Can I mention a missing purse and jewellery after workmen visited?

Well known plumbing company came in to fix central heating in our house and a few months later, I have discovered a designer purse missing, a couple of credit cards and a box of jewellery.
My husband says you can't blame it on them for sure as a BT engineer also came in a month later but he was only in the front bedroom. This stuff is definitely missing. What should I do now? Can I denounce them on social media and not get into trouble?

I would just like this company to be blacklisted without me getting into trouble.

That's a nasty thing to do. You can't possibly know it was them. You have ZERO proof. I hope if you berate them online, they find out it's you, and sue you for libel.

@YourAmplePlumPoster You sound unhinged.

PrettyLittleRose · 20/09/2026 17:23

What they said. ^

YourAmplePlumPoster · 20/09/2026 17:26

OK. They've taken two credit cards, a Louise Vuitton purse and a box of jewellery and this is supposed to be my imagination or carelessness? No wonder we have a barely functioning criminal justice system which let's criminals out early. I didn't notice it as I wasn't expecting to be robbed by workmen coming in to do routine jobs.

My Father could not find a bag of jewellery he had kept, from my late Mother. He kept it in a drawer in his bedroom and the only people who had been upstairs, other than me, were a group of men who had come to do insulation. He discovered this a few months after they had been.
luckily we had agreed there was no point going to the police and there was no concrete evidence to accuse them.
Just as well, because recently I was helping him sort a wardrobe out and yes, there was the bag at the back. He could not remember putting it there, but agreed he must have.

Because I didn't expect any thefts because they are a trusted company. But there is definitely stuff missing,

Has anyone used the cards?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 20/09/2026 17:35

Everyone who has been robbed are making it up and are nasty, selfish people. They deserved to be robbed. I was robbed of my cellphone a couple of years ago. Obviously I deserved this. OK, I get it. I will voluntarily give up my home and all my earthly goods and I encourage mumsnetters to follow suit.

U ok hun?

TeenToTwenties · 20/09/2026 17:39

Oh come on.
The items are missing.
But it was so long before you noticed you cannot possibly be certain when they went missing.

You may have moved them and forgotten.
Your partner if you have one may have moved the and forgotten.
Another visitor to your house may have taken them.
A sneak thief may have taken them when one day you left the front door open whilst in the back garden or whatever.

You cannot blacken a whole company based on this situation.

plumming · 20/09/2026 17:43

No one is saying it’s ok to steal, but you want to “blacklist” this company with no proof. You must see that it’s not ok to do that?

Pudmyboy · 20/09/2026 17:43

YourAmplePlumPoster · 20/09/2026 17:12

I've had that much stuff nicked over the years by cleaners etc. I was just not expecting a respected company to do this. You cannot trust anyone.

If this is the case, why haven't you ensured your valuables are somewhere locked when tradespeople come to your house? Once bitten and all that.
Yes I know you should be able to trust people, but if this keeps happening to you, a wall/floor safe or a lockable cupboard/ locks on your wardrobe or other furniture that you only use when you know these robbing tradespeople are coming round, may be a sound investment.
(BTW I don't think tradespeople are robbers, that was tongue in cheek).

You said it's not possible to check earlier in the thread. Which is it?

People who steal credit cards start using them immediately, because they know they only have a tiny window before the owners realize they are gone. If, as you faintly ambiguously suggest, you've checked and found no fraudulent charges since the dates the plumbers were in your house MONTHS AGO, then I reckon that purse is still kicking around the house somewhere.

Exactly. The OP has mislaid them and doesn't know where they are, and they want to go and ruin the livelihood of many people and get a company possibly closed down by destroying them online because of their own carelessness, and mislaying the items. Disgraceful behaviour really. As I said, if the OP does this, I hope the company sues them for everything.

It's a few months ago. You have absolutely no proof and are accusing people - saying 'didn't expect them to do this' - you seem sure it was them.

Why? I'm certain that in the few months since they have been other people have been in and out of your house.

You cannot do anything because you have no idea whether they have done anything.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 20/09/2026 18:03

This is going the way I thought it would. But since robbery is generally approved of these days in the UK, no surprise. They needed it. It was your fault for tempting them...

No.Nobody has been in my house since then. I am obviously in the wrong since I am well off and shouldn't complain about people stealing from me. Anyway, I'm off.
