Would you cap off 2nd toilet for storage space?

Bit more complicated than that but I have a daughter with ARFID and a lot of her meals are frozen and we stock up whe they are on offer to save money longterm. In my kitchen I have a fridge-freezer but the freezer just isn't big enough for normal family food plus DDs.

Last year I bought a chest freezer but the only place I could put it in kitchen was in front of the radiator. So had to turn the radiator off all winter and it was absolutely freezing in there.

So I did a small renovation to kitchen and ended up making a sort of breakfast bar counter over the radiator because I decided I couldn't keep the freezer there and suffer without heating another winter.

I 'temporarily' put the chest freezer in my living room and its been there 6 months now.

Theres absolutely no where for it to go in kitchen.

It's sat now in the bay of my window and I want it gone because its where my Christmas tree goes, plus its just bloody weird having a freezer in your living room.

The only other place it could go downstairs is the cloakroom toilet. But we are a large family and it would be taking us down to 1 toilet which is in the bathroom (so issues with people having baths but toilet needed etc)

There are 3 males/3 females and non of the females use the downstairs loo ever because its dark and dingy and its just known as the boy toilet. So part of me thinks if we can manage to never use it, they can too?

Only other option I can fathom is it going in my bedroom but I don't particularly want that either 😮‍💨

I wouldn't be removing the toilet. Just draining and removing water supply and probably boxing it in.

Keep the second toilet.

PersephoneParlormaid · 14/09/2026 08:30

With 6 of you in the house? No.

bcisagtwt · 14/09/2026 08:31

6 people and just 1 toilet? No I absolutely would not do that. If you remove the ‘boy’ toilet, you’re just overcrowding the main bathroom.

I would suck up a freezer in the living room over losing a toilet (even as a family of 4!)

PrivateCitizen · 14/09/2026 08:33

Do you have any outside space? Could you put it in (an insulated) shed close to the house?

Sunseed · 14/09/2026 08:33

Do you have any outside space - a shed where the freezer could go?

somekindof · 14/09/2026 08:35

This doesn’t sound like a good solution. How big is the freezer? Is it a standard 60cm unit? It’s hard to make suggestions without knowing the layout of your house but there must be somewhere else it can go. Is there room on a landing? It could even go outside- you could put one of those wheelybin shelters over it and just run a cable out of a window.

6 people using one toilet would be the absolute last resort for me. There are 5 of us and I can’t imagine how we’d all get out of the house on time in the morning if there was one bathroom and no other toilet. I know plenty of families do, but when you’re used to having two going to one would not be a choice I’d make.

You manage to never use it because the other 3 do. It would be lot of peoppe for one toilet. Can you get different freezer? Sell this one and buy standing one which requires less footprint?

I have a shed but its absolutely full and no electricity to it.

They only pee in there, nobody uses it for #2 because its full of DHs boxes of crap so they scoot passed for a piss only.

If they need #2 they go upstairs

No

Nannyfannybanny · 14/09/2026 08:40

we had a similar dilemma! It was social housing. An old cottage, one big bedroom,2 tiny, built into roof eves so 2 sloping ceilings, each room.bathroom added on the side (house built before bathrooms were the norm) There was a lobby by the back door, 3 dks, oldest had left home, second toilet in there,we had to use it for basic storage, like the vacuum cleaner there was no where else. Freezer in shed. Would that be a possibility? You work with what you have. One DC has always had a downstairs cloakroom, now has 4 dks,no second toilet. social housing. I thought she would find it difficult, she doesn't.

BibityBah · 14/09/2026 08:41

The chest freezer is only a 55cm x 55cm one.

Then obvious solution is to get rid of boxes.
3 people even just peeing would add lots of traffic to the other toilet

Fyr · 14/09/2026 08:44

God no no not!

BillieWiper · 14/09/2026 08:44

Get rid of the boxes of crap. Do not render the toilet unusable.

Fyr · 14/09/2026 08:45

And maybe clear out some stuff in the full shed, move them to the boys toilet?

Declutter

MarlowCrossing · 14/09/2026 08:46

If the chest freezer would fit in the downstairs loo I would pull out everything from that space and put it in there, forcing your Dh to sort out his boxes. Maybe sit him down to watch a Sort Your Life Out episode to inspire him.

Alternatively as there are 6 people in the house I would look to replace the kitchen fridge freezer with a full height larder fridge and then lose a cabinet and worktop space to have a full height larder freezer.

onmylastnerveseriously · 14/09/2026 08:47

This would make your mornings hellish. Not worth it for saving 20 pence a meal or whatever

somekindof · 14/09/2026 08:49

Surely some of the boxes of crap in the downstairs toilet or the shed can be got rid off to make room for the freezer.
You can run an extension cable to the shed.

goldenpanda · 14/09/2026 08:50

With 6 people, a second toilet is the last thing in the house I would remove.

Chest freezer in the bedroom seems like the least worst option.

dudsville · 14/09/2026 08:51

Keep the toilet. Do a massive clear out and reorganisation.

get rid of DH boxes full of crap, that'll give you some space.

stick a big tablecloth over the freezer in the meantime and treat it as a table.

Telecone · 14/09/2026 08:58

No no no.

HelpfulHelena · 14/09/2026 08:59

Could you accept having a full height freezer in the lounge? Then you could get rid of the chest freezer. They hum so I’d rather have it in the lounge than the bedroom personally!
