Is 8st too little for someone around 5ft 2?

Settle a debate. Do you think 8st is too little when you are 5ft 2ish? Size 8 clothing are perfect or a little loose. Age 41. Two kids. I know there’s no rules,it’s not me saying that there is but I need to hear opinions on this.

No, it's at the lower end of a healthy weight range for your height. I am also 5'2 and when i was doing Slimming World we had to set a target that was in the healthy range for our heights. I was heading for 9st with a lower of 8.5 if I carried on losing.

BMI isn't a good judge. A healthy weight for individuals will differ vastly depending on whether one's skeletal frame is akin to a whippet or a bulldog.

Minasama · 26/09/2026 15:07

No of course not. I’m 5.4 and was 8 st 2 for most of my adult life (fatter now at 9 st 5 though as I’ve given up being so strict with myself 😀)

But the question is, do you look skinny? Do you have stick-like bony legs, a pronounced ribcage, a gaunt face? Pretty sure you don’t at that weight, so you’re fine.

Peoplw have become much larger over the past 20 years, meaning our norm has been skewed. However additional weight raises your risk of cancer considerably, so don’t feel pressured to put more on.

I think it really does depend on build as I’ve never really looked thin, even back was I was 8 stone (in my 20s, and later when breastfeeding). I’ve got broad shoulders for a short person and have always had quite broad upper arms (sometimes with more muscle definition than I have now!)

Yeah I agree. I have a really narrow waist and shoulders, but big boobs and carry weight on my stomach. So those narrow parts can make me look slim

I am not slight either, i have broad shoulders too and "sturdy" thighs , some people assume that shorter women are tiny in build where it isn't always the case.

SnappyPenguin · 26/09/2026 15:12

No. Im 5 ft 2 and weighed 6 stone 0 lb at one point, doctors told me if I got to 7 stone 3 lb then I would be a healthy weight. 8 stone is hardly starving awaym

PrettyLittleRose · 26/09/2026 15:15

It's OK. Don't lose any more weight though.

Also, if someone is 9 st 2 at that height, that is OK too.

Even 10 st 2 is all right. Maybe a little higher than recommended for that height, but it largely depends on your build/frame/muscle mass etc...

At 10 st 3 to 10 st 6, I am perfectly OK, and I am 5 ft 3 and a half, so 10 st 2 at 5 ft 2 is perfectly fine.

This is Mumsnet though, so some will regard 8 st 2 as 'a bit much' if you're 5 ft 2. 🙄

WigglyPinkFlamingo · 26/09/2026 15:16

No. I’m 7st and wouldn’t like to be 8st. I’d feel huge.

ifonly4 · 26/09/2026 15:20

I think it depends on how that person looks. If you can see bones on their ribs/back, their legs and arms are stick thin, then it wouldn't be a good luck. Are they eating regularly and healthily, but at the same time not worrying if they fancy a cake with coffee out, a glass of wine.

This comes from someone who is 5'3" and weighs less than that - I'm just at my natural weight as I've always been this weight. You can't see my ribs, tummy is a bit wobbly and when I'm exercising I can see I've got a little more around my bum than most, but I'm at that age where I'm more relaxed out I look - 59.

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/09/2026 15:31

Well it sounds alright but it is not so much your overall weight that matters but your body composition. It is perfectly possible, for example,
to have a healthy overall weight but too much fat and too little muscle. I have a friend who I suspect falls into this category. It does not look good but more importantly her knees hurt all the time and I think she would be able to stop this by strengthening the muscles around her knees.

BugOnARugDrinkingTeaFromAMug · 26/09/2026 16:08

I am the same height and weight and feel fine. Anything from 7.7 to 8.5 is ok for me.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 26/09/2026 16:10

I’m 5ft 1 and 8 stone 4 and would like to be 8 stone. I’ve still got big boobs and a belly. Are you happy with your weight or do you feel it’s too heavy/light?

Ikeameatballs · 26/09/2026 16:15

It’s fine. I’m that weight but a little bit taller, I’m perfectly healthy.

RandomMess · 26/09/2026 16:16

It’s a healthy weight

NoHotGirlsInHell · 26/09/2026 16:17

No. I’m 5’4 and 8st and have plenty of fat!

opaldark · 26/09/2026 16:21

Not at all, 5ft 2 is short, I’m 5ft5 and I weigh 8stone 11, that’s the same BMI apparently (20.5, so comfortably within healthy), I don’t look too little. Size 8 is a perfectly healthy clothes size.

Iliketulips · 26/09/2026 16:35

As long as that person isn't stick thin, eats healthy and regularly. Also, as said before, they need to think about muscles for strength, and body support as they get older.

I'm 5'3" and actually 7st7lbs. My friends say I'm slim but don't think I'm skinny. I eat 3 meals a day, as well as 2/3 snacks.

Which side of the debate are you, OP? Is the person currently healthy, regularly eats and exercises?

Twoweeksinaugust · 26/09/2026 16:54

That's a healthy BMI. I think we've lost sight a bot about what a good BMI looks like!

Venusunbroken · 26/09/2026 16:58

I don’t understand why there is a debate on it , is it your body or someone else’s? No one should be debating any one else’s body, especially not a healthy weight one. I can’t even imagine anyone debating my body and weight, I’d be furious, if I was under or over weight, fair enough if they were worried, but past that body weight is no one’s business,

LaurieFairyCake · 26/09/2026 16:59

Definitely not too light. I’m a bit shorter than you OP and I weigh 7st 7 but my bmi is still 21. Bang in the middle of the healthy weight range.

dollyblue01 · 26/09/2026 17:01

Sounds fine to me I’m 5’2 and just over 9 stone , I used to be 8 prior to hitting peri and it was ok , but I look better at say 8 and a half to nine as it gives me a few nice curves.

bittertwisted · 26/09/2026 17:03

No
im 5’2 and currently about 7s 4 due to life being shit and I can’t eat when I’m sad

8 stone I would say is my perfect weight, at my current weight my face looks awful

Peclet · 26/09/2026 17:10

I’m 5’3 and am higher just under 8.5. Seems good to me.

ButtCheeks · 26/09/2026 17:10

I’m sure it’s fine, but I’ll never understand the obsession with scale weight on MN. Surely it’s more about body composition—I would want to have a decent amount of muscle for shape and so I’m not frail as I get older, and enough fat to be healthy but not so much that I’m too squishy. Who cares how much that weighs?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/09/2026 17:14

I'd be interested to hear the other side of the debate. Is someone claiming they are under weight, or trying to pretend they are fat? Or is someone telling the 8stone person that there is something wrong with them. There is only one person who gets to decide if it's 'too' anything and that's the person whose body it is.
