How much sleep do you get a night, and…

Is it enough?

if you happen to be a working mum, with a 9-5 job (or there about) I’m particularly interested.

i get 7-8 hours a night (typically go to be around 11pm and up at 7am. I usually sleep quite solidly but mornings are PAINFUL!

I can’t seem to wake up properly at all, my husband basically has to drag the covers off of me but I promise I don’t do it on purpose, I just fall back into a deep sleep without realising it!

I think I need about 9 hours a night, or maybe I would be fine with 8 if I didn’t have to get up until say, 8am. it’s like my body is just not programmed for ‘awake’ at 7am 🙈

it’s hard to go to bed any earlier as there’s dinner/washing/club runs/kids showers and beds etc to organise.

I think getting 7-8 hours solid sleep a night SHOULD be enough….bit it doesn’t seem to be??

i have 2 DC (10 and 12) who were terrible sleepers. DC1 was an hourly waker until about 1yo and didn’t sleep through the night until she was 6 so I used to be well used to broken/short sleep and seemed to manage much better in the morning than I do now 🫣

I would be bed much earlier - 10 at the latest

Nicflowers82 · 03/09/2026 16:01

I am exactly like this OP. I think I’m a lighter sleeper ever since having kids (now teenagers ) but also I used to be a morning person and then for some reason since Covid I am not anymore! Any wake-up before 7 feels like I’ve been cheated 🤣. I try and be up at 7.15 and try and be in bed by 11 , which should be enough but often feels like it isn’t. I do try and get up at a similar time at time at the weekends so that my body clock isn’t all messed up, and if it’s a busy work day / office day the next day I’ll try and be in bed by 10.30.

mindutopia · 03/09/2026 16:04

I usually get about 8.5 hours, sometimes more like 7.5-8. Usually 10:30/11pm to 7am. Sleep is a big deal for me though. I go to bed and get up roughly the same times even on the weekends. I have zero desire to stay awake past 10:30pm for anyone, not to spend time with Dh, not for a night out, not for a friend’s birthday, nothing short of an emergency will have me not in bed. I have cancer and several chronic illnesses and generally yes, I feel it’s the right amount of sleep. I do sometimes feel fatigue, but that’s because I’m not 100% well, not because I’m not getting enough quality sleep. I live a pretty healthy lifestyle though. I don’t drink much caffeine, don’t drink alcohol, eat well, low stress (apart from cancer and illnesses 😂).

I currently vary between 3-4 hours a night but I am 38 weeks pregnant.
I have two other children who are 9 and 1.
Pre-1 year-old I slept around 6-7 hours a night.

You can also feel lethargic and groggy in the mornings if you’re having too much sleep, have you trialled having 30 minutes/an hour less than you usually do?
My partner is super hard to get up on the weekends because he has extra sleep.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/09/2026 16:09

I get about 6-7 hours which probably isn’t enough really but I can’t seem to make myself go to bed any earlier than 1. I work part-time and my children are young adults so I do ‘get away with’ being a bit tired most of the time because my daily life is not very stressful or tiring.

chillap · 03/09/2026 16:20

I’m a 10.30 to 7. Annoyingly I am physically incapable of having a lie in. Even if I have a late weekend PING eyes open at 7am.
Without getting all mumsnetty, your 12 year old should be showering and bedding down without much assistance now. And with two of you sharing the rest you could definitely get in bed for 10. Why not try it and see how you feel?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 03/09/2026 16:29

Bed usually at midnight and up at 5.30am. I'm permanently tired. If I have time, I love a sneaky nap but that's about once a month. Weekends I get to sleep in until 8ish. Bloody hate early mornings.

Wishitwasstraightforward · 03/09/2026 16:29

I currently get about 6-7 hours a night. I feel tired when I wake up. However, over the years I’ve come to realise that I always feel tired and groggy when I first wake up even when I’ve slept for 8 hours. It always takes me a good 30mins to an hour to feel a bit more awake.

In my case I’m unconvinced that I will ever wake up feeling anything other than groggy regardless of how much sleep I’ve had.

Having said that, this thread is making me wonder if I’m wrong so I’ll be following with interest.

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 03/09/2026 16:32

I don't have kids but I generally get about five hours' sleep during the week, about seven at weekends.

Bjorkdidit · 03/09/2026 17:27

Same here @AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder , it's a myth that the child free have 8 hours of blissful sleep a night.

LadyJ129 · 03/09/2026 17:42

5-6.5 hours normally. I feel like shit most of the time but I can get by ok on 6-6.5. On the odd occasion I get 7 or 7.5 I feel incredible, it’s rare though.

PetiteParakeet · 03/09/2026 17:46

Are you tired in the day? Or is it just the transition from fast asleep to ‘awake and functioning’ that you struggle with?

moppety · 03/09/2026 18:11

6-7, occasionally 8. Before kids I believed I needed 9 every night but turns out I don’t. And tbh I don’t feel any more tired on 6-7 than when I did routinely get 8-9 so I am more productive now at least!

It might just be more of a morning transition issue than amount of sleep though if you’re fine the rest of the day and evenings once up.

PearlsTeapot · 03/09/2026 18:31

I am a massive sleeper and go about 10/11 hours a night! I'm always asleep by 1030 and wake up at the last possible minute the following day, today I had work at 10 and got up at 930.

I'm always tired. Sleeping any less makes me useless. I can easily sleep 12 hours straight.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 03/09/2026 18:44

4-6, unless I am ill, or it's my weekend off.

I go to bed at 9/10, but insomnia is not very helpful. I usually wake up every other hour, and always at least an hour before my alarm goes off. I wouldn't mind, but it goes off at 3.45! (I work on a dairy farm, so very early mornings are a must).

I am almost permanently tired, but have never slept very well in my life.

sausageth · 03/09/2026 18:52

I'd never get anything done if I had 9 hours sleep a night. I'm always tired first thing but that's what coffee is for.

menopausequeen · 03/09/2026 18:56

I get about 4.5 hours. It’s not enough but I struggle to stay asleep passed 4am and although I go to bed at 10pm and fall asleep quickly I’m wide awake midnight until about 1/2 am. Then back awake at 4/4.20 am. I just can’t seem to break this pattern

TheChosenTwo · 03/09/2026 19:03

About 4 and I’m very lucky if it’s all in one stretch!
usually nod off between 1-2 but eyes ping open, often at 4:45 but sometimes at 5.
It’s enough in that I don’t struggle getting up for work and I don’t feel fatigued but I don’t think it’s really ‘enough’ sleep for sufficient rest and recovery time for my body. But it’s obviously okay really as I’m okay!
sometimes if I have a free hour on a Saturday afternoon I will have a little sofa nap 😂

MrsClattenburg · 03/09/2026 19:04

6-7 hours on a weekday, 7-8 on a weekend (but very broken sleep if we've been out drinking) I usually sleep between 11.30-6.30 or 5.30 if I'm up for the gym before work.

Add in two teenagers who go out/in at all hours and a DH who is up at 4.30 for work and I'm generally pretty sleepy come night time. I love my evenings though and don't stick Netflix on until 10pm which probably my downfall!

Sofanal · 03/09/2026 19:12

I get about 5 hours and that's fine for me. I go to sleep at 2am and wake at 7am. I've always been a night owl and like having the quiet early morning time to get stuff done, studying or reading or batch cooking. I'd really struggle to fit everything into my routines if I went off to bed at 10pm.

JaspersCarrott · 03/09/2026 19:15

I've not slept well for about 10yrs. A frozen shoulder 4yrs ago didnt help.
I'm usually in bed by 10, no problem falling asleep, but wake at least hourly, and sometimes after 4am I struggle to get back to sleep at all.
I'm lucky that i work part time, and manage to get through my days at work - but its hard

dingodan · 03/09/2026 20:19

Wow I wish I got this much sleep, I wake at 6am but really only get into bed at 11pm. I just can’t fit everything in.

Cooking from scratch, extracurriculars, some exercise, dcs homework/reading, bit of tidying/admin take up most of my weekday evenings.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/09/2026 20:22

I get up at 6.30 for work. And I struggle. I should be lights out going to sleep at 10.30 but it’s more like 11 and last night I was finishing my book so 11.30. I definitely feel better when I get to sleep at 10.30 and since I’ve started perimenopause I’m waking up in the night as well

BretonStripe · 03/09/2026 20:28

I'm similar to you OP, bed around 10.30, sleep around 11pm, wake up at 7am...but during holidays I can naturally wake up around 9am. I need 8-10hrs a night and always have done. Luckily I know work in a school so term-time, and DC are teens, so although I have frequent bouts of insomnia where I'm wide awake 2am - 5am, I can catch up during the holidays.

JustFrustrated · 03/09/2026 20:29

I’m usually 11.30-6 with a lovely little random wake period.

Dont struggle with transition or my alarm, as in I’m
out of bed awake and not yawning.
