Fairford latest: Counter terror police investigating if Iran is linked to RAF base bomb plot, Sky News understands | UK News | Sky News https://share.google/cU4wjxGZBYQtIb3sx

I couldn't find a thread on this breaking news. How awful for everyone involved.

No, it doesn’t. The link - including the bit you quoted - is clear on classes of people who are nationals.
Edit: the list of ways to be a national on there is exhaustive. If you aren’t in one of those groups you aren’t a British national.

Edited

The continued desperation to link this to foreigners at all costs is quite something to behold after the wind was taken out of their sails by the Police announcement.

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 28/09/2026 14:51

Can someone explain what a British national is, legally, please. The government guidance linked to above www.gov.uk/types-of-british-nationality only defines British National (overseas) rather than British National and that definition doesn't look to apply here "British national (overseas)
Someone who was a British overseas territories citizen (previously British dependent territories citizen) by connection with Hong Kong was able to register as a British national (overseas) before 1 July 1997.
British overseas territories citizens from Hong Kong who did not register as British nationals (overseas) and had no other nationality or citizenship on 30 June 1997 became British overseas citizens on 1 July 1997."
So who is a British National and does it apply to someone who came here as an asylum seeker or illegally but has been given leave to remain?

I think as an example the Southport killer was one

cardibach · 28/09/2026 15:00

5MinuteArgument · 28/09/2026 14:16

Totally. This is like a country building its own funeral pyre. The gaslighting that we should create fast track routes for Afghans and Palestinians is off the scale.

Women from Afghanistan. I thought that’s what people objecting to the boats wanted to prioritise?

Edit: I mean, of course, objecting to the boats on the grounds they contain mostly men. I also object to the boats, but because I don’t want anyone to have to take such risks and I don’t like exploitative criminals benefitting. This sort of safe route is also what I want.

I agree. Ridiculous when other countries are starting to deport Afghans. Germany has been deporting Afghan convicted criminals and anyone considered a security threat back to Afghanistan, and are now expanding that to rejected asylum seekers. Why isn’t the UK government doing that?

LuckyHazelFox · 28/09/2026 15:02

inamarina · 28/09/2026 14:44

I’ve already seen people predictably suggesting it was Mossad (not on here though).

Seriously! Might have known Israel was to blame.

He was born here. Pretty sure he was a citizen as a result, but I couldn’t swear to it. Citizenship is one of the grounds the link details as making someone a‘British national’.
It isn’t asylum seekers or those with leave to remain.

Made more embarrassing where the obsession with Trump is accompanied by childish orange nicknames.

Trump for his faults ( and he has many )
tends to carry out what he says he will do
it that’s bombing Iran , getting rid of illegal immigrants or kidnapping the President of Venezuela 😂

pretty much everything he said he was going to do - he’s has carried it through

EasternStandard · 28/09/2026 15:05

Ihateboris · 28/09/2026 14:54

What will it take to say "enough is enough "? I'm starting to wonder if there is some sort of financial benefit to the government or else Why, just why are they still allowed to keep coming here.

I guess the gov still has a sizeable amount defending them on this. Whether it’ll last I suppose we’ll see.

Like reducing the price of eggs and fuel you mean?

There’s two points of nonsense here:

  • this government has reduced both immigration and boat crossings
  • how could you rely on people for votes who won’t be citizens by 2029. Citizenship takes a minimum of 6 years on top of the time taken to process asylum.

In the last 6 days 1655 migrants have crossed the channel. Remind me how much we're paying France?

Vanillaicelatte · 28/09/2026 15:07

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 28/09/2026 13:09

I hope they only have safe routes for Afghan women and girls. All the ME countries who have given refuge to Palestinians have had major problems with terrorism, destabilising of governments etc, which is why they don't do it anymore.

Edited

Depends on if they are able to bring over the rest of their family

if that’s the case then no we shouldn’t be taking any of them in

Dunno about that
did he say he was going to do that as well 😂

Same, I am totally terrified!
It is getting worse now they’ve announced today bringing people from two of the most dangerous countries on earth who detest us.
😟
They will bring their extended families and the rest under their human rights argument. Labour must go they aren’t looking after us they are doing the exact opposite to gain votes,
anyone sane would end the madness !

Completely agree. The people our Home Secretary is encouraging are the same types that have murdered and harassed our most peaceful citizens (those of Jewish ancestry). I expect we will have yet more anti semitism and terrorist attacks... all encouraged by Hamas's useful idiots.

I was looking for a thread on this news story, I hope it doesn’t descend into a small boats rant by the Farage fan club.

It did. Counter terror police have now confirmed that five UK nationals have been arrested.

He hasn’t invaded Greenland.

Just hand the suspects over to Trump. Let them face US justice.

He said he wasn't going to get involved in unwinnable wars in the middle East. He has done exactly that. So sometimes he does things he says he isn't going to do.

Alantraitor · 28/09/2026 15:16

inamarina · 28/09/2026 14:55

Another example I can think of is from a little while back, but pretty relevant today:

During his address to the UN General Assembly in 2018, Trump warned Germany of over-reliance on Russian gas. There is footage of members of the German delegation smirking and chuckling in response to his remarks.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany’s heavy dependence on Russian energy triggered a severe national security and economic crisis.

Another example is when he said he likes Mc Donalds.

Boy did that turn out to be the truth.

Alantraitor · 28/09/2026 15:20

Think the sensible amongst us can agree that sometimes Trump lies and sometimes he tells the truth and hopefully we can move on.

Sorry not sure how that relates to my post. Are you arguing either of the points I made aren't true?

Zebedee999 · 28/09/2026 15:10

Yes they have, and their manifesto was also 'fully costed'. They have 'ended the chaos' and definitely haven't raised taxes.

Zebedee999 · 28/09/2026 15:10

I don’t think they claim that. Just that doing so would stop the crossings. Again, are either of the points I made untrue?

I can remind you that it’s 42% less than this time last year. Does that help?
