What time do you like in till at weekends (if you’re not in work)?

So during the week I’m up by 0630. DH has asked if have any plans this weekend and I said is like a proper big lie in. He says I do this every week. I’m usually up by 0830. 9 is the very latest. I would truly love to stay asleep one day until 10am. Don’t have any children at home these days to require me being up early. I just can’t stay asleep but am still tired when I get up.
What’s the norm for people these days? I know it’s a ‘how long is a piece of string’ type question but I’m intrigued as to whether DH or me have the more common perception as to the ‘norm’.

I go to the car boot sales at the weekend so I’m up super early!

Squirrel437 · Yesterday 23:01

I’m retired so no set time to get up by in the week but aim for 8:30am / 9am latest. On Sundays it’s 10am / 10:30am as I read The Sunday Times online in bed with coffee - it’s my one guilty pleasure of the week.

I wish I could lie in I'm finding the older I get the less I can sleep and I hate it. Last night I was still thrashing round at 12.30 and then woke up at 6 this morning and was off work as we have a local bank holiday (Scottish grand national. I do have a slower morning though and chill out when not working.

Can I ask what time you usually go to bed, though?

You think the day is wasted if you get up later than 6am?

Flufffluff11 · Yesterday 23:09

Last weekend I stayed in bed until 12.00 midday

Yeah, that's a bit extreme. I think I've wasted the day (or some of it!) if I lie in past 10am. Anything 9.30am or before is OK. I prefer 8am or earlier though if possible.

If DC have activities which is most weeks. Then my alarm is set for 7.30 at the weekend. I am nearly always up before hand. The alarm is 6.30 during the week and my cats expect to be fed around 5 minutes after that at the weekend too.

Dd1 (15) doesn't seem to be programmed like normal teenagers and is often up between 6-6.30. Even if she is up and feeds the cats I still don't seem to be able to sleep past 7 recently.

5:30-7 in the week 6:30-8 at the weekend.
I have spaniels…

fiveyo · Today 07:05

My toddler woke me up at 3:30 this morning 😅.

Before kids I used to get up early for work in the week 5:30/6ish depending on the gym schedule. On the weekend I could rarely sleep beyond 8 but that felt like a decent lie in because I wouldn’t go to bed much later at the weekend either.

What do you mean by struggle?

Well, I’m one of those people who once I’m awake, I’m awake and I find it almost impossible to get back to sleep.

DH woke me up needing the loo about 6.55 this morning - he’s now back snoring and I’ve been wide awake since he got out of bed 😂

Mumofyellows · Today 08:10

I get up at 5.30-6 every day in the week and usually am awake by 6.30-7 on weekends. I get straight up, I can’t just lie in bed unless I’m unwell. Also I have 2 dogs who I would prefer to sit with having a coffee taking my time rather than being in bed.

UniquePinkSwan · Today 08:15

6 am every day. I like to keep to my sleep schedule. In bed at 9pm to read for an hour or 2 then sleep.

TheThirteenthFairy · Today 08:19

I'm retired and I'm up at the same time every day. I like the feeling.

DancingLions · Today 09:00

For me, it is just mostly dependant on when I go to sleep. I used to be able to lie in till 12 but that’s because I was going to sleep at 2 or 3am! Nowadays midnight is the absolute latest for me so as a consequence I tend not to be able to sleep past 9. Today I woke up at 8.

I wfh and my start time is flexible, and DC are adults, so I actually don’t set an alarm during the week either. Generally I wake anytime from 7 to 9. Have a coffee then start work. So it’s the same on weekends really, minus having to work.

GameOfJones · Today 09:05

I wish I could lie in but I seem physically incapable of staying asleep. I was out at a work event last night and didn't get home until after 1am. I was probably asleep around 2am and I still woke up at 7am. Once I'm awake, I'm awake so I'll occasionally have a coffee in bed and laze for a bit but then tend to want to get on with the day.

mindutopia · Today 09:08

Usually no later than 8:30, but like today I was up at 7 as had to drop dd off to a sports event by 8. I get up at 7 during the week and I pretty much stick to the same routine. I’m a morning person though and I don’t drink, so unless I’m ill, I can’t see any reason I would just lie around in bed.

Sunbringer · Today 09:09

I wake up at 8 on a weekend usually

MrsClattenburg · Today 09:30

I'm up between 5.30-6.15 in the week so like not being forced out of bed by an alarm at the weekend. Not too bothered about a big li-in but I like getting up on my own and sitting around with a coffee or two before a Saturday morning gym session. Usually up by 8am and hit the gym by 10am - perfect!

LittleBearPad · Today 09:32

I woke up just before 7am but I’m still in bed. I don’t think a lie in has to necessarily involve sleeping, it’s more lazing about in bed.

NameChangeScot · Today 09:35

I'm with you, I like to lie in until 10ish at weekend if we've not got plans. Today I've woken up at 9 and I'm annoyed at myself for being awake!

DustyMaiden · Today 09:51

Still in bed. Woke around 8 had breakfast and two cups of tea. Should really get up now.

NewYorkSummer · Today 10:02

I used to love lying in but the older I get the less I want to. Latest I will sleep is probably 8, although I might have a coffee in bed and read until 9 but then I want to get up. I can often be in bed by 10pm so I’ve had enough of it by that time.

LivingDeadGirlUK · Today 10:30

It takes me a few days of not having to get up before I stop waking at 6:30 regardless but when on holiday I will eventually manage to sleep in to 9am. My days of sleeping until midday are over, even if I have been drinking I still wake up early, which is horrible lol

backformoreofthesame · Today 10:34

The evidence suggests that if you are tired like that you won’t solve it with longer lie ins

you just need to regularly get to bed a little earlier

I know life makes that hard and makes you feel like you are missing out on free time

but long lie ins don’t help - just upset your body more

Yeah, my dad drilled this into me as a teenager (of course, I totally ignored him) but he was right.
