How would you react to personal ashes buried in your garden?

how would you feel if someone turned up at your home and let you know there grandfathers ashes were buried in the garden. The grandfathers late widow buried him in the garden, even though that wasn't what he or his family wanted.

No one was allowed in the house after the funeral and the house was sold after she died

It seems a total non issue to me, there will be bodies and ashes all over our small island - think how many people have lived and died here. We are all driving our ploughs over the bones of the dead.

Lots of burials and ashes in my garden, doesn’t bother me

AllHoityToity · 18/09/2026 07:32

I wouldn’t feel anything. If they wanted to get them back I’d be mildly irritated and try to facilitate it but emotionally I wouldn’t feel anything about it.

As they're in an urn, I'd dig it up and give it back to the family.

Scattered ashes wouldn't bother me. I have various pets buried in my garden. Their plaques will be coming with me when I move!

It wouldn’t bother me as a factual thing, ie ashes being present in my garden, but I would be concerned that the person who put them there might want to come and visit them. Which would be fine from time to time, but is something that could escalate as a person gets older and more lonely and sentimental. I know not everyone is like this, but I’ve seen it in so many elderly people, including my own relatives.

This is reminding me of my dad. He had my mother's ashes on a shelf near 'his' chair, usually with some flowers next to it.

He said when he went he wanted his ashes buried with my mothers but he didn't care where and we could stich them in the back garden if we wanted.

My dad’s ashes are buried in the garden of my old house.

no marker just a cherry tree.

I doubt people would care.

My dad's ashes are buried under a cherry tree in the garden of my last house too.
The cherries that grew were prolific and delicious.
There are also the skeletons of at least 15 pets in that garden, including one cat. We lived there for 30 years.

It’s an urn buried next to the shed

Then I too would ask the relatives if they wanted to dig it up and then they can do as was wished by their family member.

I wouldn’t care at all. 👍

Error404FucksNotFound · 18/09/2026 16:12

Id ask them if they would like to dig them up and take them

Sparrowsandbudgies · 18/09/2026 16:13

I wouldn’t care at all but I’d ask if they wanted to dig the urn up and take it away. Otherwise if it was somewhere I wanted to dig I’d just dig it up myself and scatter them in the garden.

GasPanic · 18/09/2026 16:25

Well I'd assume they turned up and told you because they wanted to do something different with them.

So that presumably involves removing them.

Either you are happy with that or you aren't.

But I think most people would be willing to facilitate their extraction. Unless they had been concreted over or something, or the extraction came at some sort of cost.

I might also wonder whether or not the reason the were so keen on getting them was because they were buried along with something else they wanted. As it seems like an unusual request (I think most people would just leave them be).
