Potential 6 month warning until the end

So, we potentially only have 6 months until the end of civilised society and mass deaths. I’m terrified and sad

You're wrong, I've forgotten nothing as no expert predicted that. I remember them predicting a huge number of deaths which was then avoided by human intervention which moved the infection from pandemic to endemic.

Msybe @FairKoala is getting things confused with the anti-vaxxers who said the vaccine would kill us within two years?

Waitingfordoggo · 13/09/2026 15:21

I remember that prediction @TemperanceWest . I quite enjoy being able to remind my anti-vax acquaintances that I’m still alive and in good health.

Ooh, burn! I am mortified(!) 🙄

I made that remark because that specific sentence also happens to fit this context. Don't waste grey matter trying to make out I'm drawing any kind of further parallels, I suggest it could be better employed pulling your head out of the sand and educating yourself.

DontSingSusan · 13/09/2026 15:26

I completely hear you!
Very interesting to see the number of posters not taking it seriously. Maybe that's their coping mechanism.
I think it's good to stay informed but realistically as we can't do much about the situation, there's no point getting too worried about it. Easier said than done, I know!

I'm trying to stay as informed as possible but keep things in perspective and not get sucked into rabbit holes on it!

60% that seems unlikely. The IFR was much lower than that.

Up to 60% if people didn't comply with lockdowns or Governments didn't implement sooner.

Thankfully, other than a few people, who were shunned, most people did comply with lockdowns. So yes scare the population into requirements in order to get a lower death rate.

Lockdowns and quarantines were brutal in the past when it came to plagues or pandemics. Shoot to kill if non compliant l, banished into the wilderness as well.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 13/09/2026 15:26

Ok. We may not all die but plenty of things can happen that will change our pace and way off life drastically
so take that in for a moment.
Mass unemployment
food crisis
medical shortages
infrastructure damage such as water electricity gas
internet disruptions
that will mean no holidays no tv no supermarkets stocked well. Nothing running smoothly. Plane grounded Will prob has to introduce rationing
fighting in the streets
crime
riots

this is highly probable in the next decade if we dont stop
this. If it gets into the hands of Iran Russia North Korea poss China. Then what defenses do we have really !!!??

Why do you all think you know better than the ex head of ethics of Anthropic, the current CEO and current head of data science, the CEO of Open AI and the other dozens who’ve recently resigned saying the same thing?

Seriously, I’m interested?

If you saw how my company is improving delivery with the use of AI, you'd soon rest easy.

It could be a knock on the door and told to get out by people carrying weapons. It already happens in the West Bank.

You need to research how hard the Victorian era was instead of romanticizing it, it was brutal if you weren't wealthy...

What do want us all to say? What do you plan to do about it? I mean, there is also an infinitesimal possibility of an asteroid hitting the earth and wiping most of us out. Then there's also the possibility of bio-engineered pathogens unleashing a worldwide pandemic that kills us all off. Or the possibility of a full-scale nuclear war (quite possible in this volatile political climate). Or the very very real possibility of climate change making the planet unlivable for humans. What should/can we be doing about any of it?

Where are you getting that figure from?

Some countries didn’t lockdown they didn’t have 60%, nowhere close. Where did you see it?

Ihateboris · 13/09/2026 15:47

At least I don't have to worry about the fact I'll be fucked financially when I retire.

Eta. The countries that didn't have lockdown, can you name them?

All domestic flights cancelled globally helped do you not agree?

So people who know that AI hasn't the power to destroy humanity in the immediate future are burying their heads in the sand. Ok.

How do they know? If experts in the field are concerned, who are these people who "know" it's not possible. Why are they not open minded to wanting to understand the concern?

Ihateboris · 13/09/2026 15:53

LucyEleanorModeratz · 13/09/2026 14:38

I am stunned by the ridiculing responses to your thread, OP. I too am terrified. I imagine others are not only because they can’t grasp the enormity of the existential threat that ASI poses to humanity.

I implore the naysayers on this thread to read this profoundly disturbing and yet necessarily eye-opening essay:

Crikey..eye opening to say the least.

Nooo it's my birthday December 25th and grabby me wants my 1 day a year for presents, Boxing day's ok though.

😂Ok, let's postpone it til 26 Decemeber so you can have one final blow out

ifonly4 · 13/09/2026 16:01

So is it worth me still creating a mini stock pile to cover emergencies, as advised by the government? Just thinking, there's always going to be a bottle or three of wine stock piled here, do I make sure I'm up to date with drinking and enjoying it, or save for an emergency?!

Crocsforlife · 13/09/2026 16:04

Ok but what countries didn't do lockdown?

https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/196496/coronavirus-pandemic-could-have-caused-40/

So up to 60% reduction of viral spread in older people. Up to 40% reduction in the vulnerable population. If measurements were not enforced.

So I did mistake the figures. Getting a little mixed up with plagues, which has up to 60% death rates.

AI could indeed introduce a plague like situation.

Coronavirus pandemic could have caused 40 million deaths if left unchecked | Imperial News | Imperial College London

The outbreak of COVID-19 would likely have caused 40 million deaths this year in the absence of any preventative measures.

That’s hilarious and definitely hasn’t already been said on any of the multiple threads on this issue.
