Massive holiday cock up !

We’re on a ferry on our way to a small Greek Island and I was checking the accommodation arrangements. I have just noticed I booked from 23-30 October not September 😮. The booking is for a week and not refundable. This is so unlike me but what a bloody idiot !

🤣 I know you are right but it just feels so irresponsible. Why ???

Is that not a massive benefit of being retired and part time self employed?! To allow you the freedom to make the odd “irresponsible” choice?!

TheDogsMother · 23/09/2026 16:23

Oh no what a disaster. Hope it didn’t ruin the holiday?

No not really. I was only staying 2 nights as I was heading to Austria. I also for got my phone charger and everything was in my phone. The hotel in Austria was really helpful and lent me one. Hopefully OPs people will be really helpful too!

‘Pleased this worked out. Chargers are one of the most frequently left behind items in hotels. If you are ever without one or one doesn’t work, always ask at reception. Many hotels keep a box of “orphan chargers” behind the reception desk.

Paxos is beautiful. If you like swimming try and make it over to Anti-Paxos ❤️

True. It’s quite difficult getting my head into that space but I must!

Oh no and Paxos is expensive!
But it's also super beautiful - make sure you visit antipaxos - it's just fabulous - hope you get sorted

Nooooo this is my biggest nightmare

If that's your worst nightmare, count your blessings. 🙂

I think people are missing the point slightly, OP doesn't care about finding a place to stay, OP cares that they have spent money and won't get it back.

OP also only booked 'non refundable' to save money. From this I deduce that OP is ok for money because OP is preoccupied with money, and saving money, and being refunded on things they have clearly deliberately booked as 'non-refundable'. I already feel a bit sorry for the owner of the accommodation tbh

Who pissed on your chips?

@TheDogsMother to err is human! Hope all goes well now!

I think that was a figure of speech! 🙄

And mine was a light-hearted comment.

Wow, was there any need for that? Meow! Claws out indeed.

Not abroad, but some 27 years ago my DH made a booking over the phone for a B & B in a town in Cumbria. We set off in the car with our infant DD and arrived in the evening. Couldn't find the B & B anywhere. We eventually realised that there was a town of the same name in Ayrshire in Scotland, and DH had booked a place there instead. 🤦 We were too far from home to go back so had to go round the town trying to find a bed for the night.

Luckily a guesthouse had a room, with an ancient wooden cot for DD which would have given some on here kittens, but we didn't have much choice. The place was clean, but the bed sheets were so old and patched together. My nan, who was born in 1909, so lived through two world wars and knew all about make do and mend, would have been ashamed of them! Plus the cooked breakfast was absolutely swimming in grease!

Still, we survived and still laugh about it now. 😅

Recently I booked a work social event for the wrong day. 😱

Fortunately the pub we went to were absolutely amazing and accommodated us one day early, and earned every penny of the substantial tip I left.

princessleah1 · 24/09/2026 11:22

We arrived days early for a family holiday in Lake District. "We're nearly there, see you soon"...."why are you nearly there?!" We had a pleasant unexpected couple of days in Morecombe.

Thank you for this thread, @TheDogsMother . When I booked my last holiday I felt nuts double- and triple-checking the dates. It turns out I was just being sensible, rather than the loon I thought I was 😹

I like the dividing it by how many years calculation too.

if it helps I managed to spend nearly 800 on a hot air balloon and tour that should have cost us half that. Through a series of cock Jo’s ended up double booking and can’t get the money back….

Oh no. Hope it was good though

Would you @TheDogsMother ?

As I said this is entirely my error, I expect nothing but I did go and meet the host to see if anything could be done as the booking is still a month away

OP posts:
TheDogsMother · 24/09/2026 11:35

A little update. Lovely first host has offered us €500 refund which, given the circumstances, is so nice of her. I’m pleased the circumstances also made us hire a car too as we can now explore the island which we are doing right now.

Thank you for all your great stories and not making me feel such a knob about the whole thing. Remember people, double and triple check ❤️

Not answering my question

in her shoes - would you refund if you owned a small hotel / holiday let?

That's terrific news OP, but aren't you tempted to stay on?

Depends on the circumstances really. If there is a good chance of re letting then probably yes. As I have said though I have no expectation of it as the error was mine.

Interesting you should ask though as we host an Airbnb annexe in our garden and have done so for about nine years as Superhosts. There have been a number of occasions that we have refunded depending on the situation. People are only human and life happens.

I seriously was but was offered the refund rather than the date change. We’re already here for three weeks so I guess we have to go home some time.
