How far can you walk?

Thread running at the moment about a child walking to school. People are not only seemingly horrified at the thought of the child walking, but also the mum doing the walk twice, as she is walking with him. I'm not asking about that Thread or child per se but you and your child.

In one go i can do about 5 miles, not fast, would probably take me 2 hours. Once I've had a rest I could probably then do the same again. I can easily walk 3 miles in about 50 minutes

Honestly… miles and miles and miles. We hiked Macchu Picchu trail a year ago and that was almost entirely uphill for about 10 hours one day. That one was tiring especially because altitude means you’re not getting enough oxygen.

I walked about 15 miles around Tokyo once and didn’t really notice it. I find standing still much more painful than walking.

I can run for a bus and that’s about it though. I’m a sturdy plodder with endurance, not any good at fast movement.

It’s still 6 hours walking. I don’t have time in my day to walk for 6 hours, unless I take it off the 7 hours sleep I get.

No one's asking you to.

I was just commenting that it used to be a general expectation that a reasonably fit adult would be able to walk 20 miles if they needed to.

Not that they HAD to.

Depends where you live too I guess. I live in london...no idea where I would go to hike.

When we visit London we’d typically walk about 12 km a day, with also quite a lot at ‘museum pace’ which imo is more tiring than proper walking. Partly streets but a lot through the parks. Similar in other major cities.

I'm just catching up on these posts, only on page 4 but just to say this isn't a query about whether you have the time to walk, simply whether you can and how far

I walk an average of 12 km a day. No car. Today is Sunday = not heen at work. I have walked 8.3 km.

JoyousWriter · 13/09/2026 19:12

I've never actually reached my limit and had to stop.

Anything over about 13 miles makes my feet sore.

I presume I could walk all day, if necessary.

I can't run, though!

imanastronaut · 13/09/2026 19:14

My longest walking workout in my phone is 13km, in 3.5hrs walking time (plus a half an hour break in Costa!) for a sponsored walk. My longest hike is 13.27km in 3 hours 47 mins (plus a fifteen minute stop for lunch!). I have no sympathy for those who refuse to walk their children to school.

If wee stops don’t count as stopping then right now I think probably 10-12 miles. I could do more but I’d feel it. I did the 26 mile charity walk a few years ago, which would be the furthest I’ve gone in one day.
I don’t really need to walk too far day to day, but fairly regularly I take myself on a longer walk to make me move more. So I’d walk to the next town to go to a specific shop, for example, or to meet a friend. I also have a few friends who like a social weekend walk.

Ooops pressed post too soon!
I absolutely would not have been willing to walk 40 mins there and back for school drop off and pick up every day. Far too much time out of my day.

freezingmytoesoff · 13/09/2026 19:56

I did a charity walk recently which was 15 miles, and could probably have carried on and done roughly the same again - was enjoyable.
