How far can you walk?

Thread running at the moment about a child walking to school. People are not only seemingly horrified at the thought of the child walking, but also the mum doing the walk twice, as she is walking with him. I'm not asking about that Thread or child per se but you and your child.

In one go i can do about 5 miles, not fast, would probably take me 2 hours. Once I've had a rest I could probably then do the same again. I can easily walk 3 miles in about 50 minutes

It used to be considered that 20 miles was a day's walk.

I could do that if I had too, but I'd be knackered by the end.

Early 60s.

I think most people can walk miles if needed but the majority don’t have the time due to things like work

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/09/2026 09:37

I walked to the fridge twice last night to refill my wine glass, actually it might have been three times.

But average walking speed is about 3 miles an hour so this is over 6 hours of your day walking.

6 hours a day walking would be fine if I didn’t have a job, 3 kids to look after, meals to cook and a house to run.

Once walked a marathon for charity, recently walking dogs 1-1 to 2 hrs a day 14 weeks lost 14 pounds!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/09/2026 09:40

I run about five miles a day and walk another four or so with the dog. People always act astonished as though this is some superhuman feat, but I'm retired so I have the time. I'm not breaking any records, just going steady.

But the 'oh my God, I can't even stagger five metres!' answers lead me to believe that people fear walking like they fear anthrax. We live in a beautiful part of the world with lots of footpaths and bridleways. They have no excuse other than that of time.

PlugUgly1980 · 13/09/2026 09:40

I can do 20 miles easily (but I‘m a runner) Kids are 10 and 12 but we’ve always walked. My kids walk 1 mile to school and the same back. We regularly walk on a weekend as a family, anywhere between 3-8 miles in an afternoon. During the summer or on holidays we walk miles and often in the mountains. This summer we were doing 10-13 miles a day with fells and mountains in the Lake District.

Who has said that? The majority of this thread is people claiming they walk 5 miles before breakfast.

Exactly. I get home from work at 6.30/7. I need to be in bed by 10 or else I'm exhausted. I therefore have three ish hours to do my housework, cook, spend time with my dc and dh, laundry and god forbid, rest. Even a half hour walk means I end up behind with all the stuff I need to do

It's people in real life who say that to me.

The key here is you're retired.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 13/09/2026 09:44

Crumbs just remembered me a friend stayed in Edinburgh one weekend.

Checked my step count and we had walked 35 miles -back and forward to the hotel /shops /pubs and back !

HoraceCope · 13/09/2026 09:44

i would rather walk than do housework tbh
however my dog is quite old so the walks are less and take longer

But I always ran a lot. I just used to get up early. Now I can choose my pace rather than having to fit it in to my working day (I do still wfh but obviously that isn't so time dependent).

It’s standard for MNs that’s why these threads are so pointless.

Miles, when I want to. School run is a different kettle of fish. One school was a lovely walk, one was a short walk but crossed a number of big roads and was unpleasant, current schools are down roads with no paths, so I refuse to take my life in my hands. Also add in weather, having to be there for the bell, going on to work afterwards and its very easy to see why people drive.

Ohreallyreally23 · 13/09/2026 09:48

I have done ultra marathons and walking challenges and do them semi-regularly, a few times a year.

The longest walk I have done was about 40 miles. Longest run slightly more. To be able to do that, I run and walk a lot.

It does surprise me how little some people move in general.

Sproutling · 13/09/2026 09:48

we regularly have a country/hill walk lasting around 3-4 hrs, including a coffee and snack break- probably around 8 -12 mils, often we'll do a walk 2-3 hrs 6-8 miles, in my 50's we did 'challenge walks' such as the Lyke Wake and Yorkshire 3 Peaks, now 65 so not as keen on having to meet time and distance targets. Spend 4hrs at a time on the allotment, and 4 hrs 2 x per week at a physical voluntary job, goodness knows how many miles they entail.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 13/09/2026 09:49

I've got a knackered knee so my limit is 6-7 miles depending on how hilly it is and general ground conditions. Dry paths are a lot less tiring than mud. I used to do more but if I push it too far now it just risks injury and then I'm hobbling around for a month

Time/health permitting I'll do a couple of walks of that length a week and then squeeze in some shorter walks on other days for an average of 25 miles a week.

Autumnwalks1313 · 13/09/2026 09:49

I’ve no idea really. I quite regularly walk 3 miles and it takes me about 50 minutes to 1 hour. I could probably walk further if I needed to.

I’m not very fit and I have a bad back I don’t really think the 3 miles is a particularly strenuous or unusual walk.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 13/09/2026 09:49

I wouldn’t know really, if you are not exceeding a certain level of exertion you could go on forever I think. Pre kids I would go on hiking holidays, I think my record was 16 hours walking with only one short break… but maybe I could have carried on if it hadn’t got dark…? Not like running where there would be a definite max (about 2km!).

That said I would not do a 60 minute round trip twice a day for the school run because I would get bored. So that’s a completely different limitation.

jumpingjohnny · 13/09/2026 09:50

The cut off for council transport to school is 3 miles for 8 years +. So an 8 year old is expected to walk 6 miles a day (plus movement at playtime etc).

We're trying to fight it as they're refusing transport for my teen with a physical disability and getting nowhere.

I could physically stroll all day long without tiring. Purposeful walking, maybe 2 hours in 1 go?

OneLilacHedgehog · 13/09/2026 09:52

About 200 metres and then I have to use a wheelchair

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 13/09/2026 09:53

I can walk a good few miles daily, and I’m disabled and walk with a slight limp. The more I walk, the more limber I feel. Yes it hurts, but I refuse to be held back by it.
