FIFA’s controversial Peace Prize could be scrapped at the end of the year — only 12 months after U.S. President Donald Trump received the inaugural award.
At a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich on Thursday, it was decided that the governing body’s football social responsibility committee will now be tasked with assessing the merits of what was supposed to be an annual prize.
President Trump was awarded the Peace Prize by Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president, ahead of the men’s 2026 World Cup draw in Washington in December 2025, though it was not signed off on by the FIFA Council, the organisation’s decision-making body.
But now a 22-person committee, which includes Javier Zanetti, the former Inter and Argentina defender, who sits as the deputy chairperson, will determine whether the award should continue and, if so, in what guise.
As part of that assessment, the committee could decide it will no longer be handed out to politicians. Alternatively, they may determine it should be scrapped.
It is important to note, however, that the Peace Prize was not killed off in the room on Thursday, though questions were raised about it.
The football social responsibility committee is expected to report back in time for the next FIFA Council meeting, which will take place in December in Doha...
