I disagree that tipping has always been usual in the UK. Not in my lifetime experience of holidaying in the UK and Ireland, and socialising in bars and clubs. The only exceptions were barbers, hairdressers, and taxi drivers. It wasn't, and still isn't very much, widespread in Britain in my experience. That's why the US tipping culture is always a source of amusement and puzzlement here, because it's quite alien to us.

It has always been completely normal to order a drink and say ‘and whatever you’re having’ to the barmaid. They either have a drink or take £1 or so as a tip.

I said the same thing except for barstaff. You might get a barman or barmaid one for themselves during the course of the night if it's your local, but no way are they constantly tipped.

I hear you, I'm sick of it too, what is even classed as being charitable anymore? I feel like I'm a waking charity case myself with how prices are rising all the time.

The charity bags that get posted through your door, I use those as bin bags. Only a small amount of funds from those actually gets donated to the charity, the rest of it goes to the company itself. No thanks, I'd rather sell it on Vinted and make extra money for myself. Pfft, didn't mean to go off on a tangent! It makes me so angry.

Never add tip unless it's full service. Employee comes to the table and takes order. Serves product correctly and returns with a bill and card machine.

I was in Gran Canaria last October and didnt find it expensive...lots of bars selling pints of the local beer for 2 EUR and that was in Puerto Rico.

I don't drink that, though. I like Strongbow or Magners. We're just back in our apartment and in the last pub a Magner's and a vodka and coke was €16. That's a bit dearer than home.

I always thought a tip was a payment after the event for a good service. Seems now to be a payment for any kind of shite service you like up front.

Yes, but it was established well before a National Minimum Wage. I only earn a little over NMW and I do not ever get tips in my job for simply doing my job. So no, I won't be tipping anyone at all. They are paid for doing their job. The End.

Realistically is anyone going say "I'm not paying that. Pour the drinks down the sink."? Nope you pay and then moan.

Of course the sensible thing to do is to check the prices before you order. But isn't that a little sad on the beginning of a holiday? Also being human you may forget.

Op is rightly surprised drinks prices are 25% up from last time - the monetary value isn’t the point.
