Potential 6 month warning until the end

So, we potentially only have 6 months until the end of civilised society and mass deaths. I’m terrified and sad

AI staff 'genuinely frightened' for humanity's future, ex-Anthropic researcher tells BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1kx0gyje9wo

Ffs find yourself a hobby, utterly ridiculous doom merchant.

It’s the headline of the BBC, I’ve not made it up ffs

If Trump said this he’d be laughed at. This is one persons opinion based on how much research ?

All the more reason to live for today. None of us know what's round the corner. Healthy people die every day from car accidents, global disasters, freak accidents, murder etc.

I think of poor Ann Widdecombe, who woke up on that fateful day and was murdered by lunch time.

There is no point worrying about things that may or may not happen. Just live in the moment you will be so much happier.

I agree to an extent. But we can do both. We can live for the day AND actively pressurise those who can do something, to do something. We can make our voices known and we can stop using AI

Heard it all before.
Absolutely nothing will happen.

I read stuff like this, roll my eyes, laugh and move on.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/09/2026 10:52

I cant say Im sorry. I think mother earth needs a new apex predator. This one stinks.

In all seriousness, bloody great idea 💡

Well, unless the apocalypse doesn't happen. In which case you'd be in a bit of a pickle.

Definitelygoing · 13/09/2026 10:53

I agree with you OP, but they're talking about a probability, albeit it quite high, and it could be at any time. So we can't prepare for it, as it could happen in a few months or a few decades, and if the latter we can hope something is done to mitigate it.
Those who mentioned AI slop do not understand the serious advances in AI that we don't usually see, AI slop is a tiny tiny part of what is being developed. Google what AI is doing for the military for example.

It’s not one persons’ opinion. The head’s of Anthropic, Open AI and Elon Musk have said they agree. Not necessarily to the exact timeline. But that if something isn’t done we face the end of humanity in the immediate future. I think Musk said 20% chance by 2030.

Are people not reading the news about this to keep informed?

I don't pretend to be more of an expert than, er...the experts, but we should apply critical thinking and separate “this is a coherent risk worth taking seriously” from “mankind will be extinct by next Christmas.”

The science that supports the risk of the explosion of "superintelligence" which could possibly wipe us out (around a 10% chance in the next 10 years, not over 90% chance in 6 months) is perfectly credible. But humans still exist to implement safety measures which would remove that risk and retain our control - we just need to hurry up about it.

There is some risk, but we're not dead yet. Start the diet and do the ironing.

Oh. No point doing Sober October then.

I am no expert and certainly these people know more than me but what can I do? What can any individual do to stop whatever is threatening us e.g climate change, war etc....

But how do you think being informed will help?

If AI is capable of creating a drone army and decides to take out humanity, probably not all that much we could do?

I suppose we may end up in a MAD situation.

Frombeyond · 13/09/2026 10:57

Darker · 13/09/2026 10:48

I agree with you @EveryoneUsingOutro , in that there is nothing we can do and worrying about it won’t make any difference. The best thing we can do is try not to let it get us down.

It’s a hard thing to discuss in real life. Yet we’ve all heard the news. We all know what’s been said.

I’m not sure many people have engaged with the news this week based on this thread and the amount of people calling me ridiculous.

If we are all going to die in six months then there's not much point worrying about it, in the sense that it's not going to make any difference if you worry or not.

Contain4 · 13/09/2026 10:59

I swear they say this every 6 months.

I never worry about the end of the world because we’ll all be dead.

I do worry that this country is going to end up like the Middle East.
The rise of the far right scares me as a woman.

Anything like this report reminds me to not stress so much about the little things and that things like my front room desperately needing painting is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

because there’s about a 6-12month window where pressure on governments can result in the framework that’s been proposed being activated. That will slow down development - not stop it - but it will allow alignment (basically safety and ethics) to catch up. At the moment the AI is advancing beyond human control and there’s an incredibly limited time to stop it before we can’t anymore.

If we all die, who's going to repair them or maintain the national grid to power them?

That said, you might all want to be a little more polite to Alexa. 😆
