As per the title, does anyone believe in ghosts?
I have had a couple of things happen in my life that were very strange. Has anyone else?
And it makes a nice change from talking about Bonnie Blue. 😀

I haven’t experienced being high in drugs, but I still believe it happens. That’s because there is actual evidence that it can happen.

With all the advances in technology, science etc don’t you find it strange that there isn’t a single shred of scientific evidence that ghosts exist? Nothing documented other than fanciful stories, all based around the same themes, which are based entirely on literature from the past. It’s the same with alien sightings. How coincidental that they all look like the ones drawn for movies half a century ago?

Think about it logically. If ghosts were real and you could see them, what’s the chances you’ve only seen a handful and many people have never seen even one? There have been 117 billion people who have lived on earth. Even if only half a percent of people become ghosts, that’s 585 million ghosts hanging around over time. Why do most of them come from a very specific time period? Has anyone ever seen a ghost of a Neanderthal? The beaches of Normandy should be swarming with ghosts, Ground Zero would be very crowded indeed, are there 1,000 ghosts bobbing about in the North Atlantic near Newfoundland?

People like to counter this with “oh but there are so many things that are unexplained” yes, then science investigates them and they become explained. We have the technology that allows us to actually see the moment the earth was created, and yet they haven’t ever been able to even suggest it might be a little bit possible that ghosts could exist.

If people feel comforted that old aunt Aggie is roaming the halls of her bungalow, fabulous, I’m happy for them. But to decide that people who choose not to believe in fairy tales, just don’t have the capacity to believe is very wide of the mark.

Did you know that bacteria was once thought of as science fiction? People then didn't have the microscopes to see them with. Just putting it out there...

My family swears blind they saw a leprechaun in my nana's garden. We were having fireworks in her garden when everyone except me and my dad (my mum, nana, aunt, grandad, and sisters) started pointing at air- just plain, blank air, all asking if anyone else could see the short, stout man in a top hat walking down the garden path with his cane.

To this day, they still all swear they saw a leprechaun walk out from behind the plum tree, hobble down the garden path, and vanish behind the shed. My dad and I were the only ones who couldn't see him.

They were not, to my knowledge, high, although I've always been very fussy around food and drink and wasn't eating and drinking the same things as them. I'm not entirely sure I trust that hot lemonade they were all drinking.

There isn't a single shred of scientific evidence to prove that they don't.

I don't necessarily believe in ghosts but I have had a couple of things happen to me that were odd.

I lost my Aunt when I was 15, she sadly had breast cancer that spread to her liver, and she passed away in her early 40's.

On the morning of her death, I woke up with a jump, a violent jump, that frightened me. I remember looking at my clock, 07.30 am. My Uncle called my Mum several hours later, my Aunt had passed away at 07.30 am that morning.

2001, I was moved from ICU and high dependency ward to a normal hospital ward. I'd been seriously ill with bacterial meningitis and septicemia. It was nighttime when I was moved from the normal ward to a small side room by myself. A nurse came to see me just before I moved to the side room, and I remember telling her that she looked like my Aunt who passed away. She smiled and told me that I mustn't worry as I would be OK, then left. Another nurse came over and I asked her about the red headed nurse, and told her she looked like my Aunt. The nurse told me that there wasn't a red headed nurse on duty.

I wasn't on any drugs at that point, and I know I saw this nurse. It's something I've never really understood, but put it down to an oddity!

Is there a difference between a dimension and a universe, as in multiverse? I am probably talking out my arse but I have seen multiverses mentioned on nonfiction tv programmes, and of course science fiction. Perhaps the PP's confusion lies there?

I'm not confused, I'm recounting what I heard. We were at a talk at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich about time & space, black holes and whatnot. Afterwards, the lecturer (a cosmologist) said if anyone has any questions please come over and he'd do his best to answer. While we waited our turn, we listened to him talking to someone else who asked about dimensions. That's when he said that they thought there could be about 11 of them, but it was cutting-edge research so far and they didn't know for sure. It was something to do with the universe missing a lot of matter that should be there, but wasn't, so the hypothesis was that there were other dimensions where that matter could be hiding. This was about 20 years ago so things have probably moved on since then.

Because it isn’t possible to prove a negative. Think about it.

I live in a rural area and was out cycling with DH one evening when we went past a field. Just through the entrance was a cart with several children playing on and around it and a man ploughing with two horses. At the time I just thought how lovely carrying on the old traditions. Asked hubby later if he had seen it but no he hadn’t. Then it occurred to me that if it was a demonstration then where were all the cars of people watching. Similarly if it was a for a film you’d expect vehicles around. Perhaps it was just a family who still like to carry on the old ways but I still wonder about it. I’ve lived in the area all of my life and one set of grandparents were farmers who ploughed with horses in the area.

Wow, that's really interesting, thank you. I wonder how much the thinking has changed with, is it, quantam mechanics/physics?

I don't believe in ghosts, as in "dead humans hanging around", but I do think that we don't fully understand our world and that things existing in other dimensions that we can't fully perceive may sometimes have an effect on our world and cause things we can't fully explain.

I used to live in a lovely old building, a huge mansion that had been broken up into several huge flats. Massive rooms, high ceilings, set back from the road with a private car park and garden. The rent was insanely cheap for how nice the flats were. I loved that flat and lived there for 5 years.

I also had depression during that time, and frequently had nightmares about someone trying to break in. The same dream every time, I'd be trying to close my front door with someone else on the other side pushing bag against me and banging on it. If I managed to "close it" the door would swing through the frame like it was double hinged and then I'd have to swap to pulling it closed. I'd get stuck for hours swapping between pulling and pushing desperately trying to get the door in the frame long enough to turn the locks.

After a couple of years my depression got worse, I started hearing voices and hallucinating, and ended up under outpatient psych care. My mental health got worse, and so did my physical health, and I started to need a wheelchair to get around. Since my flat had a few stairs leading up to the bathroom and bedrooms (built on a steep hill) I decided to move.

The dreams stopped immediately. So did the voices and hallucinations, and within 6 months of moving I was off my antidepressants and antipsychotics and discharged from my psych team not much longer after that.

I've never had any mental health issues since then and it's been well over a decade. I only moved a couple of streets away to a step free (much smaller and darker and more expensive) flat so it's not like I had the benefit of getting away to a new area and a new daily life.

I've refused to set foot in that old building since. The owners struggled to retain tenants and ended up selling it to the NHS to use as an assisted living facility. I'd be very interested to see the patient notes for people in that place and see if anyone else had similar issues.

Wow 😲 😳

You must be local to me. Do you know The Old Mill in Baginton?

A family member had an experience there and one of the staff then mentioned they have a ghost. I googled it and there is a few stories. I even found a woman who used to work there and another that owned the place once, they all had stories of things that they had experienced

If you are from Warwick, have you heard the story about Anne Diamond when she went to view a house for sale?

I grew up in Warwick yes :) I didn’t know either of those stories but just googled them, so interesting! Thank you

Even if some one put real proof out there, we'd never know for sure because of the advances in AI, they used to say the camera never lies, but now it does......frequently

My In laws live in the New Forest and have done since the 70s, they live close to Burley or the "witches village" as it's known, very odd atmosphere in that place I tell you, the air in the village feels "charged" if you get what I mean. Their house backs on to woodland and at night it's bloody creepy, many times they've seen strange lights coming from the woods. I'm sure there's black magic going on...

HellsBells13 · 12/09/2026 20:05

I do, the house I previously lived in for 16 years had lots of things happened, all coincided with my son hitting puberty and right up until we moved. .

I don’t believe in ghosts: but I believe the mind is powerful and suggestible and can conjour up all kinds of weird shit.

For example I can not tell you about the strange things i see when i have a particularly bad water infection...
I actually SAW my 15 year old son wheeling a crash cart towards me when i collapsed in my hospital room after my blood pressure dropped dangerously during urosepsis.
Plain and clear as day, there he was, in medical scrubs.
So I can see how some folks become convinced they have seen ghosts or spirits.
The fevered mind is a jolly strange thing, I have come to realise!

Just because we are bumbling around the woods in the dark doesn't mean that we are practising "black magic" (whatever that might be)!

More likely to be playing with the nature spirits.

Why not do it in the day then? Doing anything in the woods in the dead of night is bound to arouse suspicion! But there has been signs of black magic over the years in the New Forest, they've lived there for donkeys years...

No it's dense woodland not accessible by car, you'd have to walk deep in to the woods, I don't think doggers could be bothered with that when there's easier locations for them! I could be wrong though...

Yes. I grew up in a haunted house. Been in the family for years and still is. Most of the family (over several generations) have seen it. Although not a malevolent spirit I can’t say I feel at ease in the house.

Years ago my exH bought a car (an old banger basically, just to get him to and from work). He decided to take it for a run one Sunday am before the insurance came into force. I told him not to do it but he insisted and said he would take it for a run around the dock estate which would be empty.
Later he came back white and shaking.
He told me that he was driving along an empty road on the docks when a voice from the back seat of the car shouted "Noooo! Stop!". He promptly did an emergency stop and looked around but there was no-one in the car or anywhere near the car.
He took the car to a garage to put it up for sale on the Monday.
My exH was an atheist who didn't believe in anything.

Someone I know was driving along a dark country road and heard 'slow down'. He wasn't speeding but slowed anyway. Just after a lorry came round the corner. It was out of control on the wrong side of the road but straightened up. He'd have been wiped out. He was alone.

Too many people gawping like we are free entertainment.

Yes there have been stories of "black magic" in the New Forest for decades. It does rather depend on how you define "black magic" of course. I know from a reliable source of one group who practiced there but you'd find them very dull to watch.
