How far can you walk?

Thread running at the moment about a child walking to school. People are not only seemingly horrified at the thought of the child walking, but also the mum doing the walk twice, as she is walking with him. I'm not asking about that Thread or child per se but you and your child.

In one go i can do about 5 miles, not fast, would probably take me 2 hours. Once I've had a rest I could probably then do the same again. I can easily walk 3 miles in about 50 minutes

In a day I usually walk between 10-12 miles. I have a young, working breed dog and I hate driving. The most I usually do in one go is 6-7 miles and that takes around 2 hours.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 13/09/2026 08:34

Similar to you and I’m late 50s.

I’m often stunned by how little some people walk or what distance they feel is ‘a long way’ … able bodied people obv.

user1492757084 · 13/09/2026 08:35

Two km walking with a child in about half an hour.
I could push a pram for three km before needing to rest.

TheChosenTwo · 13/09/2026 08:38

I can walk about 8 miles in one go, there’s a route I do from time to time from my house that’s really pretty and scenic. Dd sometimes comes with me (she’s an adult), ds (teenager) has come twice but the second time the cafe hatch wasn’t open and he wasn’t keen to repeat it if he didn’t have a treat or something on the way there/back!
Generally though I aim to walk for at least an hour a day outside, it’s not always done in one go but I prefer it if it is.
I’m early 40’s.

Crumpelstiltskin · 13/09/2026 08:40

Could do 10 miles I reckon. Haven't for a while as as I broke my leg and needed surgery earlier this year. At the moment I do about 3-4 miles of 'going for a walk' every day, plus walking about generally. It's very hilly where we are, so that usually involves an 400 - 500 ft climb.

Am early 60s so happy enough with that.

likelysuspect · 13/09/2026 08:41

I did 12 miles in total yesterday in bits but that was over ancient tracks and footpaths so wasn't as easy as pavement walking, much nicer though

BugJuice · 13/09/2026 08:44

No idea, I’ve never tried walking as far as I can until I can’t walk any more.
I could easily work 40 mins 4 times a day but the time that took would be prohibitive to me living the rest of my life and getting everything else I needed to do, done.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 13/09/2026 08:44

With the school run, its the time thats the isdue really, not the distance.

I frequently go on 3-4mikecwalks withput thinking about it. On a planned day trip, easily double.

likelysuspect · 13/09/2026 08:45

My issue is toilets to be honest

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/09/2026 08:47

3 -5 miles is an easy walk I do without thinking. On holidays and days out we frequently walk 10 - 15 miles in a day - sometimes with stops, sometimes not.

We don't have a car so walking is second nature.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 13/09/2026 08:49

I take baby wipes and a poo bag to put the used wipes in. Wee only !
And dh as a look out!
We go 3/4 hours when on holiday..

Exactly this. Yes, we can easily do 8 miles on a Sunday on a family hike when we’ve put aside the whole day for it, but every day of the week when you’ve got a million other things to be getting on with is a different prospect.

spring1979 · 13/09/2026 08:50

I usually walk 12 miles a day . I’m usually ready for a sit down at lunchtime more for something to eat and drink rather than a rest . I don’t drive so it’s my way of life I don’t even think about it .

NorthernDancer · 13/09/2026 08:51

I usually walk 3 or 4 miles a day at a speed of about 3 miles an hour. If we're away I can walk 8-10 miles a day and do that consistently over a week or so. I am 70.

aardvarkappeal · 13/09/2026 08:51

Regularly do 6 miles but last year did a 10 mile walk fine, took about 5 hours but with a stop for lunch half way. I was flagging after 9 miles, so reckon I could maybe do 12 max comfortably? I’ve been on MJ and lost a lot weight though, 2 years ago I couldn’t have ever imagined doing that far as the 6 miles walk we do would leave me with a sore back for days.

dizzydizzydizzy · 13/09/2026 08:53

Until 2021, I was running marathons so could probably have walked all day without an issue. I’m now late 50s and chronically ill and can’t reliably walk further than the bus stop which is about 200m away, although on a rare good day, I can do much further than this - maybe 0.75 miles. If I am in a flare up of my illness I cannot make it as far as the bus stop.

When my DCs were in primary school, I walked them 1.75 miles to school and then walked home again. In the afternoons, I did the 1.75 miles again and got the bus home. We couldn’t use the bus the rest of the time because the bus was very infrequent and there wasn’t one at that right time. For Dc2’s last 18 months in primary, the bus time table was changed and we had to walk home in the afternoons as well - so I was walking 7 miles a day Monday to Friday just for the school run.

HoraceCope · 13/09/2026 08:53

dog walking, slightly different as a long walk is over fields and stiles. and that is usually 3 or 4 km over an hour
i used to walk dog along a path 3 miles and that was fine

agree have not tried walking until i can't because that would be foolish!

Crosswurd · 13/09/2026 08:55

The laziness of some people (obviously disabilities aside) is crazy these days. Growing up without a car was great in hindsight as walking/cycling was ingrained into daily life. Have a car now but still walk whenever I can, DS sometimes moans as x, y, z drives wherever but he can walk a fair distance without struggling.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 13/09/2026 08:55

I suppose I could walk 500 miles, and maybe then 500
more?..

Rejoinedforthis · 13/09/2026 08:56

The furthest I’ve walked in a day is 27 miles. My just turned 4 year old has walked/run a Parkrun which is 5k - she’s walked for longer (we have dogs) but obviously stops to look at stuff, have a snack etc. We got rid of the buggy at 2.5 as we live in a small terraced house with no hallway so there was nowhere to store it and it did my head in 😂 so she’s a good walker out of necessity really as we walk a lot. I remember being surprised when her nursery were doing a trip to the duck pond which was a flat walk of a mile there, feed the ducks, a picnic and then the walk back - half the class didn’t go as they couldn’t do the walk, and this is 3 and 4 year olds! My mum doesn’t drive so still walks everywhere now in her 70s and she is so much fitter than my dad who is the same age but never walked anywhere and now barely moves.

I try to walk every day around a lake near me it takes about 45 minutes or sometimes I run.
I did a 28 mile walk for Macmillan in the summer, training for that I did regular walks of varying distance between 5 and 18 miles

CheeseAndSaladCreamSandwich · 13/09/2026 08:58

Physically? The most ive done in one day was 63 miles.

Practically? Would depend more on the need/time/logistics etc.

Thebinisrightthere · 13/09/2026 08:59

I actually have no idea. I'm fairly fit so could walk the same as the average person

NotMyRealAccount · 13/09/2026 08:59

I could walk all day if I had to, and have done lots of long distance walking events. The main limiting factor is that I get bored after a couple of hours and want to be doing something different.
