What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

The free gift from the cereal box, we squabbled vehemently over these every time!

I got a small green plastic diver. If you put baking powder in it, it would zoom through your bath.

I miss those simple times!

I had a red one of those!

I was allowed to help iron, this was the tea towels and pillowcases.
I used to ask to crumble the Oxo cubes.
I had school lunches but if we had a school trip we took a packed lunch and I was able to choose a couple of special items, I remember selecting a twin pack of Mr Kipling fruit pies once. Core memories.

Wow, every single one of these was my childhood too - cleaning the brass was a top treat, although the model spitfire had awkward bits that I never quite got. Thank you, reading that made me so happy 😊

It’s a lovely thread isn’t it x

If we'd ran out of cereal for breakfast, my dad gave us cubed white bread in hot milk sprinkled with sugar. We thought it was a huge treat.

A topic and a packet of crisps on a Friday night.

We had Friday sweets. 10p for each of us (1970) bought a packet of Polos (2p) and Mojos and other chewy sweets for 1/2 p each. You bought them individually rather than in a big bag like now.

AngelinaFibres · 30/09/2026 08:04

A bag of crisps with school packed lunch.Usually just sandwiches and an apple so crisps were a real treat.

Going to the library.
Getting something from a vending machine after swimming.
Going to the shop to choose a comic.
Little Chef!
Reading the Argos catalogue.

AInightingale · 30/09/2026 13:09

My mother had a 'Freemans' catalogue and was an agent. Seemed very exciting when this huge thing arrived at the door, the new summer and winter editions! Especially the winter one which had pages and pages of toys. The stuff used to come in huge navy-blue plastic sacks and there was lots of running to the Post Office to return clothes that didn't suit...

bababamama · 30/09/2026 13:20

Eating out which was a very rare treat. Usually the Bernie inn on my grandmothers birthday or perhaps the little chef or happy eater in the summer on a day trip. McDonald’s too was a huge treat again in school holidays as we had one of the first in the country, before happy meals so we would share a small bag of chips between 3 of us plus a small burger each, it’s why kids were slimmer!

Anyone remember the 80s TV ad for Angel Delight - it had skinny women in bikinis around a pool and because it was so 'deliciously light' their glasses of the stuff floated up in the air?

This led to my friend getting covered in Angel Delight as he held his glass up in the air and let go, with predictable results (we were about 5).

Ah those days when ads could blatantly lie 😆

Wow didn't know Ice Magic was still being sold.

I searched for it for years and I’m sure they don’t make it anymore. You can get choc sauce that goes hard but it’s in a disappointingly non-volcanic shaped bottle!

Oh I loved angel delight. When my kids were little I used to put it into ice lolly moulds for creamy strawberry ice lollies 🙂

On a summers evening we would drive to near the airport and watch the planes sometimes. Huge treat!!

That and a Snowball at Christmas! 😂

That would be a treat for me now. I'm a bit of a plane enthusiast and wouldn't say no to a snowball. 😀

It's still sold here in Australia 😊

Me either, but if it's 'just a sad chocolate splodge' as a pp says I don't think I want it! The whole point was that you watched it set and then cracked it with a spoon.
I used to love the mint one.

You can make your own with melted chocolate and coconut oil 😊

Also, aged about 7, being sent to the shop to buy fags for the adults and being allowed to get a penny mix as an incentive

I did this for my dad 😂 and yes the change was for lollies

Violetdeparma · 03/10/2026 17:18

Heat ! And having a clear TV picture

AInightingale · 03/10/2026 17:31

We had to switch our TV on for about ten minutes before the picture appeared. Bit like an oven really. Did the valves have to heat up on old sets? This was a colour TV from the mid 70s, very likely second hand (TVs cost a FORTUNE until about the early 90s).

WHY IS NO ONE MENTIONING THE POSTER WHO LIKED CHOPPING LIVER?!

PuppyMonkey · 03/10/2026 17:36

When I was little, once a year, we all used to get in the car and do the big Christmas shop… at Asda. Grin

I don’t understand what’s funny about this! That’s still a treat! A Christmas shop is a Christmas shop! 😂

PuppyMonkey · 03/10/2026 19:01

@Missohnoyoubetterdont it just seems funny to me now that I got so excited going to Asda - I can’t stand the place these days! Grin
