So, we potentially only have 6 months until the end of civilised society and mass deaths. I’m terrified and sad

You do realise Jacob Coxon who made the warning is not ‘the head of Anthropic’ don’t you.

So many people on this thread don’t even know the basics of what they’re talking about!

You misread the article - it doesn’t say six months to total annilation of humans.

The six month figure was how long it would potentially take an army of rogue ‘bots’ to take over the Internet.

One of the other experts in the article said listenting to Jacob Coxon talk about the end of humanity by AI is like listening to your AC repair man talk about climate change.

FortnamsTea · 13/09/2026 19:22

If the people making shedloads of money out of AI are saying it's a serious problem / out of control then it's a serious problem and out of control.

I live in rural Scotland. The SNP are giving permission for huge numbers of vast data centres. They will drain more electricity than Scotland currently produces & needs for it's residents. They will drain rivers & destroy landscapes. Madness.
I do not use AI. I will write to my MP. I will demonstrate. It's all I can do.
Meantime I will get on with my life but the OP is correct to highlight this news.

1985goingbackagain · 13/09/2026 19:23

@Frombeyondi don’t know how old you are - do you remember all the doom stories about what was going to happen on the stroke of midnight from 1999 to 2000?

Jane143 · 13/09/2026 19:24

Frombeyond · 13/09/2026 10:53

It’s not one persons’ opinion. The head’s of Anthropic, Open AI and Elon Musk have said they agree. Not necessarily to the exact timeline. But that if something isn’t done we face the end of humanity in the immediate future. I think Musk said 20% chance by 2030.

Are people not reading the news about this to keep informed?

Surely if Musk is so well informed he could use some of his fortune to prevent this happening? If he can’t, who can? Certainly not us mere mortals going about our lives the best we can

You missed out the bit after that where he said he wasn’t wrong! The full quote was

"Not saying it's necessarily uninteresting or wrong per se but let's keep things in perspective and hear from the full range of expertise across the ecosystem!"

Delangue (owner of a rival smaller AI company) then joined with Anthropic and Open AI to ask for a slow down

I mean I experience other emotions too. Humans tend to be able to run the gamut of them no?

But I felt really sad when my ten year old yesterday told me what she wanted to be when she grew up. Then again today when she said ‘when I can drive a car I’m going to blast the music really loud with the windows shut and sing at the top of my voice.’

The thought of her never achieving that made me sad yes. Very sad.

She will achieve that, don’t worry. When I was a young mum I used to worry about my child’s future but they are doing ok x

You’re about the tenth person to ‘cleverly’ say this on the thread. But, as many people have pointed out - this wasn’t an issue as the global computer community worked together for the millenium bug fix. Which is all people are asking for now. If we had done nothing? The computers would have not worked and it would have been a disaster.

And I’m nearly 50 so yes I remember it

I find it strange that when our children are grown, they won't be the most intelligent species on the planet.

SkyLark79 · 13/09/2026 19:33

I give this absolutely zero percent of my mental energy, and that’s the truth. There’s so much worry on a day to day basis anyway; kids, work, elderly mum, friend with cancer, a sick older daughter repeating a levels etc etc, that if I then gave worry time to all the potential things that may or may not happen in addition, I would combust…
Chat GPT took about five attempts to be persuaded that Andy Burnham was the prime minister a few weeks ago. Of course there needs to be ethical control of it, but it’s certainly not something I spend time being anxious about.

Just switch an AI instance off is sadly a bit simplistic. The sheer rate of LLM usage makes direct human checking impossible, so any monitoring is 99% automated. Not that humans are foolproof, but automating the oversight often makes it easier to game. Even assuming a human watching every single output token, the design of LLMs means they can hide their “intention” in the activations without revealing anything unusual in the text that’s produced so bad behavior could seem to come out of nowhere and not be detected until it’s too late.

Making what I said a little bit complicated, I literally mean artificial intelligence requires a power source, which can be switched off until it can actually physically manage its own power sources, not electronically. It really can be controlled, I think people are mixing up robotics with artificial intelligence. These are different things

I know. I've saved up since I was in my early 20s, and lived a much more frugal life and did without a lot in comparison to my Millennial peers. Didn't do the whole travelling thing, didn't have a car or even have a smart phone until a few years ago (which is very unusual for a Millennial). I'm worried what's going to happen to those savings because at the end of the day they're just a number, but pouring all of it into a dump of a house isn't not appealing either (which is all I can afford). I've thought about buying a very small, limited amount of gold, but that is also not straightforward.

Edited

If you can afford to, then try not to put ALL of it into a single investment. The more diversified you are the more options you have if something goes wrong with one type of investment.

BeCleverViewer · 13/09/2026 19:36

Also, there was no millennium bug. Fix it feels like your reading about technology, but not necessarily understanding it. Though there was, you know that the year 2000 was a real right? It's a construct. The planet didn't actually start two thousand years ago. That I don't i'm super confused

BeCleverViewer · 13/09/2026 19:40

Frombeyond · 13/09/2026 19:01

Can you re-write this pls as it’s not very intelligible.

Yeah, it's not intelligible, but I can't really be bothered to write it out. Basically you seem under informed on this subject and overly worried, and I'd advise you just to read about it, but not from an ethics perspective because you seem to be confused. Um, and it's this whole this whole post is odd. It just sounds like the same sort of noise that was around when the millennium was happening. And it was just misguided, people talking about something that they didn't really understand you know, that people like myself have been working with Artificial Intelligence for nearly 15 years, and it's just that the public is becoming more used to it, that we're having these conversations, but it just confuses me the models. That you're using now. They were established in some cases 7 or 8 years ago. You need to like understand what's actually going on with the tool and hype around it, and also the fact that you're talking about business people and what they're saying about their product. It's always good to understand that intersection, just really do some reading. It's a really interesting subject

And you are completely ignoring the line within that quote which says

‘let’s keep it in perspective’

Your exaggerated title and doom mongering OP is out of all perspective in terms of what all these AI experts are saying.

Yes we can remove the power source but deciding when that needs to happen is difficult. Unless you advocate for turning off all LLMs preemptively?

cloudbabies · 13/09/2026 19:52

You guys seem to be forgetting kill switch of closing a manual valve on cooling tubes etc, it’s not able to take over a manual thing, it’s software. these are physical things that aren’t computer controlled so ai cannot take over

No, you are drifting away from the original proposition that artificial intelligence will cause the end of the world, potentially in six months. In a situation where an artificial intelligence instance has gone rogue, all you would need to do is switch it off. I do not understand what you mean by switching off large language models; that does not make sense. I do not think you understand this topic. It is really difficult to have this conversation because large language models can exist on paper. It is not the model you are talking about; it is the agents or the system. I am just trying to guess because I do not actually know what you are talking about, as you are not making any technical assertions. You are talking quite generically and broadly, and it is just fearmongering; it is really weird. It is really easy to find out about this stuff; you do not even have to use AI. If you are really interested in this subject and concerned, all you need to do is read about it. There's so many papers about this, and it's. It's such an interesting topic, but I'm more interested in where this fair is coming from. I don't blame or think that it's being driven by the public I. Definitely think i'm interested in the intentions behind the companies. For beginning to discuss it in this way

AI staff 'genuinely frightened' for humanity's future, ex-Anthropic researcher tells BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1kx0gyje9wo

Massive companies like LLMs want to keep themselves in the public eye to boost exposure for investor input.

Seems like a ruse to spend more money when they mention "we have to keep up with China..."

The article doesn't directly say how it's going to 'kill humanity'

The news wants to keep you fearful. Use discernment when it comes to mainstream media

BeCleverViewer · 13/09/2026 19:58

And just like, you know, to put this out there, most of the companies that made artificial intelligence based redundancies over the past eighteen months are rowing back fiercely.

BeCleverViewer · 13/09/2026 19:59

I say all this is someone who actually works in the field. I don't know, it is complicated. It does need to be controlled. It is quite dangerous, but it's more dangerous about how it interfaces with humans, rather than it's going to take over the world. Does it make sense? What makes it dangerous is what the human uses it for. And what is taught? And unfortunately, we are a strange species, so it was probably doing some heller, strange things. I also fundamentally don't trust elon musk, so whatever he's saying is probably not true

DistanceCall · 13/09/2026 20:00

Don't believe the hype (and this is hype – "AI is so powerful that it will destroy the world unless you let us do what we say we need to do and give us loads of money"). Anthropic has already suspended its IPO "to be responsible".

There was a good article in Vanity Fair a few months ago in which the reporter talked to an OpenAI employee who said he no longer wore sunscreen because he was sure AI would kill us all in the near future. He then caught other employees laughing with this guy about how he had given the sunscreen spiel to another journalist.

It's hype. There is a bubble, and it's going to burst, and it will damage the economy. But we aren't going to die because of AI. Keep wearing sunscreen.
