millions of dollars in compensation now? Of course she may not be in a state to enjoy it. The whole situation stinks of ineptitude and inhumanity.

NCOneDayOnly · 01/10/2026 17:24

Personally, I think what's happened makes me even more glad the death penalty doesn't apply in the UK. Regardless of Christa Pike's crime, she does not 'deserve' what's happened to her.

The incompetence and, possibly, criminality of the state who are absolutely complicit, is astounding. I can truly say I would not wish this appalling drawn-out circus on anyone - least of all the relatives of Colleen Slemmer.

There's a niggling thought in the back of my mind that, potentially, what's happened was deliberate - I wouldn't put anything past the warped machinations of the US penal system.

Snugglemonkey · 01/10/2026 17:25

PolkaDotPorridge · 01/10/2026 07:00

Not equally. She’s where she is because she killed a girl. I will save my sympathy for the victims family.

Civilised people can have empathy for both.

Well it all sounds a bit odd to me. I find it hard to believe that something as big and powerful as the US cant get its hands on the right kind of drugs and divert them to the state jails. I dont see how the pharma companies could have control over how they are used once they are bought. And if that is the case, then how come the makers of the drug they DO use arent complaing too. It all sounds like it is full of holes.

I think they're going to try again.... to execute her.... DH just read it somewhere.

(Local newspaper.)

Not 100% certain, as it may be fake news, but I think they are going to go for a third attempt.

While she’s in hospital receiving life saving treatment? Or wait for her to recover and then kill her?

Well because it’s political. The suppliers of the drugs they need are mostly based in Europe, and Europe is overwhelmingly anti-death penalty for the most part. I don’t think pharmaceutical companies should be forced to provide products for an act they do not believe is ethical.

The companies where the drugs are obtained are based in the US, so they’re happy to provide them. They’re just not very good at making them

It’s not improbable, if she recovers enough to not be considered incapacitated.

That’s a big if. She was potentially without enough oxygen for nearly an hour, and had a lethal amounts of pentobarbital in her system. She may be brain dead. If she survives, she could have significant brain damage and also be dealing with multiple organ failure. She could be left in a vegetative state.

That there has been no official update as to her medical condition, not even to her lawyers, suggests the outlook isn’t promising imo.

Maybe they could inject her with bleach and say she had COVID ?

Been a few news artciles on it over the last few years in media.

Many drugs are made outside US and as US is so out of step with rest of world many have import bans on drugs often used - EU and UK do.

Big pharm companies in USA - do not want the bad pr and may have their own ethical issues.

Supply changes are less transpart as a result - they often go through third party companies who are covered by state secracy laws because they do fear groups with different views attacking them - it's a very poloarised poltical country.

Executions in Tennessee have been paused pending an investigation into what went wrong, so I don't think this is accurate.

I bet her first victim would have swapped the actual torture she went through at Pike's hands for "a burning sensation in her legs". She didn't just "kill" a young women, she murdered her in a particularly cruel and protracted assault.

As I've said above, I don't agree with the death penalty but the efforts to minimise and excuse Pike's crimes are sickening.

Absolutely right. 👏

Of course it's fake news!

She's most likely in a coma in ITU on life-support - do you really think for one minute that she could be transferred back to the execution suite at the prison in that condition?

Let alone repeating the execution with press and family watching?
