What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

We lived near the Poppets factory in Waddon near Croydon. I used to feel so proud if we drove past it and got a waft of the lovely, chocolatey smell. It's a car showroom now 🙁

This was such a treat ☺️

I used to get 3 angel delights and make a stripey bowl for each of my 3 DDs.

Late 90s. They LOVED it! We were laughing about it together recently actually.

I love angel delight growing up....still a v naughty treat! How do you make it in stripes? 🤔

Licking out the baking bowl after cake making

I don't understand. How is this NOT a treat??

Chrissie1301 · 03/10/2026 22:49

The first strawberries of the year. Counted out religiously by mum so we all had the same. Then sugar and tinned cream on top

A packet of crisps - with the little blue twist of salt in it. Crisps were always a rarity.
A doughnut
A hot cross bun. When I was a child back in the Dark Ages, as far as I recall they were only available on Good Friday, and you had to go early to the bakery for them - fresh out of the oven.

I do like the modern supermarket ones but they really can’t hold a candle to those Proper HCBs.

Oh my word, that suddenly brought up a memory. Mum getting up at some ungodly hour on Good Friday, when we were kids, (I'm 66 now) and bringing hot cross buns back, as if they were treasure, with a huge smile on her face.
And now I'm shedding a tear

MyWildOliveGoose · 04/10/2026 00:06

Porridge in the morning.

LBB2020 · 04/10/2026 00:19

Sara Lee chocolate gateaux and Vienetta at Christmas!

Sparkhaze · 04/10/2026 07:22

a tiny bowl of currants
beef dripping on bread
top of the milk on cereal

summersolsticesoon · 04/10/2026 08:24

An Apple chopped up and dipped in sugar .

Menopausalmoan · 04/10/2026 09:16

A “99” from the ice cream van
chips after swimming while dad had a proper swim
ice cream sliders
a treat at the weekend
buying all my family’s Christmas presents in the local newsagents haha - it was a massive treat to buy them a sharing bag of malteasers

Icecreammonster · 04/10/2026 09:19

Clothes 😝 especially when accompanied by a shoe fitting at Clarks

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/10/2026 09:21

One of the things I had in common with dh when we first met, was that when we were children, we only ever had orange squash and chocolate biscuits at other people’s houses - or at our own birthday parties.

Make the first packet and leave to set in the bowls. Then make the second and pour on top. When this has set make the third flavour and pour on top.

When a young relation visited us her 'treat' was watering our many patio pots and planters. She absolutely loved doing it and was very careful about not spilling any water or getting wet. It kept her occupied all afternoon and the adults could enjoy wine and a chat knowing she was having the time of her life.

Ds used to think cleaning the car was a treat.

"What would you like to do for your birthday?"
"PLEASE let me clean the car..."
"As a real sacrifice, I'll let you" 😁

Unfortunately once he was tall enough to do the roof as well, he lost interest.

This is still one of my favourite things to do

These are all lovely and heart warming. I loved my childhood and this has made me all nostalgic. Great thread @ClassicStripe x

Agree.

We had the chicken wishbone too. I married a vegetarian so we don't do this in our house now.

I miss stuff feeling like a treat. We had KFC or Chinese on Christmas eve and it was amazing.

Chestnuts once a hear at Salisbury Fair. This was also the only time if year we visited my grandparents home in the dark and it felt like such a late night and a treat!

Joloman74 · 04/10/2026 10:56

Christmas time we would get a few bottles of pop off the pop van! We didn't buy pop through the year so this really was special!

Tinyfrog200 · 23/09/2026 23:56

Strawberries
A cornetto from the van!
A chocolate bar
chicken soup from the vending machine, after swimming!

I was going to say chicken soup after swimming in the beige plastic cup lol. Especially walking to the car with it in the winter.

Quicknamechange2025 · 04/10/2026 11:22

Eating in the living room when my dad worked away.
My parents always cooked from scratch so ordering a Chinese takeaway for us to eat as a family once a year on a special occasion.

Ah, ok, thank you! That makes sense. My crazy brain was thinking the stripes were horizontal not vertical lol.

sueelleker · 04/10/2026 15:01

Er, they are horizontal!

A bowl of custard and digestive biscuits crushed up in it lol

That’s reminded me of having banana and custard for pudding. Tinned or, actually, probably packet powdered custard. I can still feel the sensation when you got a mouthful with hot custard and cold banana!💖

We have just hosted a priest from Nigeria at our church. During his last week someone offered to treat him and a few guests to a meal at a restaurant of his choice.

This 40 something year old man chose McDonalds on the basis he had heard of it all his life but never tried it. In fact, he had never eaten a beef burger.

I'm happy to say that his chosen meal of Big Mac, Fries and a milkshake was even better than he had imagined. He absolutely loved it.

i hope he comes back to us next year. I want to treat him to a Sausage McMuffin.

It's still sold here in Australia 😊

Game changer! I’m on sky scanner as we speak 😂
