Just mucked up with our holiday booking, and it’s cost us a few hundred. I’m so annoyed with myself as we were literally scraping the top end of our budget without this mistake.

please share your recent expensive mistakes to help make me feel better! Or at least help me get things in perspective!

Can't find receipts for expensive lampshade that doesnt fit so unable to return it . I do have delivery order documents etc, but no go . Other light fitting unable to do so have to get electrician .

Earlier in the summer, we were visiting friends in Portsmouth and I booked a premier inn type accommodation for DH and me. We show up, no booking available… after much checking I’d managed to book Plymouth, so that was £160ish for a couple nights.

Dh had booked man & van to move DD’s uni stuff from flat A to flat B. Gave my email address and number as i’d be up there on day.
A few days ago they are messaging (whilst I was in a meeting) saying they were coming that day.
DH is adamant he booked correct date. I had received a confirmation email i’d not seen as it wasn’t even on my radar yet.
So money wasted as too late to cancel and had to re book with a new company. Hope men doing move at least got some of the money and a few hours off.

Ah a friend of mine did very similar, he was trying to get to ashton old Rd but roadworks got him turned around and he ended up in picadilly Gardens , pulled o er to try and sort himself out but stopped on double yellows then drove in a bus lane so got 2 fines then very nearly down the tram lines that go back under picadilly train station .
He now gets a taxi or bus if he needs to to that area !

I let an idiot replace my bath with a shower and had to have the entire shower redone 4 years later

Got a parking ticket. Paid, was back in the right time. Turns out it’s a part of the street that residents only and the other part is residents/ringo… I think. I park there every day for nursery drop off, but this time I thought I’d managed to nab a spot closer :( I feel very hard done by.

came back to car, saw it, sighed, removed it and then for an insane reason popped in to a newsagents right by car to pick up a lottery ticket…. Came out and had a second one.

and didn’t win a bean

this was last week, claim has gone to travel insurance, but getting the response from SW trains is currently the issue to provide proof.

Had there been an announce ment at any of the stations prior I would have got in a cab

There’s a site which shows the actual times trains arrived…. Quick google will reveal.

I phoned three local roofers for a garage a few years ago - first one was clearly on cocaine and wanted £1000 upfront so I managed to get him out of house, second one quoted too high, third one wanted £500 upfront - did a shit job, I then had to pay an extra £800 for someone to put extra supports in. Later found out that second one was son in law of third one. I felt so angry at being manipulated - they were actually quite scary so didn’t feel that I could review them on check a trade as they knew I lived alone.

I nearly got caught out like that by the Tui website. I kept comparing dates, then suddenly found dates that seemed a bit cheaper so clicked on them. Did a final check before I clicked Continue. Spotted the buggers had defaulted to the current month! Since then I've noticed Tui often does this so I now triple check.

Both Tui and Jet2 default to room only or B&B only if you're booking All Inc, so watch out of that too.

Booked a posh haircut for me and both my girls. Then checked on the morning of and realised we all had nits. So had to cancel. They still charged us the full fee!

This wasn't a mistake as much as a desperate action with bad timing. The benefit of hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Been ill for over a year (serious stuff), I needed an iron drip as severely anaemic (and will need IV drips for the rest of my life and GP asked for it and certain dept declined so he referred me to another but they said they had a 6mth waiting list to see a consultant and that would be a prelim appt to assess the need (even though I ticked all the boxes). I felt terrible and couldn't contemplate waiting another 7-8mths so I looked into getting it done privately.

Paid for it and had it done last week - cost me £800, got told by GP not to cancel waiting for IV drip on NHS as by the time it came around in 6 to 8mths I would need another drip so I might manage having to feel sh*t for months whilst they assessed me.

Today a private clinic rang me, I had been referred as an urgent case by the NHS for the IV drip and could I go this Saturday. But I had it last week. They are referring it back to the NHS on the ground I no longer need it. But I am now going to need them for the rest of my life and , next time I will have to wait until I feel really sh*t again, before I get referred - its a vicious circle.

The system is screwed.

Just wanted to say thank you Forgottenmyphone...I think these kind of posts are really cathartic...of course I can bore my real life friends but they don't have the same choice to scroll on by.

Going back a few years now but we spotted a bed from IKEA (£40-bargain!)

It was so our granddaughter/guests could stay over so would be lightly used at best (ds,his wife and granddaughter live 140 miles away but stay over at ours if they are going away as we live closer to the airport)

Bought the bed,thinking 'that's cheap for a bed-£20!we must have read the price wrong...'

Get the bloody thing home,of course it was cheap,we'd bought the frame and not the slats to go with it!

We hadn't seen the small print to say both sold separately

Back we go for the slats and got them in the boot and dp drove us home

Halfway back we ended up in a car crash,nobody hurt (thankfully) but car in a bad way

Insurance paid out but the excess was 1k

And to top it all off,the £40 bed is in pieces and stored in our attic-never been slept on as ds,his wife and granddaughter haven't slept over at ours as they've not gone abroad since we bought the bloody thing

The mistake was decades ago but it's still costing me more and more.

The mistake was not looking when I ran across the road to catch a bus age 13. Was hit by a van and knocked out my front teeth. Took years to save up for implants which I finally had age 30 at a cost of £8k. It was very tricky and involved a cemented in bridge/gum line as I had lost a lot of bone in the meantime.

I always knew the bridge and possibly the implants would need replacing after 15-20 years. Started looking into this recently and it's actually got hugely more complicated as I have gum disease trapped under the cemented bridge and have lost more bone. So I need a series of specialist treatment including periodontal surgery, a bone graft, a soft tissue graft, new implants and crowns (and more, I wont bore you). Total cost likely to exceed £30k, lots of time, discomfort and inconvenience. The only alternative is waiting for the existing implants to fail and then having dentures.

I could cry. One momentary mistake and it's still costing sooo much money and I've never been proud of my smile. Maybe one day when I have my new 30k teeth!

I have been SUCH a careful road crosser ever since!

You don't need to keep the fat jab pen in the fridge, you just need to use it within 30 days, so it's not wasted.

Booked a return to Istanbul with BA.
At the end of the weekend, we tried to get the bus back to the airport but waited in the wrong place. As we were then cutting it fine for time as traffic was terrible, DP decided we should get a taxi.
We were gridlocked for over an hour and still miles away so he got me to check whether the flight was on time.
At which point I discover that the flight was not showing up.....as it was leaving from the other Istanbul airport on the opposite side of the city.
So, that was around £100 of taxi, a hotel for the night and new flights for the following day.
And the whole trip was originally planned to see a Robbie Williams gig, who cancelled it... At least we got the tickets refunded!!!!

Parents bought a house without getting a survey on it. House required full rewire, had major structural problems including but not limited to subsidence, damp, needed to be fully replastered, new everything. Not my purchase but had to hear about it for the past 18 months. House is uninhabitable still. Surveys don't pick up everything but I would always get one done because O M G

I've lost a specialist splint for bruxism that cost £400. I'm back using my old, standard one which leaves me with crushing headaches every day while I wait for another dental appointment. I've searched everywhere and can only think it fell into the bin.

Really angry with myself for not looking after it better.

Last week my (young adult) DS was getting some parts for his car that are stored in the roof of our garage and he slipped coming down the ladder Fortunately he wasn't badly hurt, but unfortunately this was largely because the bonnet of DH's beloved classic car broke his fall...

I did this too. 😊

Spent £20 getting a skirt hemmed .. it has pleats
but complicated list daughter entire games kit for school (over £250 to replace as it’s private school) then found it but child is autistic and now prefers the feel
of most of the new one so need to keep it :(
