Massive holiday cock up !

We’re on a ferry on our way to a small Greek Island and I was checking the accommodation arrangements. I have just noticed I booked from 23-30 October not September 😮. The booking is for a week and not refundable. This is so unlike me but what a bloody idiot !

Depends on the circumstances really. If there is a good chance of re letting then probably yes. As I have said though I have no expectation of it as the error was mine.

Interesting you should ask though as we host an Airbnb annexe in our garden and have done so for about nine years as Superhosts. There have been a number of occasions that we have refunded depending on the situation. People are only human and life happens.

Fact is the £760 you paid for an October stay will be substantially less than peak season September stay so you did very well to get 500 back as they will definitely be out of pocket

Not answering my question

in her shoes - would you refund if you owned a small hotel / holiday let?

Yes, l would, looking after customers is part of a successful business model. The OP may well tell her friends about a wonderful place to stay with nice people. It could bring further bookings.

not sure I’d recommend somewhere I had never actually stayed in

A little update. Lovely first host has offered us €500 refund which, given the circumstances, is so nice of her. I’m pleased the circumstances also made us hire a car too as we can now explore the island which we are doing right now.

Thank you for all your great stories and not making me feel such a knob about the whole thing. Remember people, double and triple check ❤️

Great news OP! There still will have been some admin costs to be paid so this is a very good outcome.

The weather and sea wouldn't have been as warm next month anyway, and possibly very wet too, as we are overdue a lot of rain!

Enjoy Παξοι!! and definitely head over to Antipaxos.

honeylulu · 24/09/2026 15:56

I think the October dates are half term though so it's probably closer(or as close) to a "peak week" than late September. Otherwise I would agree.

Not Greece in October

Canary Islands… yes
not Greece

Beyond Athens, European half term doesn't impact Greece. Greek schools don't have half term and October, weather wise, is very much off season with most resorts packed up and closed for the year.

Yes exactly

The £760 the Op paid that week in October likely >£1000 this week when peak season

Paxos is beautiful. If you like swimming try and make it over to Anti-Paxos ❤️

Have the ferries stopped running for the season? 😜

Fair point but I still think that is demonstrates they are a business with a heart and I would suggest them on that basis.

I'm just so pleased for the OP.

pilates · 24/09/2026 17:58

Lucky you op and glad your husband is so cool 😎. Mine would have been having palpitations 😂

I agree
but I’ll follow a recommendation from a friend who has actually stayed there over one who gave a part refund for a mess up

CAWL · 24/09/2026 18:13

Perhaps move the booking to next year? That way they get to keep the money and you get the accommodation? Obviously there may be a price difference?

MyCatIsAnAeroplane · 24/09/2026 18:16

Paxos was my second ever foreign holiday when I was about 9, in 1982. The first had been Denmark so not quite the same. It’s the childhood holiday I have the most and best memories of. We went because my mum (and me, as an avid reader) were big Gerald Durrell book fans and back then it was just like his childhood stories.

I hope it’s still got that charm and you have the loveliest time and escape from the world after the rather exciting start to the holiday!

Well done for navigating that that but wow it sounded v stressful.

I think the poster would also have had every right to have been highly stersssed at the visa process. We were at India House in Aldwych for the best part of day and it was a living hell! We did it though.

We don’t leave Greece until 13th October and DH was just calculating that it would only be another 9 days until the original mistaken October booking. I can work from anywhere and DH is retired. 😮

Stay!! ☺️

Switcher · 24/09/2026 18:43

Thank you for this thread. It has been so enjoyable picturing the holiday and day dreaming , perhaps even more so because human fallibilities have intruded!

Ah thank you. We nearly went to Cyprus one October half term (though of course I'm aware that isn't actually Greece and about 5 degrees warmer now I've checked!) Ignore me, am talking crap as usual 😂

caringcarer · 24/09/2026 19:31

Could you have 2 holidays? One now and one in October?

CarbootJunction · 24/09/2026 19:34

We were staying in a lovely cottage in Norfolk a few years ago, and agreed to book another fortnight in the following summer, whilst we were there.
Returned home to an email with the key collection details for that night. I'd booked the two weeks following our stay in the same bloody year. Sod's law, no-one was staying after us. We lost £1700. Gutted.

TheDogsMother · 23/09/2026 22:28

🤣 I know you are right but it just feels so irresponsible. Why ???

We are going away in October until mid Nov. Then back to same place for December. Thinking today that we might just extend first trip 🤔 We have enough schengen days and are both retired and no commitments at home. Also will save on heating during the bleak, grey cold months and cheaper there than UK, so we might be irresponsible as well 😬

Sueandthegoldfish · 24/09/2026 19:44

Have a wonderful holiday OP.
My daughter and partner were on a tiny Greek island a couple of months ago and one of the other couples thought it weird that they were getting messages saying their flight for the following night had been delayed.
Of course they’d got the dates wrong - their flight was that tonight from Athens. It was impossible to book new flights the following night so they ended up on a ferry to Mykonos and a flight from there 🙄

Surgz · 24/09/2026 19:46

Contact the hotel direct ask to change dates if poss.. if they cant do it they might be kind and refund you some.. i love the Greeks . Good luck

MissAmbrosia · 24/09/2026 20:00
