What makes you feel like you look good?

I am in a rut and am fed up. For years I have given up on trying to look nice. Now I just go about my life feeling and looking like an ugly slob. It’s been so long, I’m not even sure how to make an effort. What do you do that makes you feel like you look nice, put together, confident?

God knows OP. I look like a bag lady most days but I just don’t have money for clothes, nice hair, make up.

RiverRed · Today 10:48

A blow-dry for my naturally wavy/frizzy hair. Lasts a few days and I always feel much more put-together as a result.

dontcookwontcook · Today 10:49

As bad as it is, a sunbed / slight tan. I’m quite pale and can end up looking like corpse bride so I need a bit of colour

Cuppachuchu · Today 10:50

Shower with something that smells good. Body lotion.Curl my hair, light make up and a spray of perfume. Earrings. Neat nails.

Honestly, I felt the same all through my 30’s so I lost weight this year… 2st. I’m back to my pre baby weight (8st and size 8) and I feel so so much better. I had to buy a whole new wardrobe tbh so I curated a wardrobe that I just adore! I find I just take care of myself more now and I love myself a lot more. Maybe write down your top 3 things that bother you and find a way to tackle them? If I can do it then you can! ❤️

A good hair day and one where my stomach isn't too bloated from bread or noodles etc

I have very frizzy & wavy hair. The only way I know to care for it is to not brush it… which means it’s always just scruffy 🤷‍♀️

I also have limited money for treatments such as nails/hair:, good skincare etc

A good night's sleep, a dod of tan drops in my moisturiser and if ever I think 'should I wash my hair or leave it a day?', the answer is always WASH IT! 😄

frecklejuice · Today 10:53

My hair, it’s the only good thing about me 😂

TokyoSushi · Today 10:54

Cut & colour, gel nails in a classic neutral colour, a bit of make up. But mainly shower & hair wash every morning as I start the day, so always spotlessly clean and in clean, ironed clothes.

I love this! I’m mid-30s and have struggled with my MH for a very long time and becoming a parent just lost myself completely. I feel like I’m out the other side of that particular pit but need to work on my own image for my self-confidence. Does that make sense?

would a boob job help? Serious question. Hated my non-existent chest forever.

I'd turn it on its head and say what makes you feel you don't look good, OP @BlueBayBic ?

You can make frizzy/wavy hair look lovely for under a fiver, mousse, curl cream and a hair dryer. Look up some curly girl tutorials.

BlueBayBic · Today 11:01

@DeftGoldHedgehog I don’t know… I hate all my clothes. They’re always clean (until I inevitably spill something down myself by mid-morning) but they’re shapeless and boring. My hair is untameable (but will look into curly girl as @5682Jhd suggested). I hate my glasses, they sit wonky on my face and always slip down my nose, but don’t get on with contact lenses. I no longer wear makeup (mascara always smudges and I hate it) and have a very round non-defined face. Just look scruffy.

If your mascara smudges try a tubing one. I like Skytubes by mabelline.

other things which make me good;

leave in conditioner for 20 minutes then rinse and blow dry. I have frizzy curly hair. Fingernails; Nails Inc Glowing my way. It’s a translucent pink that makes your nails look super healthy in one coat. It also dries in 5 minutes. It’s a wonder product.

A well cut jacket eg from Reiss outlet. A good bag and a good coat. Then work on natural fibers, good nails, skin and hair and voila! But the most important thing is to have a sparkly demeanor and a kind word for others.

Ps I am sure the OP is being way too hard on themselves and has at least one beautiful thing about them inside and out. Be well x

Exercising - makes me feel better and my upper arms have improved
Boots fake tan drops in my moisturiser at night
Neat nails
Neat hair (I have to use straighteners on mine as it’s frizzy af but it takes 2 mins to do the top layer on a morning)
Brightening concealer in inner corner of my eyes and curled lashes (warm them with hair dryer) and bit of brow pencil

Skincare doesn’t have to be expensive. A cheap hyaluronic acid serum, a glycolic acid toner and a cheap moisturiser can work wonders if you currently do nothing. Boots, Superdrug and supermarkets have cheap ones and so do pound shops, Home Bargains etc.

Hair-wise, a conditioner and then wave/curl cream combed through with a wide tooth comb before scrunching and either leaving to air dry or drying with a diffuser will help if you have waves and/or frizz.

Thank you!! Will check out both products ☺️

Also clothes in natural fabrics.
cotton, linen, no polyester. Uniqlo and M&S have affordable stuff even primark stock a lot of cotton and linen now. avoid leggings unless you’re exercising or they are good quality, leggings under a tunic or dress is not a good looks.

❤️ I am (try to be) a good person! Always trying to do the best I can for those around me. My self-esteem is much better than it used to be, but my confidence in my appearance needs a boost.

OP posts:
PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · Today 11:20

Bothering to make an effort makes me feel better. My efforts are probably lacklustre compared to other people's, but I feel better when I've bothered to do my hair and put on my favourite clothes etc.

BlueBayBic · Today 11:20

Yes to natural fabrics! I absolutely hate those clothes that proudly pronounce “I used to be a plastic bottle!” - who wants to wear a plastic bottle?! Nasty things.

I woke up this morning feeling like a troll 😅
I have really frizzy hair so it only ever looks presentable maybe 4 days a year unless I wash then scrunch with a ton of product. I have also never been blessed with nice skin so I'm nearing 40 with spots and patchy looking skin.
I try my best to do my hair and make up but I just don't have the time before the school run!
