Potential 6 month warning until the end

So, we potentially only have 6 months until the end of civilised society and mass deaths. I’m terrified and sad

There are four main dangers we are currently facing with AI, OP is doom mongering about the 4th and least likely danger. The first three are happening now to a certain extent.

  1. The threat to natural resources - the data center sites, the energy needed, the water needed etc. Those are having a negative effect now and it’s only going to get worse.
  2. AI being used badly by accident - people believing and acting on misinformation from AI prompts because they don’t realize how often the AI makes mistakes, or makes things up, or the AI outpaces the user in an unexpected way (not for malicious reasons, again AI not understanding the remit is fixed)
  3. Humans deliberately using AI as a tool to manipulate, harm or kill other humans
  4. A supercomputer being advancing beyond human comprehension and just prioritizing its own survival at the expense of the human race. That’s the core of the OP’s panic but is still just a fantasy scenario at this point.

The bigger reason to slow down with AI right now are the first three dangers - we need ways to manage those asap.

I'm very concerned, I have two young children and another on the way. I can see it leading to financial crisis, internet outages, and potentially blackouts. All of these will mean deaths, deaths that don't need to happen. Most people hate AI, it's just taking jobs, electricity, water, and now it may be out of control enough to take lives.

My problem is our governments seem to be just sleepwalking into it with very rich men deciding the fate of the world. They claim a race with China, but I can only imagine China doesn't want it's own economy and people plunged into crisis? The CCP will be nothing of they too have no power, internet, or economy.

I don't know how serious this is. You have people on one side declaring total human extinction, and on the other dismissing everything as a PR stunt. In my view, even a small chance the people declaring catastrophic results should mean the global governments get their act together and take it seriously. I would rather they be over cautious over a PR stunt then do little and watch everyone die. What harm will international oversight and pausing AI do? It only has positives.

My only hope is that people in power, and the wealthy, have children they love too. My DCs are the most precious things in the world to me and all I want is for them to grow up and thrive. My worry is they believe they are too rich to fail and they can't see a world in which they don't survive.

I personally think the best way to combat it is to make the creators of AI responsible for their creation. Prison sentences, astronomical fines and international courts if their creation does something that, if a person did it, would range from a crime to terrorism. They are in effect handing a weapon over to nefarious individuals with poor safety regulations. So far we have heard about hacking attacks, biological weapon leaks, and chatgpt encouraged suicides and all they seem to do is shrug and carry on. I would imagine if their precious billions and their freedoms were at stake they might start to care.

I agree with a lot of this. On the people have children they love I think that’s important. Even if China are silent on this they too must want their dc to thrive rather than go for destruction.

JustSayyNo · 13/09/2026 22:20

Luckily I have good survival skills, so can go off grid. As long as no-one gets any infections that need medical care. That's even scarier than the idea of the spiders that will enter the shelter we'll have to build.

I refuse to worry about that which I cannot control. I'll just get on with the day to day as if one day will be much like the next, and whatever happens, happens.

Who are you including in that ‘we’? I use pen and paper daily; I much prefer it to typing on a screen or keyboard. I enjoy the physical process of putting ink on paper and I believe it helps my thinking. I get through quite a lot of notebooks (but I do buy recycled ones.)

Same here! There are loads of people who still use paper diaries and notebooks, of all ages.

Good. I don’t know about you but I’m sick with it all. If it isn’t the migrant fiasco, the high taxes, the high cost of living …. Everyday is pure 💩…

This is a good organisation to get behind. They are already pushing for AI regulation and you can email your MP as part of their campaign: https://controlai.org/

Top experts say AI poses an extinction risk on par with nuclear war. We can prohibit the development of superintelligent AI to prevent this risk

I originate from a country in West Africa which didn't lockdown countrywide and nor did their neighbours. The burden of Covid in Africa, including deaths, was much lower than in the west. There were short partial lockdowns in a couple of big cities early on. This is a country which strong on disease control, including testing and contact tracing, due to recent ish serious Ebola outbreaks in neighbouring countries.

Bear in mind Africa has a much younger population on average - median age very young, I think even under 20. Covid was always going to cause less of an acute burden there.

Actually AI has progressed much faster than any experts predicted. As per one of the articles above many predicted reaching super intelligence by about 2070-2100 - we’re on the cusp of it now

For anyone really interested in this subject, then read 'The Singularity is Near' by Ray Kurzweil. He explains how technology is advancing far more rapidly than anyone thought, and how it will continue to advance in shorter and shorter periods of time. (He puts it far more eloquently and in much more detail than I am capable of here).

BeWittyRobin · 14/09/2026 06:08

Oh dear god! 🤦🏻‍♀️.

Gerbilconda · 14/09/2026 07:14

If the worry is a machine being built that lacks empathy, doesn't it also stand to reason that it would also lack hatred? What would be the logic of the machine wiping out humanity? Enslaving us, maybe, but killing us all off? Not really a logical thing to do.

I guess the real worry is it being used as a weapon, but there are already people capable of catastrophic cyber attacks and pressing the button on nuclear weapons so the threat is not new.

Maintaining a level of preparedness so you're able to live off grid for a week might be wise but I'd not waste life being terrified of something that might not (and probably won't) happen.

Sartre · 14/09/2026 07:25

This is giving 2000 and 2012. Wish it was 2024 so I could say it has to happen every 12 years really. Also during the Cold War everyone constantly feared the Russians were going to nuke everyone. It’s just the human condition, to always require an existential threat to fear.

Gonners · 14/09/2026 07:50

😉 Did you name-change for that, @Sartre? True, though.

Potentially a similar logic to pest control? No empathy or hatred involved there, just removing something that's causing inconvenience or harm.

If anyone missed this. This AI safety action group allows you to contact your MP with the click of a button and they provide the email content. I have written to my MP asking them to undertake various measures to support control of AI during this super critical 6-12 month period. Please consider doing so too. It took me under 2 minutes

But politicians take no notice of the public and China, Russia, N Korea and the US will crack on regardless. Then we'll be left at their mercy, which of course they won't have.

You do realise all our AI is from the US right now don’t you. We use their systems.

No-one is asking for a ban on AI - people are asking for a slowdown and a ban on creating super intelligence - the point at which humans are no longer in control. And a point which gets ever closer

Trump said this today. If you don’t agree with that, say something.

“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!”
