What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

I think her point was "we were a very working class family with no real life experience of cruise ships".

I only found out recently that the swimming-pool smell isn't chlorine, it's chloramines that are released when the chlorine reacts with urine.

@honeylulu I used to live in a country where hot water was provided from a central point rather than being heated in the house. So that's not so daft!

It's not just urine, its body oils, sweat etc. That's why you should shower before going on pools. And not pee in them too.

My father used to heat tins of rice pudding or soup or any food tins by putting said tins in a pan of water and then "boiling them until the label falls off" which indicated that they were done/cooked. This was presented to me as a bono fide known alternative to opening the tin and heating the contents in a pan. Keeps the flavour in and there's less washing up!

I never realised how odd this was until I was at university and asking my friend which method they were going to use to heat some rice pudding or soup or whatever. They looked at me like I was nuts and I remember picking up the tin to look at the instructions expecting to see both "methods" listed.

I was really surprised to learn this was something my Dad had devised rather than an accepted way to heat tinned food 😂

Not me, but I was shocked some years ago to find that dh, who has a degree and prof. qualifications, and attended a very academic boys’ school, had never heard of photosynthesis. The whole process on which life on earth depends, was completely new to him.

That there is a direct relationship between the town of Paisley, in Scotland, with all its mills, and paisley pattern fabric. What makes it worse is that I live near Paisley, and it took several years after we moved here for this realisation to dawn on me.
