Today is the 25th anniversary of 9/11 do you remember what you were doing when you saw the news?

I remember every single bit of that day like it was yesterday. I had only visited the WTC 3 months earlier too. Thinking about the families and survivors and emergency workers today.

I was a teacher in a school nursery and a little while after I watched a boy build two brick towers and repeatedly fly a toy plane into them. He wasnt doing it gleefully, he was quite thoughtful so I think he was just processing what he had seen.

I was at home just sitting down to have lunch. My mum was in the kitchen cleaning and I ran through to tell her what had happened. Like many others we thought it had been a horrible accident until that second plane hit. 💔

It was years before I met DH but he was in the RAF at the time, stationed in the Falklands. He was making teas when he saw the news and had to interrupt the higher ups to tell them what had happened. Probably about the only time he could have got away with disturbing them like that.

I didn’t know about it until school pickup. Had to take the children to swimming lessons and the TV was on at the leisure centre…stood there absolutely immobilised with horror.
Cannot remember the rest of the day…feel sick and emotional just thinking about it!
I have been to the 9/11 memorial in NY and it is calm and serene. A beautiful place to visit and reflect.

Was sitting on the sofa feeding new baby. Put the news on they were talking about a plane crash. Then the second plane came and they realised it was deliberate. Never forget it.

I was in college in an English class. Another teacher came in, told our teacher who told us what was happening and ended the class.

I remember texting a friend because I didn’t know what the twin towers were and didn’t understand why it was a big deal. She told me to come to the media studies building which I did and they were all watching the news live on a big screen.
The big thing I remember is watching what looked like shadows falling and realising people were jumping.

I was unprepared and don’t think even then I fully understood how big the buildings were or how many people were lost/injured.

I watched the BBC News and saw the horror taking place. My son had just started school and it was pick up time.

My brother worked in the WTC and him and his 6 Groomsmen were all killed. Today is a day I will never forget and the world is not a better place since.

I miss him every day. I was at his wedding 4 years before. I am so proud of how my 3 tiny nieces have turned into the most amazing strong women and how my SIL stayed true to their wishes for their children.

Gosh 25 years ago

I was alone in my new flat moving in after coming back to uni. I’d plugged my tv on for some company and it was in the news. On every channel. I called my dad at some point and neither of us really knew what to make of it, that must have been before the towers collapsed. I’d not experienced feeling like that before, lost and overwhelmed. I couldn’t fathom how those in NY must be feeling.

I was at home decorating with Radio 4 on when they reported a plane crash. A little while later I put on the tv just before the second plane hit. I just sat on the floor watching the horror. Shots of people jumping from dozens of floors up, and the buildings collapsing, dust and rubble everywhere.
in the midst of this a couple of delivery men turned up at the house with some furniture, to find me in tears and shock. I said to them “you must come and see this on the tv, it’s horrific”. But they just looked at me as though I was a madwoman and left, rolling their eyes.
So much of the original footage has been banned/withheld since then that I think many people just don’t understand how truly awful and traumatic it was.

I was in the staff room after work when of the cleaners came in and asked if I had heard what had happened and then put the TV on. I remember asking where it was and she said New York and it was hard to believe it as the view looked so desolate. All that I could see was the dust and crumpled buildings. She then said this is the start of WW3.

I was taking my mum and my aunty to the local factory outlet as it broke on the radio. I remember having to ask them to shh so that I could hear the announcement.

I was 15, just started year 11. I’d come home from school and was watching Friends on sky. A breaking news thing appeared at the bottom of the screen but I pretty much ignored it. My dad came in from work and changed the channel telling me there had been a big plane crash in New York. This would have been maybe an hour after the second tower fell, and seeing those images completely blew my mind.
We watched the news coverage all night. My dad worked in the defence sector and security at his workplace massively increased in the days that followed.

About to go on the school run, it was frightening

I was 18 and waitressing in Pizza Express when it actually happened, one of the other staff mentioned it but it didn’t mean anything to me as I hadn’t even heard of the WTC. No smartphones then, I didn’t have one at any rate, so most of us were blissfully unaware at work. Then I watched the news around 6pm after work and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

I was boarding a plane from Jersey to London. In the chaos and emerging picture, we were allowed to take off but we were held in the air for a long time before landing. It was deeply unpleasant.

In Frankfurt and at home watching the news. We had moved there a week before and I hadn’t yet found a job.
Locals were terrified that the tower blocks there might be targeted next.

I was doing my ironing watching a film. When I finished I put the news on and saw it. I didn't know much about the WTC so assumed everyone had gotten out, then I realised the magnitude of it. Awful.

I was at work and remember someone coming back into the office at lunchtime and saying there’d been news of a plane crash on the radio while he was out in the car.

I was temping in London, sharing an office with someone whose brother worked at Canary Wharf. He said his building was being evacuated for fear it was also a target.

normally on a Friday the tube home was empty because everyone stayed out for a drink. That Friday it was heaving. Everyone wanted to be at home with their families.

I was stood ironing watching tv and thought it was a film. I watched it all live including the 2nd plane. I sat for hours watching it all unfold………left its mark on me for life. RIP everyone killed that day and the following aftermath x

Heard about it at school. I had just started year 7.

I now live in NYC and so wish I had at least visited the city when the towers were there.

I was in Cancun in a hotel with a majority of American guests . Was at breakfast with an American news channel on in the background. I will always remember the sound from us all as the second plane appeared. Lots of guests were from NYC , some had family in the emergency services. Some holidaying armed forces too . It was absolute chaos then I don’t think anyone moved from a tv for 24hours .
