Would you cap off 2nd toilet for storage space?

Bit more complicated than that but I have a daughter with ARFID and a lot of her meals are frozen and we stock up whe they are on offer to save money longterm. In my kitchen I have a fridge-freezer but the freezer just isn't big enough for normal family food plus DDs.

Last year I bought a chest freezer but the only place I could put it in kitchen was in front of the radiator. So had to turn the radiator off all winter and it was absolutely freezing in there.

So I did a small renovation to kitchen and ended up making a sort of breakfast bar counter over the radiator because I decided I couldn't keep the freezer there and suffer without heating another winter.

I 'temporarily' put the chest freezer in my living room and its been there 6 months now.

Theres absolutely no where for it to go in kitchen.

It's sat now in the bay of my window and I want it gone because its where my Christmas tree goes, plus its just bloody weird having a freezer in your living room.

The only other place it could go downstairs is the cloakroom toilet. But we are a large family and it would be taking us down to 1 toilet which is in the bathroom (so issues with people having baths but toilet needed etc)

There are 3 males/3 females and non of the females use the downstairs loo ever because its dark and dingy and its just known as the boy toilet. So part of me thinks if we can manage to never use it, they can too?

Only other option I can fathom is it going in my bedroom but I don't particularly want that either 😮‍💨

I wouldn't be removing the toilet. Just draining and removing water supply and probably boxing it in.

i moved my kitchen bin recently as i needed the space for shoe racks of summer footwear and im fed up with flies.

The bins now just outside the back door and inside i have two small bin liners hung on a kitchen cupboard door indoors instead (but i try not to use them and go outside to the bin).

could you chuck your bin out and put the chest freezer there instead if it’s only half a metre big?

get rid of DH boxes full of crap, that'll give you some space.

stick a big tablecloth over the freezer in the meantime and treat it as a table.

Im calling it crap but its not crap, it's stuff he needs for work but there is no where else to put it

No - get rid of boxes and stuff in shed not needed and put it in there or put it in a bedroom with a cloth over.
Do you have a separate Dining Room? Growing up we had a freezer in ours for years…..
Do not sacrifice the second toilet because you have too much clutter elsewhere - and get DH to clear his boxes out anyway!
I have a friend who wants to move and cannot sell her house as all the feedback is ‘nice but there’s only one loo’……

Our bins are outside.

I would build a shed or
lean to close to the house, and with a power supply.

BibityBah · 14/09/2026 09:00

I have a full size larder fridge.

i cannot do anything to cupboards as we rent.

If you can't do anything to the cupboards because you rent, how will you get away with capping off a toilet?

thisismeithinkorisit · 14/09/2026 09:03

well part of the reason you manage to only use the upstairs loo is cos half the family are using the downstairs loo

I'd temporarily lock it off, and see if it works. I think you might find 3 guys using your upstairs loo makes it harder for you too

MarlowCrossing · 14/09/2026 09:04

I didn't realise you were renting.

What is in the shed? The freezer is clearly a priority so why not have a family meeting about where it can be stored? Anything you don't need access to on a weekly basis could be stored at a family member's house or in actual paid storage units. So what could you relocate?

thisismeithinkorisit · 14/09/2026 09:05

BibityBah · 14/09/2026 09:01

Im calling it crap but its not crap, it's stuff he needs for work but there is no where else to put it

so his work stuff goes in the garage and the freezer goes in the loo.

IAmInTheHouseSidney · 14/09/2026 09:05

You absolutely can't cap and remove toilet in rental

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 14/09/2026 09:06

The simplest solution is, as a PP has suggested, get a nice throw, chuck it over the freezer and turn it into a coffee table.

Sereine · 14/09/2026 09:06

Do you by any chance have a garage it could go in?

I'm not removing it. Im just removing the water and shutting off the supply then DH will probably build a removable box to cover it.

I think capping off was the wrong term. I think that means removing it?

I suppose it’s better than the post a couple of weeks ago that added a loo to their rental property!

What garage? 🤣

If we had a garage do you not think I would just put the freezer in there?!

I don't even have a drive 🤣

frozendaisy · 14/09/2026 09:09

Work stuff in a nice storage unit in bedroom

extra freezer in downstairs loo

babasaclover · 14/09/2026 09:10

@BibityBah can you put a little shed in the garden? We did this years ago before we had a kitchen extension and we called it the utility shed. It also had a tumble dryer.

Also sending good wishes to you I have ARFID as an adult and it’s a nightmare

I did not see that one, but wowza

Ashmoleum · 14/09/2026 09:11

You have to be creative and focus on the need not the want.

So the big obstacle in the living area is the Christmas Tree position. Come on love, that's a couple of weeks a year. Find another corner for that, even the hallway, wherever, and keep the freezer where it is. As pp said, cover it with a throw and put a plant (or a mini Christmas Tree when the time comes!) on top. And many do have fridges and freezers in the living/dining areas where space in the kitchen is limited. Be sensible, losing the toilet is not possible if you are renting anyway, so forget that one!

All this fuss for a Christmas Tree, because that's all this is about really. Isn't it?

Don't call me love.

It's not just the Christmas tree. I don't want a big, white chest freezer in my living room. It's unsightly.

And I'm not 'losing' the toilet. Its not going anywhere. It just wouldn't be used as a toilet but would have storage and the fridge in there. It would be unusable but still there!

GloriaNow · 14/09/2026 09:13

Even if females don't use the downstairs one, they know it is there and it can be used. Keep it working.
Clear the shed put freezer in there. You only need an extension lead to power the freezer.
We have an external socket that is connected to an ordinary socket in the house.

Oh, it was very made up weird. She was upset that the new tenants wouldn’t pay for it and wanted to remove it. Or something.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/09/2026 09:15

No way

AntiHop · 14/09/2026 09:15

Forget the Christmas tree. We live in z very small house and we decided to stop putting out the Christmas tree. We havd lights on the walls instead.
