Would you cap off 2nd toilet for storage space?

Bit more complicated than that but I have a daughter with ARFID and a lot of her meals are frozen and we stock up whe they are on offer to save money longterm. In my kitchen I have a fridge-freezer but the freezer just isn't big enough for normal family food plus DDs.

Last year I bought a chest freezer but the only place I could put it in kitchen was in front of the radiator. So had to turn the radiator off all winter and it was absolutely freezing in there.

So I did a small renovation to kitchen and ended up making a sort of breakfast bar counter over the radiator because I decided I couldn't keep the freezer there and suffer without heating another winter.

I 'temporarily' put the chest freezer in my living room and its been there 6 months now.

Theres absolutely no where for it to go in kitchen.

It's sat now in the bay of my window and I want it gone because its where my Christmas tree goes, plus its just bloody weird having a freezer in your living room.

The only other place it could go downstairs is the cloakroom toilet. But we are a large family and it would be taking us down to 1 toilet which is in the bathroom (so issues with people having baths but toilet needed etc)

There are 3 males/3 females and non of the females use the downstairs loo ever because its dark and dingy and its just known as the boy toilet. So part of me thinks if we can manage to never use it, they can too?

Only other option I can fathom is it going in my bedroom but I don't particularly want that either 😮‍💨

I wouldn't be removing the toilet. Just draining and removing water supply and probably boxing it in.

Don't call me love.

It's not just the Christmas tree. I don't want a big, white chest freezer in my living room. It's unsightly.

And I'm not 'losing' the toilet. Its not going anywhere. It just wouldn't be used as a toilet but would have storage and the fridge in there. It would be unusable but still there!

You can cover the freezer with plyboard and make it useful for other stuff. No need to be so snippy anyway, we are all trying to help but you appear to reject or not consider any suggestion due to unsuitability for you. That's fair enough, so you have to stick with what you've got I think!

There are 4 of us and 3 bathrooms here - no way would I consider 6 people and one loo! Madness. Imagine the carnage when one of the kids brings a sickness bug home…
Think outside the box for the Christmas tree - an outdoor one outside of the window for example? Save hoovering the needles too!

I would fit the freezer in the shed.
Buy a commercial, rain safe extention cord.

If not the shed then along a back or side wall of the house. The freezer can live outdoors.
It could be placed in a handy spot where it is helpful when emptying your car of groceries etc.

FourSevenFive · 14/09/2026 09:25

Keep it where it is, get a throw over it, and stand a small christmas tree on top of it when the time comes.

HoraceCope · 14/09/2026 09:25

you can buy a plastic lockable storage thing, for something, presumably not the freezer

TheFrendo · 14/09/2026 09:28

Can you put the freezer outside? Would need a very simple shelter and cover.

HoraceCope · 14/09/2026 09:30

will she be on these meals forever?

I'm not removing it. Im just removing the water and shutting off the supply then DH will probably build a removable box to cover it.

I think capping off was the wrong term. I think that means removing it?

Do you mean you would remove the water in the u bend of the toilet?

That water prevents foul-smelling and toxic sewer gases from entering the house.

Even if left as it is currently, the water in an unused toilet will eventually evaporate and so not block those sewer gases.

I wouldn't risk it, personally.

It would be worth getting a second shed with electricity I think, or replacing your current shed with a bigger one. Our second freezer is in the shed. And it sounds like you need more storage space anyway. AND your DH needs to sort out his stuff!

Ponderingwindow · 15/09/2026 18:04

Have you ever experienced multiple people with multi-day food poisoning and one toilet? I will never willingly live in a home with only one toilet ever again.

I too have a child with ARFID. I understand it has ripple effects. I would look to move the appliance to another room.

Morepositivemum · 15/09/2026 18:07

If you’re renting and not doing anything to it- but then a freezer in the loo just seems wrong . I think your only option is a shed/ the shed or make room/ don’t store as much

Hobbin · 15/09/2026 18:11

Could you keep it where it is and install kickboard heaters in the kitchen? I would try to keep the loo with 6 of you.

Hobbin · 15/09/2026 18:13

... or if you cost up kickboard heaters it might stir DH to move his stuff

ToadRage · 15/09/2026 18:26

Do you not have a garage or shed? My Dad put our chest freezer in the cellar but I get most houses don't have them. If we had one it would probably go in the garage but our freezer is sufficient for our needs. Could you have a clean out and rearrange to make more room in your freezer? Are there meals you can make that don't require freezing so the space can be used for your daughters meals? If you batch cook can you make something or arrange meals so they only need to be kept in the fridge.

GalaDinner · 17/09/2026 05:53

If you don't have storage beds every where, I recommend the Ikea Brimnes bed base, we have one in Spain. There are four huge bins/ drawers under the bed, and each will take 20kg of weight. They swallow a mountain of stuff. Put your DH's stuff in there and reallocate the space in eg the downstairs loo.

We have a different bedhead on ours and it looks really nice.

WhatYouEgg · 17/09/2026 06:22

How much money are you saving by bulk buying on offer? How does that compare to the electricity costs of running the freezer and the space it takes up?

If it is vital to keep a massive supply in (in case of lack of availability and you run out), I would go for a full scale massive declutter, find another place for the work stuff and move the chest freezer there. Hard to think of another place without seeing the house layout. I’d definitely not reduce toilet availability down to 1.
