Today is the 25th anniversary of 9/11 do you remember what you were doing when you saw the news?

I remember every single bit of that day like it was yesterday. I had only visited the WTC 3 months earlier too. Thinking about the families and survivors and emergency workers today.

I was on the phone to my late DH trying to get news (he was at home and Sky was on) when the second plane hit. I can still remember the way his voice sounded when he told me, hard to describe. A colleague was calling her partner at the same time and he was in tears (he was a professional pilot) Don't think I really took it in until I got home and saw the news, don't think it was possible to without seeing it and even then it still seemed impossible.

RIP to all the victims that day and comfort to those who loved them.

That Channel 4 documentary is very powerful.

I have watched it a few times but there will be a new one on tonight in honor of the 25th anniversary. Same name.

There are many good shows to watch. "The Road to 911" series is also very good and informative and sometimes angering. I actually learned a lot from that one.

I think people got confused when the man that did film the first tower being hit released the footage, it snuck into people's memories and became real to them.

I will have to find some write-ups of those units. I would love to watch them climb, yet I also think it's a very personal experience for them and I don't want to intrude on that.

it does seem like a recent event in some ways but then i think about how different life was - silly things like no
social media, no netflix etc so most people watching main channels, dont think i had even been on the internet at that point.

I was on holiday with DH and a very young DD (she’s 27 now). A fellow guest stopped me in the corridor and told me what had happened. I didn’t tell DH, I wanted him to have a nice afternoon playing with DD before he knew about the horror - we went for a swim and I kept his attention away from the TV screen visible from the pool.

Yes. Was at home from uni & watching diagnosis murder on BBC 1 in my bedroom when it was interrupted with live footage of the aeroplane going into the first tower. Watched for a few minutes before going downstairs to see my dad. We sat watching the footage in the lounge for hours before I had to go to work.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

I was living in Southern California so I was asleep. My landline rang and I figure it was my mother forgetting the time difference again. Then it rang again immediately. My then husband jumped out of bed to go get it. I don’t know why, but I turned on the tiny tv we kept in the bedroom and saw the second tower falling.

we spent several hours watching coverage and worrying about people we knew in the wtc and pentagon. After a bit I got worried work would mad I had not called in, so I tried to call my boss. I was redirected to an operator who told me my office was closed and I should call back tomorrow to find out when we might reopen.

After many hours of staring at the tv, we decided we needed a break and decided to go out and get something to eat. Everything was closed. We finally found one fast food place open. It was filled with FedEx and ups drivers. None of them could make their deliveries, but the companies had not dismissed them for the day yet.

I’d switched on Radio 4 in the car and, half-listening while driving, was under the impression that a ‘War of the Worlds’ type drama was on - it turned out to be live commentary on the collapse of one of the twin towers. I can remember now, the realisation dawning that it was news coverage, and how shocking it was…

We were four days married and two days into our honeymoon in the Maldives. To sit at the beach bar in the Indian Ocean and watch the terror unfolding on the screens in the US was completely surreal.
25 years. Just had our silver wedding anniversary.

Yep. I'd just got home from secondary school and it was all over the news 😔 I clearly remember it happened about 3-3.30pm UK time. I've just turned 40 and can't believe it's been 25 years ❤️

Ah according to Google it began about 2pm UK time. So either my teachers had no idea because we were in lessons, or kept it from us really well...

Yes I was at work when a colleague came and said do you know a plane has crashed into the World Trade Centre - but I didn't know what it was. The internet was shaky and we were trying to get on the BBC website and an email went round telling us we were crashing the network trying to get news.

I was working near Heathrow and there were rumours for a while of a fifth plane being missing and we were worried it would be aimed at us as the nearest tall(ish) building to Heathrow.

We were sent home early too - I think I watched footage on a TV in a shop window on a detour to the railway station.

I remember early September being quite a happy time because England had not long beaten Germany 5-1 at football in Munich and there was a bit of a feelgood factor as before that England always lost! It was only a qualifying game, not part of a tournament. And then. 9/11.

It took a while not to think of planes as sinister weapons after that.

Also, a few weeks later, we had a fire drill and the emergency exit wouldn't open at the bottom of the stairwell and I remember thinking thank goodness it was only a drill and not a real fire/incident.

Pregnant with DD and looking after 2 year old DS whilst constantly trying not to throw up. He’d just gone up for his nap and I was settling down for a quiet few minutes to gather myself before the next round of cars and tractors when I switched on the TV and saw it unfolding. I phoned DH at work and told him to find a tv to see what was going on.

The showed the aftermath of the first plane but not the impact. That is probably what people remember.

I was in a last lesson of the day English GCSE class. A student called Ben said a plane had gone into the World Trade Center. I did not know then what it was or that it was in New York, or why and how that would change the world. Later, I would wonder how he found out at school - perhaps someone from outside of school text him.

Dropped home from school around 4pm - Dad in garage, turned on the BBC and there it was. The TV, as I am sure it was for many, I remember being on for hours days after that. I remember my mum coming home later, the shock and the questions, buying all the paper the next day as if that would help understand it somehow.

I worked in a bank at the time and a customer came in and told us all it. We couldn’t believe what we were hearing and didn’t really understand what was happening. Then saw about it properly on the news with a horror and disbelief.

I was 11 at secondary school
and remember at 9.50am in the morning finding out but i didn’t understand any of it and didn’t appreciate the seriousness of it. I went to my friends after school and remember her parents glued to the news watching it all. I remember we were watching a kylie minougue music video on tv and my friends dad came downstairs and turned it over for the news.

There are so many heart-breaking stories from the day that I’m still discovering, from the F-15 pilots at Andrews Air Force Base who were scrambled to take down United 93 knowing it was a kamikaze mission: the F-15s took too long to arm with weapons so the decision was made to effectively ram it out of the air. In the end it turned out that the passengers had already fought back and the plane had come down before the F-15s were even in the air, but the pilots still scrambled and got their planes up with the intention of not coming back.

To the post I read today titled “The Lady the Pink Suit” where a man who was in a building near the WTC described seeing a woman in a pink suit make the decision to jump from one of the Towers and watched her fall. Describing it as watching her before she made the choice “with death behind her and below her” and how he doesn’t know who she was but that he thinks of her every day. It’s written by a man called Mike Patterson and it’s gone viral on Facebook so easy to find if you wish to read it.

It's still so fresh in my mind. I watched some old footage of it being reported live last night and my heart was beating with anxiety.
At the time I was a teenager watching it live with my then boyfriend, in disbelief. Later on at work, a customer complained that we weren't showing the usual channel 4 teatime programmes instead of the news!? I was dumbfounded.
The world changed that day; that for me was the end of the good times I'd known and grown up in.

The story I've heard was the nearest QRA/Battle flight with live missile armed aircraft sat on 5 or 10 minutes readiness was somewhere like Langley AFB...simply too far away to get airborne and engage United 93 very very quickly.

So whilst they were being scrambled some aircraft, F-16s and/or F-15s, I think possibly already airborne in the area unarmed on training flights were told they had to bring the airliner down somehow, which would have meant ramming.

I was 13, never knew about it until after school when I walked down the road and someone shouted, America is being bombed, America is being bombed. Got home and I watched it all night. I was very upset about it, more so than my friends at the time. I’ve always been very empathetic and I remember ruminating about it for a very long time.

I was out on my horse in the woods with my sister. A really nice day. Watched the news then I came home with my sister. So weird days.

Office gossip at first, nobody really gave it much thought and continued with their work, nobody could get on the Internet to check either due to comms issues. It was only when I finished work and was driving back home the reality hit when listening to the radio. Saw the news immediately after getting in and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Everyone you spoke to was stunned into silence.
