Is 8st too little for someone around 5ft 2?

Settle a debate. Do you think 8st is too little when you are 5ft 2ish? Size 8 clothing are perfect or a little loose. Age 41. Two kids. I know there’s no rules,it’s not me saying that there is but I need to hear opinions on this.

I’m sure it’s fine, but I’ll never understand the obsession with scale weight on MN. Surely it’s more about body composition—I would want to have a decent amount of muscle for shape and so I’m not frail as I get older, and enough fat to be healthy but not so much that I’m too squishy. Who cares how much that weighs?

If you have a health condition, I can tell you that everyone wants to know. On the last 2 weeks my weight and height has been taken and recorded by two departments in the NHS and they regularly send me messages asking me to update my stats.

I do agree with you though, I am 5,3
and 8st 5lb but have exercised all my life, weights several times a week and cardio, and I don’t weigh myself at home but use a tape measure and go by how my clothes fit.

BMI isn't a good judge. A healthy weight for individuals will differ vastly depending on whether one's skeletal frame is akin to a whippet or a bulldog.

I never mentioned BMI.

TheCabbageMerchant · 26/09/2026 17:41

I’m 5ft 1 and 8st 4ish on a good day, and I still have a huge layer of flab. Currently trying to get down lower. BMI is considered healthy but tell that to my spare tyres. NHS says down to 7.5 stone is healthy for this height.

My cardiologist does not care about body composition.

My cardiologist does not care about body composition.

That’s very very unusual, cardiologists are normally the ones who care the most because fat or muscle can hugely impact heart health. If someone is very over or under weight that would be their primary concern, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a cardiologist who doesn’t care about body composition

Boomer55 · 26/09/2026 17:50

I’m 5’3” and 8.5 stones. 8-10. BMI ok. Boomer. All good.👍

allthesaints · 26/09/2026 18:03

Depends on your build really! I’m 5:1 and at 10 stone, I’m in a size 12 which feels comfortable to me.

namechange0998776554799000 · 26/09/2026 18:07

I'm assuming you're on WLIs and someone disapproves of your target weight. I'm 5ft 2, target weight 8-9 stone and my family are horrified. I was over 19 stone a year ago so they just can't get their heads around it and think I'll look skeletal at that weight.

Crunchymum · 26/09/2026 18:09

I'm 5ft 1in and 8st. Still have a tummy and wobbly bits. Size 8/10 (or small).

I do feel quite "little" but that's more down to my kids (11 and 13) / their mates suddenly all being taller than me. It's a very odd sensation... that's another thread though.

I am certainly not underweight or too thin though.

Chipsahoy · 26/09/2026 18:12

I’m just shy of 8stone. I’m 5ft 4 and been the same weight for decades. Size 8 fits me perfectly but I can wear a 6 sometimes. I have a very small frame so just assume this is my natural weight?

joanofaardvark · 26/09/2026 18:13

I’m 5’3. When I was 8st I maintained it by never eating more than one meal a day, it wasn’t a healthy. However, everyone is different. If you’re active & getting all your nutrients it’s fine.

CatherinedeBourgh · 26/09/2026 18:16

I'm a bit taller than that and was between 8 and 8.5 stone most of my adult life until menopause. I didn't have to do anything, it was just my natural weight. I was 8 stone when unfit, 8.5 when I managed to put on a bit of muscle.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 26/09/2026 18:50

For me that’s a good weight to be. I’m the same height and when I was under 8 stone my face looked a bit gaunt and I lost most of my boobs and bum but still had a bit of a tummy as that’s just my shape. I’m 40 with kids, I think when I was younger my face was more padded so I looked better. Currently just over 8 and a half and my boobs suddenly look massive and my bum is back but my size 8 jeans feel a bit too tight. My personal sweet spot is between 8 stone and 8 stone 5 pounds at this height and age.

Covidwoes · 26/09/2026 18:56

No that’s healthy! I’m 5’4 and just over 8st.

UniquePinkSwan · 26/09/2026 19:03

I’m exactly that I’m not too small. I’m gaining muscle actually

Same.

to maintain 8st I was eating less than 800 cals a day and doing a lot of exercise- I was a teenage dancer, 5 classes a week.

in the mirror I still thought I was too big.

i don’t think you can compare. These threads always have people with “I feel huge at that weight” but the reality is what’s healthy looks different between two people the same height and weight.

8st may be too little for the o/p, despite what anyone here thinks.

Butterscotchdelight · 26/09/2026 19:16

Gosh, there are some skinny minnies on this thread! 8 stone at 5 ft 3 feeling 'huge' 😮 I'm 5 ft 3 and just under 10 stone and wear size 8-10 clothes. I'm considered a healthy size and weight, but I would rather be around 9 stone. I'd look really slim at 9 stone and I do prefer how clothes hang when I'm that size. But health is most important especially as we age, so I'm not prepared to do restricted eating or extreme diets. I am trying to reduce my fat and sugar intake. It's sad though, I know so many women who appear to be on a constant diet and never treat themselves.

LondonLass2026 · 26/09/2026 19:19

No. I'm 5'3" and just over 8 stone since my weight loss. It's fine.

Hedgehoggin · 26/09/2026 19:28

ToadRage · 26/09/2026 14:52

No, it's at the lower end of a healthy weight range for your height. I am also 5'2 and when i was doing Slimming World we had to set a target that was in the healthy range for our heights. I was heading for 9st with a lower of 8.5 if I carried on losing.

How did you find weightwatchers? I don’t want to go on GLP-1s but I really need to get down to a healthy weight.

Nope, they go on weight/BMI as the majority of the NHS does.

(context: I have an ascending aortic aneurysm, so I see them regularly and nobody has asked that once - in fact, it’s actually mostly advised against. I can’t lift heavier than 10kg and nothing that makes me red in the face…)

BobbleBear · 26/09/2026 19:30

It depends on her overall frame. Does she have tiny hands and feet?

When I was 8.5 stones I was anorexic looking with sticky out bones even though I’m also short, but with big hands and size 7.5 feet. I look much healthier at 9.5 stones.

However, my best friend from school (same height) looked perfectly healthy at 7.5 stones but she had very tiny hands and size 3 feet.

avocadotofu · 26/09/2026 19:31

No absolutely not!

Pinklightning · 26/09/2026 19:34

No. I’m 5’3” and 8st 4lb and have plenty of lard I’d like to lose. I’m a size 10. Taller people just find it weird that shorter people weigh less in comparison in my experience.

WhereAreWeNow · 26/09/2026 19:34

Sounds fine to me but depends on the individual and her frame.

cartagenagina · 26/09/2026 19:36

No. I weigh eight stone exactly and am five ft 4.

I wear size 8 bottoms, size ten tops.
