Christa Pike -where does she stand legally?

Just this really. Christ a is obviously being giving life saving treatment at hospital but where does she now stand legally. I suppose she probably has irreversible brain damage so will this not allow a second execution to take place? Is this a cruel and unusual punishment?

who on earth do people watch?
family and friends, from behind a curtain?

I dont think she has any rights, if she recovers the state will try to carry out the sentence, unless the courts stop it, I recall reading about a 14 yr old boy being executed and he was innocent, and another case of a man, who also was innocent, with learning disabilities, he was essentially a child, he didn't know he was going to be killed, he thought it was a game, we to his execution playing with a wooden train, there are people in the US, in authority, that are savages.

Well because it’s political. The suppliers of the drugs they need are mostly based in Europe, and Europe is overwhelmingly anti-death penalty for the most part. I don’t think pharmaceutical companies should be forced to provide products for an act they do not believe is ethical.

The companies where the drugs are obtained are based in the US, so they’re happy to provide them. They’re just not very good at making them

Oh ok. I didnt.know that and I agree. It sounds ridiculous though, doesnt it. The US can put a man on the moon, but thry cant manufacture a drug that can kill someone humanely. Hmmmmmm.

Welcome to Mumsnet. There are lots of savages here, and MNHQ happily provide them with a safe space to express their savagery.

MNHQ's approach to moderation is rather idiosyncratic.

ScoldsBridle · 01/10/2026 19:07

The irony is that the fact the lethal injection was botched will elicit more profound debate about the death penalty than if she had just died like she was supposed to. Although Tennessee will probably just campaign for the return of the Electric Chair or Hanging as it’s more ‘efficient’. Grim all round.

Been a few news artciles on it over the last few years in media.

Many drugs are made outside US and as US is so out of step with rest of world many have import bans on drugs often used - EU and UK do.

Big pharm companies in USA - do not want the bad pr and may have their own ethical issues.

Supply changes are less transpart as a result - they often go through third party companies who are covered by state secracy laws because they do fear groups with different views attacking them - it's a very poloarised poltical country.

Yes. Indeed. You use the word ' polarised'. I'd use the word 'shit'.

God god there are bleeding hearts on here. It wouldn’t be the same if it was your 19 year old relative she’d tortured and murdered I bet.

Tennessee already have this option, though as mentioned earlier it's only available to those convicted before 1999

As you suggest though, once they "un-pause" executions again I can quite see them expanding it ... after all nobody's going to stop supplying them with electrical power

Relatives or parents should not be allowed to frame laws, otherwise we would probably have castration for rapists.
No one is arguing she should be released. Being against the death penalty is not being a bleeding heart.

Probably right away. I don't think she will recover. She is very badly injured (brain damage.)

Right away? As in prison staff are going to go into the hospital where she is being treated and attempt to inject her while she is there? They'll just tell the clinical staff to step aside? Doesn't that seem rather unlikely to you?

SylvanMoon · 01/10/2026 19:39

And the proponents of assisted suicide say that deaths by lethal injections will be "painless" and avoid the trauma a natural death may incur....

Rosscameasdoody · 01/10/2026 19:42

Waitingfordoggo · 01/10/2026 17:11

So to add- because US prisons can’t get the drugs they need from pharma companies, they use unregulated compounding pharmacies, whose products are clearly not always up to the task.

Yes. The drugs provided by compounding pharmacies aren’t subject to the same testing and review as mass produced so the drugs are of varying strengths and have a short shelf life. The identities of the suppliers used is shrouded in secrecy for obvious reasons.

If she has brain damage affecting mental capacity l doubt there will be an execution any time soon. Whether there should be one at all will likely be decided by the courts.

You don’t think rapists should be castrated?

My daughter was raped when she was 15. Do I think her 16-year-old rapist should have been castrated? No, absolutely not. If you'd put me in a room with him at the time, I would have quite happily castrated him with my bare hands, which is precisely why justice should not be left to the victim's family.

Now I have had time to process; I still cannot promise I wouldn't severely harm the perpetrator if I were left unsupervised with him.

With the benefit of physical distance from him, what I would have liked to happen to him was an intensive mental health assessment by a qualified professional, removal from his rape-apologist, victim-blaming poor excuse for a mother, and comprehensive mental health treatment.

There is something very, deeply wrong with a 16-year-old who can rape his friend and classmate, and causing physical harm to him will not resolve that nor would it make him any less dangerous to women who are unfortunate enough to come across him in the future.

Wasnt it a DR that gave her the injection?

Medics. don’t take part in executions. It’s against the hippocratic oath.

Its may not even come to that. Ross
Obviously I'm not in a position to know, but if she's as badly damaged as some suggest they'll probably discontinue life support anyway

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/10/2026 20:05

Obviously what she did was dreadful
and deserves a life sentence. I read an article (but can't find it now) where they said that today she wouldn't be given the death sentence due to her background, whereas it was deemed unrelated in the original trial.
She was someone let down by those that should love her, the community and the state. It's heartbreaking for all concerned and whilst, yes, she deserved punishment, a death sentence and 30 years solitary for someone who survived abuse, rape, physical violence and no parental care makes a tragic life.

Soulhorse · 01/10/2026 20:11

One of the drugs they used to use is midazolam. Very useful sedative and anticonvulsant but lethal in large doses. The manufacturers refused to sell it to the US for that purpose.
If you’ve ever had a camera ‘up ’ or ‘down’ under IV sedation you’ve probably had midazolam.

They do. Dr Mark Fowler oversaw this one, and the last one Tennessee botched too.

Usually the identities of the medics involved in executions remain private in order to prevent censure from the AMA.

The official position of the AMA is that medics must take no active part in executions, but in practice they do.

HaileyBailey · 01/10/2026 20:40

ZenNudist · 01/10/2026 07:35

Why keep her alive for 30 years? Why not keep going once you start execution? It shows what the US thinks about older women. Won't kill her when younger but once she's 50...

I don't see why 30 year delay and I don't support the death penalty but I think halting half way through inhumane. Even more inhumane.

There is a limit to how many times they can inject a person and they had reached that limit so they had to stop but she was asleep and snoring.
