Potential 6 month warning until the end

So, we potentially only have 6 months until the end of civilised society and mass deaths. I’m terrified and sad

It’s the headline of the BBC, I’ve not made it up ffs

How old are you? We were all going to get nuked by Russia when i was a child, rabies also featured heavily. I think every generation has its "thing". David Icke was perfectly sane til he wasn't.

ItwasntPeri · 13/09/2026 12:14

I do believe there’s a small chance it could wipe us out but I think it’s far more likely to just cause absolute chaos when it decides to do precisely what it wants based on the principles taught to it by programmers . Like bad parents who have a highly intelligent and ultra rich teenager they just can’t control, they created it , cultivated the problems, errors of judgement were not controlled then they are given the means to do whatever they want and go forth and cause mayhem.

Again, read Amodei. He explains why he started AI, what he believes what it can do (positive) and why it’s a crucial - and very limited - point in time to stop the negatives which he believes, along with the rest of the AI community could bring down humanity. If we don’t do something now.

Unfortunately he's acting alongside psychopaths who would love to be involved in mass destruction. Israeli IDF used AI against Gaza.

The planet needs an e.l.e to sort itself out. Might not be a bad thing,

I wonder if summer 2027 will be a damp squib, or a scorcher like 2026? I'm looking forward to next June, as my nephew is getting married, and I haven't been to a wedding for a while.

I am certainly not frozen with fear in my chair because I think the world as we know it is going to end in March 2027. 🙄

Are there really genuinely people in real life who think like this?

Yes of course! I’m terrified. I’m not stuck in a chair though; still going to work, walking the dog etc. Might as well be moving about rather than sitting still, I’m scared either way so it makes no difference what I’m doing. If you met me while I’m doing my job or walking the dog, you’d have no idea I’m losing my mind. I’m exceptionally good at masking. I will just continue to not use ChatGPT, Claude etc or Alexa/Siri. never have and hopefully never will.

Next summer is predicted to be hotter than the last. At least the AI threat has diverted my attention away from climate change for a while so that’s something I suppose.

ginasevern · 13/09/2026 12:17

I don't think there's any denying that AI is a concern, if only for the subsequent job losses and restructuring of society. The like of which probably hasn't been seen since the industrial revolution. People were rightly scared then. The difference is that industrial weaving looms didn't have the potential for independent thought or global catastrophic error.

We can all stuff our faces during the festive season and not have to worry about the dreaded January diet? Great.

Perfect. Won't even have to worry about DP birthday present either

because there’s about a 6-12month window where pressure on governments can result in the framework that’s been proposed being activated. That will slow down development - not stop it - but it will allow alignment (basically safety and ethics) to catch up. At the moment the AI is advancing beyond human control and there’s an incredibly limited time to stop it before we can’t anymore.

Exactly.

Whole countries, including China need to take notice of the people who’ve developed AI and agree to slow it down so it does not end up harming us.

And we have about 6-12 months to do that.

There’s a huge amount of ignorance on this thread. The people who invented AI are terrified, some have resigned because they don’t want to be involved with it any more and they are warning all of us to wake up and put pressure on our governments.

This. Even just in the last few years, according to Mumsnet panics we should all be dead several times over from nukes, a Russian invasion, Hantavirus, who knows what else.

I'm not denying any of these things have had - or could have - devastating consequences. But I've no idea what the point is in constantly panicking about the next threat as soon as the last one didn't come true.

In 1999, some of the experts said the new millennium would cause planes to fall from sky, banking systems to disrupt and internet systems to interpret 00 as 1900 which would cause widespread chaos.

And yet…

And yet those things didn't happen thanks to a huge global effort to prevent them!

It wasn't that the experts were wrong, or fear mongering.

This. ^ I feel embarrassed for the people who believe this absolute nonsense.

They need to get a hobby or two. And stop the ridiculous doom-scrolling and scaremongering.

TooOldForAllThatNow · 13/09/2026 12:20

I was at an AI conference the back end of last week. The look on the experts' faces when someone asked the panel in jest about the 10% chance of it killing of humanity told me everything I needed to know about how serious the situation is. The ENTIRE room fell silent.

Yep. THIS is what the OP and the people agreeing with her think we're all going to be seeing by March 2027! 😬

You feel embarrassed for people who are experiencing extreme anxiety? How kind of you. Are you also embarrassed for people who are depressed?

I feel embarrassed for people who say “we’ve always had something”.

You obviously don’t understand there’s a difference between a leader of government deciding to attack another country and a machine, which absolutely no input from a human, deciding to attack entire populations?

Only 10%? 50% might be more warranted for experts' facial expressions to change to horror perhaps.

I don’t fully understand what you’re saying here. They went silent because it wasn’t worth answering or because they fear it’s true? What was the look on their faces?

Waitingfordoggo · 13/09/2026 12:26

LOL @ ‘only’ 10% 😂

Yeah, 1 in 10 chance is totally fine odds for this.

Please explain how you've worked out that it's 99.99% not likely to happen? Or, alternatively, you could stop spouting nonsense and we could actually listen to the people who understand the industry?

If you don't want to listen to anyone who is currently in the industry, you could listen to those who have resigned. For example Geoffrey Hinton - the "godfather of AI" (because he played a big part in inventing it). He's spent the last few years warning people about the dangers of AI. He recently upgraded his predicted 10% risk of AI killing off humanity to a 20% risk. He's an expert in the field and a Nobel prize winner. But perhaps you know better than he does?

You know Hinton has a new book coming out in March 2027. I guess he's still expecting to be around then.

Oh my GOD, did someone actually ask that?! 😂

They did! They refused to be drawn on it at first but then said it's unlikely in the next decade but at the current speed that agentic AI is developing, it needs guardrails.

I think quite a few people have forgotten that a whole load of experts put their name to a 6 month pause in development not that long ago to try and get their heads together and agree a plan.

I also think that the general public thinks that the tip of the AI iceberg is putting a picture of their living room in GPT and getting a new design. Or maybe even Terminator. A lot of people have no clue that agentic AI agents could link up with other AI agents and do whatever it needs to, to survive like takeover the national grid or the MoD. I think that's more terrifying for me.
