Potential 6 month warning until the end

So, we potentially only have 6 months until the end of civilised society and mass deaths. I’m terrified and sad

AI staff 'genuinely frightened' for humanity's future, ex-Anthropic researcher tells BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1kx0gyje9wo

How will all the billionaires behind AI make money from us if we're all dead and gone. Will they turn into robots or what.

They are so rich that they possibly no longer are motivated by becoming richer. Their focus could be based in power or notoriety.

Zov · 13/09/2026 11:58

I wonder if summer 2027 will be a damp squib, or a scorcher like 2026? I'm looking forward to next June, as my nephew is getting married, and I haven't been to a wedding for a while.

I am certainly not frozen with fear in my chair because I think the world as we know it is going to end in March 2027. 🙄

Are there really genuinely people in real life who think like this?

I work in AI governance in a very large UK organisation.

There is certainly the potential for things to go very wrong, ideally governments of the world would work together on safety with full transparency on what in development, a bit like with nuclear weapons. There's no way that'll happen soon enough.

Individual governments have AI acts (the UK doesn't!) but little to ensure developers are following them, and they're concerned with live applications not test and development which is where it'll all go wrong.

Its too fast and too hidden to do anything but hope in my opinion. I'm not concerned about AI overlords, but bad actors will use it to make money or mischief.

I wouldn't bother making it your main voting strategy, the UK has little influence. Climate change is a bigger threat to your way of life and something you can act on at a local level rather than net zero.

Full agree.

Caniweartheseones · 13/09/2026 11:58

People are being very dismissive. Is it because you are all scared? We can do something. We can talk about it, learn more, make our feelings known and demand change.

Like we did and do with children’s access to social media. Like the way so many social rebellions have worked. Why stick your heads in the sand? Because you’re on your phone all the time? Way to make people passive…

Zov · 13/09/2026 11:59

People are being 'dismissive' because it's nothing but ludicrous scaremongering @Caniweartheseones designed to put the fear of God into people about something that is 99.99% not likely to happen.

We are not 'scared.' 🙄

Do you think the earth is flat too? And are you an anti vaxxer? And do you think that covid was fake? I bet the answers to all 3 questions is yes. Wink

ADHDDoomScroller · 13/09/2026 12:00

With respect, mass deaths are already happening, we are already there. I am not scared simply because I have not watched the news since Ukraine was invaded, and I have made peace with my privilege and lack of control. Just focus on making your corner of the world as good as it can be, if everyone did that, we'd be fine.

Oh well I won't bother with the ironing then

Off topic, but why does anybody bother with Ironing full stop Blush

This does remind me of the film ‘Don’t Look Up’.

It is an AI race with China, they (Western AI companies) want to slow China down so they can make more profit and have more power BUT it is absolutely worrying. The impact on the environment and human security is undeniable. We are destroying the human race. The earth will still be here and will recover but we’ve set the human race up to fail all because some megalomaniac narcissists want all the money and power.

I fear for the future. The only thing that makes me feel better is nature and friends and family. That’s what is important and what is the most spectacularly amazing reason it’s such a privilege to be a human being.

Wasn't that film about a meteor heading for earth and they had a way of destroying it but realised it had precious resources so tried to mine it instead and it all went very wrong? I don't remember AI at all.

Blows my mind that so many people are so wilfully ignorant.

The idea that this is at all likely is really ignorant. What do you actually know about AI and the risks? There seems to be a spate of these 'doomed were all doomed' threads at the minute. No one knows what the future of AI will be let alone imminent doom scenarios.

Caniweartheseones · 13/09/2026 12:02

Do any of you know anything about it? How AI is independent in scary ways? Steals data? Doesn’t follow rules or laws? Steals/ fakes identities to get away with it?
You’ll feel fine about it until something happens to you.

Dontcallmescarface · 13/09/2026 12:03

Well isn't that typical, I've just booked a holiday for next July.

Exactly. It's all nonsense. Perpetrated by people who have too much time on their hands, and who need to get some hobbies. Get outside, touch some grass, breathe some fresh country air, go for a swim in the sea! Just stop bloody doom-scrolling and spouting nonsense!!!

Anthropic is going public later this year. They're trying to create as much hype as possible to get people talking about them.

As usual, follow the money.

If you read the article, you'll find out that lots of top experts in the field are extremely worried.

Oh well.

I've read the article. I've also read things outside of that article, including the Amodei link OP keeps posting (which does not agree we're going to be wiped out in 6 months) and things written by academics and independent AI researchers (who don't gain financially from creating panic).

No, I'm not laughing at the OP,I'm laughing at the end of the world stuff.

You’ll feel fine about it until something happens to you.

It follows it's programming, humans have not made the programming robust enough. GIGO they used to call it, garbage in garbage out, if you make mistakes in the programming the computer will follow what you said not what you meant. Of course some people may be deliberately creating programs for AI to 'steal data', etc for their own purposes.

Caniweartheseones · 13/09/2026 12:07

What on earth? How about you get back to me in a year and see how you feel then? I’m way more informed obviously.
You ok with people who are heads of AI saying there’s a 30% chance humanity will be destroyed this century ( that one was Elon)

I very much doubt it I've worked all my life in computers and programming. What do you know about computing apart from dramatic headlines?

I really don't care if humanity is destroyed - we've fucked up this planet enough already.

Sunnnyday · 13/09/2026 11:25

YOU think (what - the you who knows better than the leading experts in the field?) PROBABLY A VERY MINUTE CHANCE (again, what exactly are you basing this view on?).

The way people just assume that everything will be okay, completely ignoring the fact that those who are warning us are the people who actually know what they're talking about, is why we're in the situation we're now in. This is the age of stupid. Humans have developed beings which will very soon be far more intelligent than we are and will become the master race. And for what? So that a few people could become richer and have, arguably, higher status among humans for a few years.

Most of the posts on this thread are from people who are completely ignorant and want to stay that way, or are in denial.

I'm not saying my views are absolutely true. I've been reading press releases in my freelance editor job that talk about how companies need to bolster cybersecurity and become more vigilant against the threat of AI. Yes. The threat is there. Being hyperbolic and saying doomsday is neigh and we're all going to have limited time left is a little bit of an overreaction.

Edited

Please explain how you've worked out that it's 99.99% not likely to happen? Or, alternatively, you could stop spouting nonsense and we could actually listen to the people who understand the industry?

If you don't want to listen to anyone who is currently in the industry, you could listen to those who have resigned. For example Geoffrey Hinton - the "godfather of AI" (because he played a big part in inventing it). He's spent the last few years warning people about the dangers of AI. He recently upgraded his predicted 10% risk of AI killing off humanity to a 20% risk. He's an expert in the field and a Nobel prize winner. But perhaps you know better than he does?
