Why is there so much stealth wealth talk on here lately?

What’s with all the stealth, wealth bragging on here lately?

OP posts:
BugJuice · 13/09/2026 21:00

Just lately? It’s always been like this.

ThatCyanCat · 13/09/2026 21:00

It's not new.

A few of them will even be true!

Lmnop22 · 13/09/2026 21:26

Wait so you’re not earning 6 figures a year, owning your own home, sitting on savings of £100k and waiting on an imminent inheritance of an unimaginable sum?

Ineedanewsofa · 13/09/2026 21:30

Because fibbers like to rage bait mainly but on the off chance one or two are genuine, I reckon it’s because MN has a reputation for being full of wealthy, middle class, fancy London types and they genuinely think they might find some insight from people in the same boat. It’s also impossible to talk about finances openly IRL as cost of living has pissed off the entire country

pasanda · 13/09/2026 21:31

I doubt many of them are true. Just stupid people living in a world of their own! 😂. Or if they’re true, posting about it probably makes them feel ever so important and sanctimonious about people who are ‘less’ than them. Whether financially or anything else. It just makes me laugh tbh!

PrettyLittleRose · 13/09/2026 21:38

Are these the same posters who pass out at the thought of more than 2 squares of dark chocolate a week, have one grape for dessert, think anyone over a size 8, and 7 and a half stone is 'obese,' and didn't have their first baby til 41 (like everyone in their 'social circle.') They always have at least 2 university degrees - (from a red brick university,) a husband who is 6 ft 4, and 10 years older than them (who earns nearly double the £185K a year they earn,) and very tall, athletic, academic children....

Yep, I know the ones. 😆

I think this too. Mumsnet seems to be very London centric and full of very wealthy people moaning about their diamond shoes being too tight. Or lying. It's like going on the education threads and no DC getting grades lower than all 9's at GCSE or 4 A* at A level despite that scenario being 1% of the cohort.

RomeoRivers · 13/09/2026 21:40

I could say the same about all the posts from single mothers with multiple kids in tiny houses… are they making things up to be dramatic or maybe people are just talking about their real life and are able to be more honest than they would irl because mumsnet is anonymous.

Never seen any posts like this.

Yeah, like only 4 to 5% of the population of the UK earns above £100K a year, and they all seem to be on Mumsnet! 😂 Sooooooo many tall husbands too, and very slender people, and tall academic children, who will of course, go to Cambridge or Oxford!

I always think MN is full of very average people with hardly any disposable income.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 13/09/2026 21:53

Clearly I’m on the wrong threads. I’ve seen a couple of outliers who think six figures is “normal” but don’t notice it as much as I notice how many posters put up with shit men and just seem so passive about their lives.

mumumental · 13/09/2026 22:04

If it’s true, the boasting is down to low self esteem.

I agree. Lots of fantasists.

No, but I can feed a family of six on a single chicken for 3 weeks

pippistrelle · 13/09/2026 22:10

I hope they're fantasists. Because if they're not, they're very vulgar.

You know there are lots of poor types in London too right?

Seem below average tbh, obsessed with
' the big shop' at Tesco, going through their partners phone and all inclusive holidays. Also gaming, screen time , picking up 'bits' Christmas in August, taking kids out of school, never answering the door and seasonally decorating house a la B&M.

Are you describing yourself?

Rollercoaster1920 · 13/09/2026 22:22

I'm a londoner and feel that Mumsnet feels quite London centric at times. But then I remember that it's about 1/6th of the UK population, with the south east being 1/3rd of the population of the UK.
I'm pretty sure they were all in covent garden this weekend too.

Clearly their parents never told them it’s gauche to brag about money.

EligibleTern · 13/09/2026 22:27

I noticed it on that recent thread about things you could afford, but choose not to spend money on. People falling over themselves to run to the thread and post about how they could OBVIOUSLY afford a massive house, top of the range car, etc etc etc, but would not be so gauche as to buy one... It also regularly gets shoehorned into threads on Style and Beauty ("I would never spend that much on a handbag, although I could easily afford to.")

And wondering if you can afford to make ends meet without taking in washing.
