What did you/your family consider a treat growing up that really wasn’t?

I’ve just randomly remembered that when I was younger me and my sister thought it was the most amazing treat to have our mum’s bath water after she was finished with it. She didn’t even use bubble bath so it was literally just lukewarm water but we absolutely loved it. This was in the early 90’s and we had regular hot warm bubble baths which makes it even stranger that we were so pleased by using mum’s old water!

…when my comic came through the letterbox😺. One year it coincided with my god-father's birthday so we had something special for tea. I remember telling everyone that it was the happiest day of my life.

Vienetta

I came here to say this

AInightingale · 26/09/2026 20:28

Was out with my son earlier this evening and he said, 'look, that kid's been left in a car on her own.' She was about 7 or 8, outside LIDL. Seems strange that it's something we comment on now, because there was barely a week when my father didn't leave us alone sitting in the car for some reason or other. I quite enjoyed it, though I do remember fiddling about with the handbrake. 😱

Ice Magic to put on top of ice cream. Cremola foam. Toast Toppers for supper.

Licking out the baking bowl after cake making

That is a genuine treat and one which I still enjoy every time my grown-up daughter bakes!

Evaporated milk on tinned fruit for dessert!

Didn't Nestlé (or, 'Nessles' as it was pronounced in the '70s), have a tin of some sort of cream? I remember being given the job of shaking said tin really vigorously until whatever was inside solidified, you could hear it clunk about and when opened it contained a semi-solid creamy substance. Not real cream, but passable in the days when fridges were rare. That was put on fruit as a treat, on Sunday teatime. Definitely not evaporated milk though, which we also had, as a treat.

Was that Nestle Carnation Thick Cream? Apparently, it was discontinued in the UK but you can still buy it from abroad...

They've completely ruined Ice Magic. When I was a kid (1980s) it was properly exciting that the chocolate became hard and would crack (with a noise!) but in recent years it is just a sad chocolate splodge that is pointless! Doesn't even look the same once it's set!

Being allowed to do the washing up instead of drying the dishes.

Cheese and onion crisps when on holiday in Ireland - think they might not have been available in UK at the time.

flipflopfan · 27/09/2026 09:08

Kellogg’s Variety Pack cereals. And Vienetta!

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 27/09/2026 09:20

playing with hose pipe
marmite toast in bed - only when poorly
off school as any other time no food or drink outside the kitchen in our house including water lol

Getting those 3D wildlife cards from the Shell petrol station when my mum filled up the car (if you are a child of the 70’s you will know what i mean😂)
being taken to a cafe for a drink and a cake by my mum when school broke up for half term or holidays. My parents were not poor by any stretch of the imagination but regular cafe trips/meals out were not the thing they are now. Once in a while we would go out out for dinner in a nice restaurant and that was a huge treat.
my paternal grandfather “magically” producing a mint from behind his ear😂
being “allowed” to tidy my maternal grandmother make up case (a huge leather vanity box) when ever she came to stay and getting to keep bits she was throwing away 😂

drspouse · 27/09/2026 09:32

The Shell cards! I loved those.

That’s totally a treat! I still do that now, I prefer cake mix to cakes! And because I’m a grown-up and get to make all the decisions, I leave a lot more mix in the bowl than my mum used to!

When I was a child I made a very solemn promise to myself that when I was grown up I would only eat the cake batter, not the cooked cake, which was boring and crumbly compared to the heavenly mix. When I make a cake now I can feel the young version of myself's disapproval 😊

smilyfairy · 27/09/2026 11:00

This has really got me reminiscing! Vienetta as many of you have said , I’m the eldest of five kids and every Friday my dad would walk us to the shop for a treat a chocolate bar or sweets . Any fizzy drink was a very rare birthday Christmas treat not my daily current coke Zero obsession. My mum used to get chicken legs and that was a super treat and I remember pasta in particular tinned ravioli being the ultimate treat. We had a twice yearly trip to the Berni steakhouse which we’d look forward to for weeks .

Bellini12 · 27/09/2026 11:17

Coke float. Or a fizzy drink with a blob of ice cream in it. Was the ultimate treat.

Don’t think I could stomach that now!

EloElo48 · 27/09/2026 11:29

Fry’s chocolate cream bars? Mint or orange flavour. They also made them with different flavours in one bar. I wasn’t keen on them because they were made with dark chocolate.

AInightingale · 27/09/2026 11:33

Oh, I'd love the Frys Five Centres to make a comeback!

Yes, we had that too! I’d forgotten about it!

Angel delight - strawberry or banana flavour.

VanillaImpulse · 27/09/2026 11:49

A trebor booty bag once a week with the food shop

Fizzy drinks from the milkman at Xmas

zingally · 27/09/2026 12:04

Fruit juice from a carton.

It would be ceremoniously placed on the table by my mum, and everyone would get 2-3 inches carefully poured out.
It would only ever get purchased when the grandparents visited, or it was Christmas dinner.
The same goes for a Vienetta.
Also, very occasionally, mum would make up a batch of chocolate angel delight, and it would be shared out into 4 bowls. Nowadays I could eat the whole thing by myself, which still feels terribly naughty and decadent.
